In this site we would expect a very large response (40 to 50% ) to phosphorus.
History:
The site was chosen because of the patchy and poor pasture production. The poor areas tend to have more suckling clover than the good areas. The pasture was legume dominant.
Treatments were applied on April 16, 1989.

Based on a 1.5 t/ha potential yield, the strategic treatment was planned to be 120 kg urea/ha 4WAS. However, the crop was poorly established and so NH4NO3 was used in the hope of getting better tillering than would be possible with the slower release urea source. Gambling on equal dollars to urea for 2/3 N, but believe that twice as effective.
DAP was used to place nitrogen with the seed in case there was no rain of significance after seeding. This nitrogen (only 5 kg/ha) was probably lost with the rains of 20-28/7/89 (50 mm). Urea …

The very low seed yields are a reflection of the dry winter conditions experienced in 1989. The Rose (T. hirtum) and Cupped (T. cherli) clovers appear to be a more promising option for this difficult soil type compared to other species. Paros yellow serradella performed well considering the trial site is located in a very dry area. The burr medics would not be an option on these acidic soil types because of nodulation failure; which should become evident in the regenerating swards.

Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.
Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …

Current recommendations for pasture species in the medium rainfall zone has not included species mixtures for paddocks with varying soil types. These trials (three in total) are designed to test the hypothesis that legume species mixtures are more productive and persistent in the long term than monocultures, across three soil types and three different cropping/pasture rotations (continuous pasture, 1 year pasture : 1 year crop rotation, 2 years pasture : 1 year crop rotation).

Reproduction Of Lindera Melissafolia In Arkansas, Robert D. Wright
Reproduction Of Lindera Melissafolia In Arkansas, Robert D. Wright
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Field reproduction was investigated in several populations of the endangered dioecious species Lindera melissifolia. Fruit set was light and erratic, and even where fruiting was heavy no effective seed bank was found. Field transplantation of greenhouse-grown seedlings was successful for one growing season. Rhizome sprouting was widespread, and produced rapid recovery from fire. Without enhancement of natural reproduction, the species will probably decline.
The Effect On Farm Profit Of Conserving Stubble To Prevent Wind Erosion, A D. Bathgate
The Effect On Farm Profit Of Conserving Stubble To Prevent Wind Erosion, A D. Bathgate
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Over-grazing of stubbles is a major cause of winf erosion on WesternAustralian farms. Stubble contributes to the 'roughness' of the paddock; as the roughness is reduced, the risk of winf erosion is increased.
The risk of lupinosis in sheep has previously reduced the likelihood of lupin stubble being over grazed, but the development of Gungurru, a phomopsis-resistent variety of lupin, has increased the potential for over-grazing and hence the probability of wind erosion.
This article describes the economic benefit (or cost) of conserving stubble at the conservation standards.
Early Sowing : One Key To Improved Yields Of Cereal Crops, M W. Perry, Wal Anderson, Rob Delane
Early Sowing : One Key To Improved Yields Of Cereal Crops, M W. Perry, Wal Anderson, Rob Delane
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Early sowing of cereal crops is one of the most important management practices through which Western Australian cereal growers can increase yields.
Researchers have long known that in theory early sowing should mean improved growth and water use efficiency - which both contribuite to increased yields. Application of this knowledge has had to await new tillage and herbicide technology, but recent research in the northan and central wheatbelt has now demonstrated the advantages of early sowing in practice. And more exciting yet, there is evidence that yield responses to weed control and applied fertilizers may also be greater in early …
Irrigation And Fertilizer Management For Horticultural Crops On The Swan Coastal Plain, I R. Mcpharlin, Greg Luke
Irrigation And Fertilizer Management For Horticultural Crops On The Swan Coastal Plain, I R. Mcpharlin, Greg Luke
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Swan Coastal Plain is an important area for the production of vegetables, flowers and fruits in Western Australia. The yellow Cottesloe, Karrakatta and the white-grey Bassendean Sands upon which most of this production is based are infertile in their natural state and require large inputs of fertilizer for succesful production of horticultural crops.
Improved irrigation and fertilizer management will be needed to reduce nutrient leaching from horticultural crops on the coastal plain. This will probably involve applying fertilizer and water more frequently, but in smaller quantaties thaan currently practiced. The result should more closely match water and fertilizer supply …
Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein
Trees In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, C S. Peek, Richard Silberstein
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The peel-Harvey catchment has been the focus for an intensive research and extension programme to reduce phosphorous run-off flowing into the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, while maintaining agricultural productivity.
One of the proposed management strategies is to plant large areas of trees on the catchment's leaching sands. Farmers would be encouraged to take this option if growing trees was at least equal, in financial return, to the present agricultural land uses.
Preliminary data indicate that growing Eucalyptus globulas (Tasmanian bluegum) for woodchipping may be at least as profitable as agriculture. Tree plantations also have the added potential to reduce …

Allelopathic Observations In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) To Ducksalad (Heteranthera Limosa), R. H. Dilday, Paolo Nastasi, Roy J. Smith Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
More than 50 weed species infest drill-seeded rice in the U.S. and one of the most prevalent aquatic weeks is ducksalad (Heteranthera limosa). During the summer of 1988, a field experiment was conducted to identify rice accessions from the USDA/ARS rice germplasm collection for allelopathic effects to ducksalad. In this field experiment, 5,000 accessions were evaluated for allelopathic activity. Five to seven seeds of each rice accession were planted in hills about 75cm apart in two replications. Allelopathic activity was recorded as 1) radius of the area affected by allelochemical from the base of the rice plant and 2) percentage …

In Vitro Culture Of Several Rice Cultivars, A. F. Mirlohi, Lyell F. Thompson, R. H. Dilday, Feng H. Huang, Jameel M. Al-Khayri
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Tissue culture methods have been established to regenerate certain rice (Oryza sativa L) cultivars, but regeneration of the rice cultivars widely grown in Arkansas has not been reported. This study has established an in vitroculture for the rice cultivars 'Nortai', 'Starbonnet', 'Mars', Tebonnet', 'Newbonnet', and 'Lemont'. Callus was induced in the dark at either 20 or 28 C from dehusked seeds cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) containing 40 g L^-1 sucrose, 10 g L^1 agar, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mg L^-1 1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and adjusted to pH 5.7.
