Evaluation Of Annual And Short Term Rotation Ryegrasses., Tony Albertsen Jan 1990

Evaluation Of Annual And Short Term Rotation Ryegrasses., Tony Albertsen

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The increasing range of annual and short term rotation ryegrasses have been evaluated in the high rainfall regions of the South West since 1986. To date promising later maturing cultivars such as Concord (in particular), Progrow, Aristocrat have consistently outyielded the standard early maturing cultivar Wimmera during the early winter period and in spring. These later maturing varieties have the potential to more fully utilise the whole of the growing season and to be conserved as hay during drier spring weather, whilst still retaining digestibility, protein and metabolisable energy. Viable seed production for self regeneration from later cut hay pastures …

Seed Phosphorus : Its Effect On Plant Production, Mike Bolland, Mike Riley, Brett Thomson, Blakely Paynter, Mike Baker Jan 1990

Seed Phosphorus : Its Effect On Plant Production, Mike Bolland, Mike Riley, Brett Thomson, Blakely Paynter, Mike Baker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The amount of phosphorus in the seed of annual crop and pasture species influences production of plants grown from that seed. It appears the more phosphorus there is in the seed, the better the potential yield irrespective of whether fertilizer phosphorus is applied to the soil or not. This article discusses the influence of phosphorus concentration in the seed of annual crop and pasture species on subsequent production. It also explains the difference between phosphorus concentration and phosphorus content in the seed

Role Of Assimilate Partition And Biomass Productivity In Wheat Yield Improvement., K. H.M. Siddique Jan 1990

Role Of Assimilate Partition And Biomass Productivity In Wheat Yield Improvement., K. H.M. Siddique

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 90WH75

A. Ear:stem ratios in parental genotypes.

Earlier studies have established the importance of ear:stem ratio in determining the harvest index and potential yield of wheat cultivars (Siddique et al. 1989; Siddique and Whan, 1990). Much of the earlier work was concentrated mainly on recommended high yielding cultivars and some old cultivars. It is important to evaluate a wide range of parental materials for ear:stem ratios, before embarking on a breeding programme on ear:stem ratios. The main aim of this study was to assess ear:stem ratios in a wide range of parental genotypes.

B. Evaluation of breeding populations for …

Plant Growth And Survival In Saline, Waterlogged Soils, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Neil Davidson, Richard Galloway Jan 1990

Plant Growth And Survival In Saline, Waterlogged Soils, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Neil Davidson, Richard Galloway

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Waterlogged soils in Western Australia are often salt-affected. Recent research has shown that the interaction between waterlogging and salinity has a far greater adverse effect on plant groivth and survival than either of these two factors individually. The consequences of the combined effects of salt and waterlogging for most plant species are increased salt uptake, reduced growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), defoliation, and death. Salt sensitive agricultural species (nonhalophytes) are more severely affected by this interaction than salt tolerant species (halophytes).

Waterlogging : How It Reduces Plant Growth And How Plants Can Overcome Its Effects, Tim Setter, Bob Belford Jan 1990

Waterlogging : How It Reduces Plant Growth And How Plants Can Overcome Its Effects, Tim Setter, Bob Belford

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Lack of oxygen is the major cause of limited plant growth in waterlogged soils. When soils become waterlogged less gas diffuses to and from the roots through the soil pores; there are changes in concentrations of mineral elements in soil solutions; and toxic products of roots and soil microorganisms begin to accumulate. These changes adversely affect germination, growth and development of plants.

The Segregation Of Wheat For Noodles, Graham Crosbie Jan 1990

The Segregation Of Wheat For Noodles, Graham Crosbie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Western Australian segregation of wheat of selected varieties to cater for the requirements of the established Japanese noodle wheat market and an emerging market for this type of wheat in South Korea started in the 1989-90 season. In this article, Graham Crosbie, who pressed strongly for this segregation, explains the background behind its introduction and the need to ensure its success.

Wheat Quality For The Japanese Flour Milling And Noodle Industries, Graham Crosbie, Dianne Miskelly, Tim Dewan Jan 1990

Wheat Quality For The Japanese Flour Milling And Noodle Industries, Graham Crosbie, Dianne Miskelly, Tim Dewan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

About one-third of Australia's wheat production is used in the manufacture of Asian noodles. Japan is one of our most important noodle wheat markets. In that country much of the 900,000 to 1,000,000 tonnes of Australian wheat bought each year is used for noodle production. About 70 per cent of this wheat is Australian Standard White (ASW)from Western Australia. ASWis highly regarded for its suitability for the production of white, Japanese-style noodles. The remainder comprises mainly Australian Prime Hard (APH) which is valued for the production of yellow, Chinese-style noodles and for various breads. This article discusses quality aspects associated …

Does Chemical Leaf Burn Of Double Crop Soybeans Reduce Yield?, Larry J. Grabau, Todd W. Pfeiffer, S. Nevins Jan 1990

Does Chemical Leaf Burn Of Double Crop Soybeans Reduce Yield?, Larry J. Grabau, Todd W. Pfeiffer, S. Nevins

Agronomy Notes

Most farmers who have applied acifluorfen (sold as Blazer or Tackle) for postemergence control of broadleaf weeds in soybean fields are aware that leaf crinkling, bronzing, and necrosis can result. Despite this, studies in Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, and South Carolina have shown that full season soybeans have plenty of time to recover from leaf burn caused by this herbicide, and no yield losses have been found. However, double crop soybeans are usually planted much later than the full season crop. This delay in planting may reduce the time for plants to complete vegetative growth before beginning the seed production process. …

Automated Sorting Of Oriented Tobacco Leaves, Larry G. Wells, M. J. Bader Jan 1990

Automated Sorting Of Oriented Tobacco Leaves, Larry G. Wells, M. J. Bader

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A mechanism has been developed which removes cured burley tobacco leaves from plants so that midribs are oriented parallel. A photosensor was utilized to count leaves as they were removed and a microprocessor determined the number of leaves allocated to each of three grades. Experiments indicated that 84% of leaves removed could be correctly sorted with a 2.4% material loss at an effective rate of approximately 2.4 times that of conventional methods.
