Weed control is economically important for production of rice, a major crop in Arkansas. These findings summarize efforts of the team of Arkansas scientists working on weed control strategies for rice during 1997. Various technologies were evaluated in field studies at five locations involving the major weed problems and rice production systems used in the state. Results from these studies will add to the arsenal of weed control options for producers. Highlights include synergists and safeners for herbicides to aid in control of propanil-resistant barnyardgrass; herbicides and flooding techniques for control of red rice and other weeds; and the use …

Rapid technological changes in crop management and production require that the research efforts also be presented in an expeditious manner. The contributions of soil fertility and fertilizers are major production factors in all Arkansas crops. The studies contained within will allow producers to compare their practices with the university’s research efforts. Additionally, soil test data and fertilizer sales are presented to allow comparisons among years, crops, and other areas within Arkansas.

Two hundred ninety farm operators in the three easternmost crop reporting districts in Arkansas responded to a mail survey in November 1996 about their preferences and satisfaction with retail pesticide suppliers.Results show most farmers are quite satisfied with their main retail pesticide supplier, although 55.5% of the farm operators used more than one retail pesticide supplier in 1996. Users of multiple suppliers were less satisfied with their suppliers than those using only one supplier. Availability of certain pesticides was the most frequently mentioned reason for using multiple suppliers. Several attributes were important in selecting the main supplier with reputation being …

Growers generally use herbicides to efficiently produce high-quality fruit and vegetables for processing or fresh market sales. Due to the smaller acreage of these crops compared to major field crops, fewer herbicides are registered for use in fruit and vegetable crops than for field crops. Each year, new herbicides are evaluated under Arkansas growing conditions with the objective of improving the herbicide technology for the grower, processor, and ultimately the consumer. For several decades, farmers have experienced a common stand-establishment disease syndrome when spring-seeded alfalfa was followed by extended periods of wet weather. Seedlings affected by this syndrome exhibit severe stunting as well as yellowing and reddening of seed leaves (cotyledons), but they do not wilt or collapse, as they might from a damping-off disease. Commonly, the problem affects most or all of the field.
Based on research that began in the 1980's, we suspected that a fungus called Aphanomyces euteiches (hereafter simply called Aphanomyces) was responsible. This root-rot fungus can be found in the majority of alfalfa fields we …

A greenhouse study was conducted in a hydroponic system to determine the nitrogen (N) utilization efficiency (NUE) of 14 creeping bentgrass cultivars. There were significant differences among cultivars in plant tissue dry weight, tissue N content, root absorption efficiency (RAE), and NUE. Considering all plant tissue (whole plant), 'Penncross' accumulated the highest N accompanied with the highest whole plant dry weight (WPDW), while 'Allure' accumulated the lowest total Nand WPDW than all the other cultivars. The proportion of WPDW and total N partitioned to shoots was higher than partitioned to roots in each cultivar. On a whole plant basis, 'Regent' …

N utilization, including plant dry weight (DW) production, total N and nitrate N (NO3-N) content accumulation, N utilization efficiency (NUE), root absorption efficiency (RAE), reduced N accumulation, and nitrate assimilation capacity (NAC) were determined for creeping bentgrass cultivars grown in hydroponic culture. Possible mechanisms affecting N utilization including nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and root morphology were also examined. Four cultivars, selected from an initial screening of creeping bentgrasses were grown under both low and high levels of N in a flowing solution culture system. Nitrification inhibitors and urease inhibitors have been commercially available to farmers for several years. Nitrification inhibitors are intended to minimize losses of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) from soil due to leaching and denitrification, by slowing the activity of soil bacteria which convert ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) to the more easily lost NO3-N. This has the potential to make NH4-N or urea fertilizer sources of N more effective, particularly during late spring and early summer when soil and climatic conditions are usually more favorable for leaching or denitrification of NO3-N.
