The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines
The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Three liming experiments were established to confirm previous estimates of the critical soil acidity level for barley. Two experiments studying the effect of depth of incorporation on the effectiveness of lime, established in 1986, were continued in 1987.
The results from the three liming experiments established this year supported the conclusion that barley is affected by soil acidity at pH's around 4.2 and 4.3 (CaC12) and that depth of this acid layer is important.
Significant lime responses were obtained at the Katanning depth of lime incorporation site but conclusions can not be made because of possible mixing of …

Trial 87WH51
Location: Wongan Hills Research Station.
This trial was put onto a site adjacent to Mel Mason's source of nitrogen trial and the CSIRO, 15 N plots to provide some explanation of the results from the limited treatments in those trials. They were designed to monitor soil/fertiliser nitrogen transformations with time. Unfortunately the site of this trial was variable. The end most similar to the other trials was deeper and sandier and stored less water than the other and where crop growth was far better.

Abatement Of Nitrate Pollution In Groundwater And Surface Runoff From Cropland Using Legume Cover Crops With No-Till Corn, M. Scott Smith, Jac J. Varco
KWRRI Research Reports
Agricultural practices can have a significant impact on water quality. The effects of leguminous winter cover crops on leaching of NO-3; from soil have been investigated in this project. Legume cover crops, by fixation of atmospheric N, can reduce the amount of fertilizer N required to produce summer grain crops. The methods initially used to evaluate cover crop effects on No; transport included suction probe lysimeters and measurement of NO-3; in soil samples collected to a depth of 90 cm. These measurements demonstrated extreme spatial variability in NO-3; distribution and water …
