Please find enclosed a summary of results obtained from a range of field trials. These include a study of some techniques to replace undesirable cultivars of subterranean clover; the competitive ability of some subterranean clovers; the evaluation of the sub clover cultivars, Dinninup 3, Midland B,some members of subspeciesYanninicum, the medic cultivars Cyfield and Tornafield; and the preliminary results from an exotic pasture species introduction trial at Shark Bay. In most cases complete results have been or will be circulated in report form.

During 1970 interest in the small ungrazed Legume Species Trials was reduced to ten trials located in the more troublesome areas. Five of the trials are on the sandy soils of the Midland Plain three trials are in Merredin-Southern·cross region, one is on deep sand at Tincurrin and the other is at Pindar. All thesites are sandy soils on which the sub clover strains appear to perform the best. The newer trials are investigating the value of sub clover cultivars such as Northam A,Mt Helena A, Shenton Park A, and Daglish. These trials will be the subject of a special …

SUBTERRANEAN CLOVER INOCULATION EXPERIMENTS Badgingarra and Newdegate Comparisons between Rhizobium trifolii strain WU290 and possible replacement strains were continued. The work was conducted for the following reasons 1. The need for information on "back-up" strains particularly since the inoculant manufacturers had experienced difficulty in producing high-count peat cultures of WU290. 2. Strain CC2480a had proved very satisfactory in the Eastern States. Although it did not show up to advantage under our conditions in 1968,further testing was indicated. 3. The need for information on inoculation needs on old land.

Medium Rainfall Zone Trials Eleven replications of the basic rate of P, rate of SO4-S and S experiments were maintained during 1970 in the 20in - 30 in. rainfall zone. Soil types examined were the very gravelly soils (5 reps, 4 sites), sands or loamy sands over gravel or clay (3 sites) and sandplain soils (3 reps, 2 sites). In all cases except one, fertiliser history was not reliable, but in every case well over one ton of super had been applied. over a period of over 15 years.

Anhydrous ammonia, as the name infers, is pure ammonia, It is kept in a liquid form under pressure and must therefore be stored in special vessels. When pressure is released it changes to gaseous form. Anhydrous ammonia is the most concentrated form of nitrogen fertiliser available. It has 82% nitrogen compared to 46% for urea, the most concentrated solid form of nitrogen fertilisers.

BACKGROUND: During 1967 there were a number of reports of poor establishment of Weiko and Uniwhite lupins. Because of the possibility of either delayed nodulation or insufficient nitrogen fixation being involved, an experiment was conducted during 1968 to examine a range of lupin rhizobia isolates in the field (a summary of this experiment was circulated during 1969). In this experiment two strains, WU425 and WU43, showed sufficient promise to warrant additional testing in 1969.

Ammonium nitrate is a source of nitrogen containing half
its nitrogen in the ammonium form and half in the nitrate form.
Some properties are set out in comparison with urea in the
following table.
Ammonium nitrate has an advantage over urea in that it can
be topdressed onto the surface of the soil and left uncovered
without a danger of loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere. When urea
is left uncovered on the surface of the soil losses of nitrogen occur
through volatilisation of ammonia during the hydrolysis of the urea.

No meaningful conclusions can be drawn until the multiple regression analysis comparing soil and plant parameters with level of response has been completed. Similarly it is extremely dangerious to extrapolate results obtained from any one experiement in a particular district to the general farm situation. In addition these results represent only 1 rather atypical season and so need to be verified by additional calibration trials. in 1973 (40) and 1974 (20).

The Mexican semi-dwarf wheat varieties have performed very well under high fertility conditions overseas. There is considerable evidence that they have greater potential for yield than the Australia spring varieties because of greater number of flowers set per spikelet. In this trial Falcon and Pitic were grown under almost optimal conditions for dryland wheat growing in Western Australia. The trial was planted early (21st May) into a completely weed free seedbed. Nutrition was near optimal. Seasonal conditions were near perfect. Grain yields were extremely high for Western Australia. The current recommendations for time of application of soild nitrogen fertilisers such as urea, ammonium nitrate and sulphate of ammonia are:
Zone A: These fertilisers should be applied as close to seeding as possible.
Zone B: As for zone A except on very sandy soils which are very prone to leaching, where application can be delayed 2-3 weeks.
Zone C: Applications should be delayed about 3 weeks after seeding.

Apart from the normal factors affecting response of cereals to nitrogen fertilizers, i.e. length of growing season, rainfall, soil type etc, there are other factors which affect the response after a legume pasture. these factors include length of the previous legume phase and how good was the stand of legumes. Unfortunately for most of the trials in the past, involving the use of nitrogen on first crops after legumes, this information is not available.
