Bulletin 3990 - The Narrow-Leafed Lupin In Western Australia, J. S. Gladstones
Bulletin 3990 - The Narrow-Leafed Lupin In Western Australia, J. S. Gladstones
Bulletins - 3000 - 3999
Lupins are new as a commercial crop, but may be very old as a food plant. Types of the Mediterranean white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) have been part-developed and used as a subsistence crop for 3 000 years or more. Likewise the pearl lupin (L. mutabilis Sweet) has been grown for many centuries in the Andean Highlands of South America. In both cases the seeds are boiled and steeped in water for several days to rid them of their bitter, somewhat toxic alkaloids. They are then used directly as a valued protein source in human diets.

Bulletin No 4007 - Grasses In South Western Australia, J G. Paterson
Bulletins 4000 -
IThe grasses comprise one of the world's largest families of flowering plants, with over 500 groups or genera containing well over 5000 individual types or species distributed throughout the world. About 125 groups have been recorded in Western Australia but it is probable that the list is far from complete. About one third of these have ° been introduced from overseas.
The purpose of this bulletin is to describe those grasses which are more commonly found in the south-west of Western Australia. Also, as many people are interested in knowing the name and nature of a grass when they find …
Polythene Storage Improves Lupin Seed Germination, G H. Walton
Polythene Storage Improves Lupin Seed Germination, G H. Walton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Seed storage trials indicate a practical means of maintaining sandplain lupin seed at a moisture content that limits hard seed development, leading to a commercially acceptable germination rate in the following season.

Lupin Trials, J Moore
Lupin Trials, J Moore
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trials in lupins this year concentrated on testing herbicide for post emergence use in lupins. Of the 20 herbicides tested 12 did not cause significant decreases in crop density and/or yield. However, weed control was often poor and the herbicide phytotoxicity tended to vary between sites. (Chapman, Badgingarra and Avondale). The Chapman and Avondale trials were not harvested because of drought. Trials in 1978 should determine if any of the herbicides tested can safely be recommended. Lupins - summary. A New Approach To Grain Insect Control, G D. Rimes, M. T. Sexton
A New Approach To Grain Insect Control, G D. Rimes, M. T. Sexton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australian farmers now have a legal responsibility to control stored grain insects on their farms.
Ten species of insects, usually referred to collectively as 'weevils', have been 'declared' under the Agriculture and Related Resources Act.
In Western Australia, grain storage insects are not found in standing cereal crops. Thus, it should be possible to set up a clean delivery "pipeline" from the paddock to the C.B.H. bin.

W.A. Alert For Aphid On Lucerne, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The spotted alfalfa aphid which is devastating lucerne crops in the Eastern States, could be introduced to Western Australia on lucerne hay which is fed en route to imported livestock. The Department of Agriculture has therefore alerted all inspection points about the possible danger.
The Department of Agricultureis maintaining traps specifically for the aphid, and has found no evidence of it yet.
Cereal Foliage Disease Survey, T N. Khan, A. G. P. Brown
Cereal Foliage Disease Survey, T N. Khan, A. G. P. Brown
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Cereal Foliage Disease Survey A dry season reduced disease to insignificant levels (as measured by this survey) in all areas except the south west. Late rains may have produced some damage to wheat by S. nodorum however but this was probably confined to southern areas. In barley net blotch which has been declining re appeared a major disease in 1977 excepting high rainfall areas, where scald continued to be severe. The level of scald infection was considerably lower which may be associated with relatively higher temperatures and low rainfall. Variety Clipper continued to show high degree of tolerance to net …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Minimum tillage trials 1977. Locations: Wongan Hills R.S., Avondale, Merredin, Mt. Barker, Esperance. Sites: At each station two sites were used, the first was under crop in 1976 and the trial will be repeated each year on the same area. The second site was under pasture in 1976 and was due to be cropped in 1977 as part of the normal district practice. The trials will be planted on a similar pasture site in 1978. Results. Apart from crop yields, weed counts (before spraying) and crop plant numbers were taken. Other measurements were made by various research officers and reported …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Locality: Avondale, Wongan Hills and Chapman Research Stations. Background. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Each site was sprayed for doublegee control in the growing season before the first samples were taken in late summer of 73/74. The sites were again sprayed in the 1974 growing season except for Wongan Hills. Phosphorus Fertilisers For W.A. Farming, Michael D A Bolland
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Phosphorus is one of the major nutrients essential to plants. Eithout the use of phosphorus fertilisers, few soils in Western Australian sagricultural areas would be agriculturaly productive.
Superphosphate has been the major source of phosphorus fertiliser used in W. A..
Now there is a possibility that the alternatives to superphosphate may be cheaper

The Effect of Septoria nodorum on Yield of 125 Wheat Cultivars. The aim of this experiment was as described for that of 1976. There were some modifications to the treatments which were as follows: (a) Most of the cultivars were 'new' and (b) Three levels of Septoria attack were set up:- 1. Low: cover sprayed throughout the season with the fungicide Difolatan. 2. Moderate: inoculated with Septoria three times, followed at heading out by cover spraying with Difolatan. 3. Severe: inoculated four times no fungicide. The 125 entries were sown as hill plots with the three Septoria environments as main …
