The key to cultural control of weeds in cereal crops is an understanding of the factors which govern germination of the weed seeds.
Covering the seed with soil keeps out light, provides a stable moisture supply and makes germination faster than if the seed is left on the soil surface.
Shallow cultivation at the start of the growing season provides the soil cover needed for fast, even germination of weed seeds.

Results from trials comparing the growth and persistence of a number of annual pasture legumes in 1973 are presented in this report. Rainfall conditions during the year are described briefly and a table of annual and growing season rainfall at relevant centres is appended. Of the four time of planting trials two definitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 …

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …

Cruciferous weeds are common throughout the agricultural areas of Western Australia. They include wild turnip, wild mustard, wild radish, charlock and raphistrum weed or short fruited turnip.
Another one—tentatively named smooth-stemmed turnip—has recently been sighted. Its exact weed potential will not be known for some years, but it is likely to spread through the south coastal districts where the climate and sandy surfaced soils favour its growth.

The annual ryegrasses are valuable pasture plants in Western Australia, yet have become one of the major weed problems in cereal crops.
The key to cultural control of annual ryegrasses in cereal crops is an understanding of the factors which govern germination of the seed.
Covering the seed with soil keeps out light and provides a more stable moisture supply, bringing about a faster rate of germination. This is the basis of control programmes recommended in this article.
Recommendations for chemical control are also included.

BEFORE spending money on chemical weed control in crops, a farmer needs to know how profitable the operation will be. He may also be influenced by other things such as the need for weed-free seed, but the most important consideration should be an increased cash return.
If a herbicide is used to control weeds in a crop, the extra yield achieved must be worth more than the cost of the herbicide and its application for the treatment to be profitable.
This article gives guidelines to help farmers estimate the likely profitability of herbicide treatments for quota and non-quota crops.

Like all crops linseed and rapeseed can suffer from weed competition.
Linseed is highly susceptible to weed competition, while rape is susceptible to the chemicals used to kill broad-leaved weeds, so both crops pose special problems.
As in other broad-acre crops, cultural methods usually provide the best means of weed control.

THE "Spray Seed"* technique has many advantages over conventional cultivation methods of weed control. Some of these are matters of convenience, preference or opinion, and these cannot be measured in general economic terms.

"1970· Progress Eight of the 5 unreplicated trials were cropped without fertiliser. Seven were harvested (severe weed infestation ruined 66KA 7). Three trials left under pasture responded to the fertiliser treatments and were cut for dry matter production. The remaining four trials left under pasture grew badly, became weed dominant and were not rated for growth differences between treatments or cut for dry matter production. The replicated trials at Avondale and Newdegate were also cropped, without fertiliser.
