The need for boron (B) fertilization of alfalfa has been known for many years. An annual application of 1.5 to 2.0 ·pounds of elemental B per acre on alfalfa has been the general recommendation of the University of Kentucky's, Department of Agronomy for at least 20 years. Most states surrounding Kentucky have similar recommendations; however, some indicate that B needs to be applied only once every two years. There has been very little recent research to verify the need for B on alfalfa.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This is the third and most comprehensive study of pesticide use on crops in Nebraska. The first was completed in 1978 and the second one in 1982. The first study indicated that approximately 25 million pounds (11.34 million kg) of active ingredients were used on the major crops in Nebraska. This increased to approximately 30.2 million pounds (13.7 million kg) in 1982. The USDA requires accurate information to meet their responsibilities. Thus, this survey was undertaken to determine: 1) the use of pesticides on crops, pasture and rangeland and 2) to identify pest management practices.

Alfalfa can be a vigorous and productive forage crop for Kentucky farmers. Like all farm crops, however, alfalfa is subject to infectious diseases that can limit forage production. Managing these diseases is an important part of economical alfalfa production.
Alfalfa diseases can cause reduced forage yield, reduced forage quality, and decreased stand persistence. Sometimes, the effects of infectious diseases can be dramatic, such as sudden stand loss in a fall-seeded crop caused by Sclerotinia crown and stem rot. Often, the effects of diseases on alfalfa are more subtle but no less important. For example, alfalfa plants with Phytophthora root rot …

This note shows comparable yields for 22 out of 100 alfalfa varieties which have been tested in at least three trials at Lexington or Princeton since 1971. Varieties not listed include many taken off the market, varieties known to be unsuited to Kentucky, or those which need further testing.
Yield results from seven separate trials are given in Table 1 as average annual dry matter yields (T/A) and as % relative yield (RY) as compared to Vernal. Vernal was used in each trial as a standard check and on the soils of limestone origin at Lexington and Princeton averaged over …

This note is a brief summary of results obtained in 1981 from one white clover, five alfalfa, and three red clover trials. Yields in the seeding year, and from the first full year of production thereafter, are not the best estimate of the full potential of most forage legumes. The third season stand and yield are a good measure of persistency with red clover and white clover. At times it may be the fourth or fifth season with alfalfa before stands begin to thin.

Three tests in southwestern Nebraska during 1971 and 1972 evaluated insecticides against the army cutworm. Adult alfalfa weevils did not damage new second growth alfalfa in a small plot study during a 3-year period (1973-1975) at Gothenburg, NE. However, excellent control of larval alfalfa weevils was obtained. These results indicated a need to establish economic threshold levels for the alfalfa weevil in Nebraska to prevent unnecessary use of insecticides. Four tests to control the alfalfa weevil with registered insecticides verified the efficacy of these materials under Nebraska conditions. The Western Pennyroyal area of Kentucky consists largely of deep, well-drained limestone-derived soils occurring on an undulating to rolling landscape. A thin loess mantle overlies the limestone residuum in many areas. Soils on these landscapes are capable of good crop production, providing the basis of the rather intensive grain-hay- tobacco-livestock farming systems common to the Pennyroyal area. Because of the well-suited physical characteristics of these soils, alfalfa is a very important hay crop to this area.

Performance Of Certified Seed Lots Of Dawson Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr, G. R. Manglitz

Breeder, foundation, and certified seed lots of Dawson alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., were tested to determine stability in performance during three generations of seed increase under certification. Two field experiments were conducted, a seeded forage yield test and a space-planted test. Greenhouse experiments included separate tests for resistance to pea aphids, spotted alfalfa aphids, and bacterial wilt. Results obtained on certified Dawson alfalfa seed classes in field and greenhouse experiments were in agreement with the original variety description.

The main purpose of this study was to obtain information on forage yield and quality of four alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties that differed in level of resistance to potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) yellowing, when cut at three stages of growth in the second and third cuttings in field plots, with and without insecticide application. The stages of growth were bud, 1/10, and full bloom. Molybdenum is recommended in Kentucky for legumes (soybeans, alfalfa, clovers and other forage legumes) beginning in 1969. The application should be made as a seed treatment and at the rate of 0.4 to 0.8 (4/10 to 8/10) ounces of molybdenum per acre. Molybdenum is recommended only on soils testing less than pH 6.2.

Many Kentucky farmers plan to sow alfalfa in early spring on a prepared seed bed. A main objective is to avoid or reduce most of the damage of alfalfa weevil on the first-year crops . Eptam 6 E sprayed on the prepared seed bed at rate of 2 quarts in 10 to 20 gallons of water per acre and disked in 3-4 inches deep right behind the sprayer usually gives good control of annual grass weeds and some control of broadleaf weeds as well. Chickweed and henbit weeds are bad in alfalfa this fall. DNBP (premerge or Sinox PE) sprayed on infested fields at rate of 1 to 3 qt in 20 to 40 gallons of water per acre may destroy the weeds without harm to the dormant alfalfa. Use the higher rate if chickweed is matted on the ground or if henbit is heavy in the stand. Spray only when the temperature is 55 to 60 degrees or warmer and fair weather is predicted for 12 hours after treatment. The 1-qt rate applied in early fall when chickweed is very small (not until …

This bulletin reports stands, forage yields, and other agronomic data on alfalfas of diverse origin or type tested under five management systems at Lincoln, Nebraska. Narrow-crowned and broad-crowned types were tested. The management systems involved non-irrigated alfalfa-bromegrass tests (a) continuously grazed with steers, (b) cut for hay, and (c) rotationally grazed with sheep; an irrigated alfalfa-bromegrass test rotationally grazed with dairy cattle; and irrigated tests of alfalfas in pure stands cut for hay.

The destructive nature of the clover seed chalcid has been known since the latter part of the 19th century. This jet-black Hymenoptera, often called the "chalcis-fly," destroys from 10 to 20 percent of the alfalfa seed in Utah each year. Damage as high as 85 percent has been reported.

The task of obtaining and selecting plants which may not only survive under salty conditions, but grow and produce satisfactory yields is varied and complex. It is becoming necessary to select and breed crops for salt tolerance. Plants can be grown in artificially constructed salt basins to test their individual salt tolerance, but this takes time, at least one year. It would be desirable to develop a rapid test to determine the salt tolerance of a given plant. Ranger alfalfa was developed through the cooperative efforts of personnel of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and released for seed increase in 1940. It is a winter-hardy, bacterial wilt resistant variety synthesized from five basic strains selected from Cossack, Turkistan and Ladak. Breeding methods used in the development of this variety were described in detail. Research results obtained on the performance of the basic strains and on the seed lots, produced under certification procedures, in controlled wilt and cold tests and forage yield trials under field conditions at the Nebraska station were presented …

Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) is a parasitic weed which attacks alfalfa, clovers, lespedeza, and many other species of plants. This pest is especially troublesome when these crops are grown to produce seed.
Control of dodder should increase the financial income of a seed producer in several ways. First, control should make it possible for a producer to raise seed of high quality which will command a better price; second, it should enable the producer to increase yields; and last, it should eliminate much of the cost of harvesting and cleaning his product.
