Tillage type/timing and herbicide application date may change the amount and timing of N mineralization, altering fertilizer N needs for first-year corn (Zea mays L.) following glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine]-resistant (GR) alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Studies were conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Utah. Yield, quality, and economic return of silage corn as affected by five tillage type/timings (fall conventional till, spring conventional till, fall strip-till, spring strip-till, and no-till), three herbicide application dates for alfalfa termination (fall, spring, and in-crop), and four N rates (0, 56, 112, and 224 kg ha−1) were evaluated. Silage corn yield and quality following …

Carinata (Brassica carinata A. Braun), a non-food oilseed and an alternative biofuel feedstock, has received attention for its potential as a low-input option for production in the semi-arid regions of the Northern Great Plains (NGP). This study was conducted to (a) determine the economic optimum N and S fertilization rates and (b) determine the interactive effects of N and S fertilization on seed yield and agronomic traits in carinata. The field experiment conducted in 2017 and 2018 at Brookings, SD, had four N rates (56, 84, 112, and 140 kg N ha−1) and three S rates (0, …

Wayne E. Sabbe Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 2020, Nathan A. Slaton
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Rapid technological changes in crop management and production require that the research efforts be presented in an expeditious manner. The contributions of soil fertility and fertilizers are major production factors in all Arkansas crops. The studies described within will allow producers to compare their practices with the university’s research efforts. Additionally, soil-test data and fertilizer sales are presented to allow comparisons among years, crops, and other areas within Arkansas.

Mosaic Agriculture: A Guide To Irrigated Crop And Forage Production In Northern Wa, Geoff A. Moore Mr, Clinton K. Revell Dr, Christopher Schelfhout Dr, Christopher Ham Mr, Samuel Crouch Mr, Meredith M. Guthrie
Bulletins 4000 -
The Bulletin is a comprehensive guide for pastoralists, agronomists, agribusiness and the broader community on the growing of irrigated crops and pastures within a rangeland pastoral setting.
Dispersed irrigation developments on stations throughout the northern rangelands (sometimes referred to as mosaic agriculture) has created opportunities for the introduction of more productive forage species and pastoralists can now grow high quality forage for 12 months of the year. This can help to overcome the key constraint of traditional pastoral systems, the low quality of the feed over the dry season that typically results in stock losing condition.
Cultivating Hops For Cone Production In Nebraska, Stacy A. Adams
Cultivating Hops For Cone Production In Nebraska, Stacy A. Adams
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The hop cone is the primary product of agronomic value when growing Humulus lupulus L. (common hop). Cones are modified stem and leaf structures that protect the female flower cluster that forms chemical compounds important for flavoring beer and other uses. The majority of hops in the United States (~96%) is grown in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Hops can be grown in very diverse climates, but it is the climatic consistency of the Pacific NW that provides product consistency and reasoning commercial hops production is prevalent in the region. Hops is a niche crop outside of the …

Leaf Nitrogen Sufficiency Level Guidelines For Midseason Fertilization In Corn, Caio Luiz Dos Santos, Trenton L. Roberts, Larry C. Purcell
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Improving N management guidelines in corn (Zea mays L.) production systems can reduce fertilization costs and potential negative environmental impacts. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of leaf nitrogen (LN) concentration as a tool to improve midseason N management in corn production. The experiment was conducted on 8 site-years with furrow irrigation. There were 11 N fertilization regimes with season total N rates ranging from 0 to 257 kg N ha−1. Split-applications were made at pre-plant, the 10th collared leaf stage (V10), the 12th collared leaf stage (V12), and tasseling (VT). The uppermost fully collared …

Little is known about the effects of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] management practices on the success of the subsequent rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop. A study was initiated to determine how rice was affected by the preceding soybean crop's maturity group (MG) and planting date when grown in rotation on silt loam and clay soils. Optimum and late soybean planting dates and MGs (3.5, 4.7, 5.4, and 5.6) were followed by a rice crop. The results differed by soil texture, with the planting date and MG selection of the previous soybean crop more influential to the rice …

Weeds represent an increasing challenge for crop systems since they have evolved adaptability to adverse environmental conditions, such as salinity stress. Herbicide effectiveness can be altered by the quality of water in which the weed is growing. This research aimed to study the combined effect of salt stress and recurrent selection with a sublethal dose of imidazolinone herbicides in the shifting of the sensitivity of Echinochloa colona (L.) Link (junglerice) to imidazolinone herbicides. This study was divided into two experiments; in experiment I, three recurrent selection cycles were conducted in Pelotas/RS/Brazil with imazapic + imazapyr at 0.125× the field rate; …

Herbicides are major tools for effective weed management. The evolution of resistance to herbicides in weedy species, especially contributed by non-target-site-based resistance (NTSR) is a worrisome issue in crop production globally. Glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is one of the extremely difficult weeds in southern US crop production. In this study, we present the level and molecular basis of resistance to the chloroacetamide herbicide, S-metolachlor, in six field-evolved A. palmeri populations that had survivors at the recommended field-dose (1.1 kg ai ha−1). These samples were collected in 2014 and 2015. The level of resistance was …

Understanding the impacts of long-term agricultural practices on soil quality (SQ) is key for sustaining agroecosystem productivity. This study investigated conventional and no-tillage (NT), residue burning and no burning, residue level (high and low), and irrigation (irrigated and dryland) effects on soil properties, SQ, and crop yields following 16 yr of a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] double-crop system via the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF). A field experiment was conducted in the Lower Mississippi River Delta region on a silt-loam soil. Bulk density, soil organic C (SOC), total N (TN), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), …
