Wheat (Triticum Aestivum) Nam Proteins Regulate The Translocation Of Iron, Zinc, And Nitrogen Compounds From Vegetative Tissues To Grain, Brian M. Waters, Cristobal Uauy, Jorge Dubcovsky, Michael A. Grusak
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The NAM-B1 gene is a NAC transcription factor that affects grain nutrient concentrations in wheat (Triticum aestivum). An RNAi line with reduced expression of NAM genes has lower grain protein, iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) concentrations. To determine whether decreased remobilization, lower plant uptake, or decreased partitioning to grain are responsible for this phenotype, mineral dynamics were quantified in wheat tissues throughout grain development. Control and RNAi wheat were grown in potting mix and hydroponics. Mineral (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, and Zn) and nitrogen (N) contents of organs were determined at regular intervals to …
Evaluating Hazelnut Cultivars For Yield, Quality And Disease Resistance, Sam Tobin
Evaluating Hazelnut Cultivars For Yield, Quality And Disease Resistance, Sam Tobin
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
ABSTRACT This long term study focuses on testing various hazelnut cultivars for yield, nut quality and disease resistance. There are various cultivars that are being tested for these desired traits but only the Grand Traverse and Skinner will be applicable for the results of this localized study. The desired traits of commercial nut production are best matched by these two cultivars. Results from previous harvests will be used to draw trends to recommend commercially functional cultivars in Eastern Nebraska.

Genetic Control Of Sorghum Grain Color, René Clará Valencia, William L. Rooney
Genetic Control Of Sorghum Grain Color, René Clará Valencia, William L. Rooney
INTSORMIL Presentations
Today there is a real interest in the utilization of sorghum grain as a substitute for wheat in baked goods and as a substitute for yellow maize in animal feed. Sorghum grain color and quality are important characteristics in the baking and livestock feed industries. For that reason it is necessary to develop varieties that are suitable for the food and feed industries.
The purpose of this bulletin is to briefly describe the main genetic characteristics that objectively affect sorghum grain appearance and quality.
The pericarp and glume color affect the color of the finished products made with sorghum grain. …

Plan To Support Grains Industry Development 2009-2012, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Grain and other field crops published reports
The Plan to Support Grains Industry Development (‘the Plan’) recognises that Western Australian agricultural industries are integral to the economic wellbeing of regional and rural communities. The Plan promotes a progressive and profitable grains industry through modern best practice services and research to enhance continuous improvement in farming and supply chain practices.
The Plan has been developed to align with the Government of Western Australia’s initiatives, strategies and tactics for ‘making every hectare count’ (see Appendix 1) and with grains industry needs as identified by industry stakeholders during a series of consultation forums. These industry needs will be addressed in …

Quantitative Trait Loci For Seedling And Adult Plant Resistance To Stagonospora Nodorum In Wheat, Manisha Shankar, Esther Walker, Hossein Golzar, Rob Loughman, R E. Wilson, Michael Francki
Biosecurity Research Articles
Stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB) caused by Stagonospora nodorum is a severe disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum) in many areas of the world. S. nodorum affects both seedling and adult plants causing necrosis of leaf and glume tissue, inhibiting photosynthetic capabilities, and reducing grain yield. The aims of this study were to evaluate disease response of 280 doubled haploid (DH) individuals derived from a cross between resistant (6HRWSN125) and susceptible (WAWHT2074) genotypes, compare quantitative trait loci (QTL) for seedling and adult plant resistance in two consecutive years, and assess the contribution of QTL on grain weight. Flag leaves and …

Australian Temperate Strawberry Breeding Program (Albany Western Australia) Screening Of Advance And New Selections For Albany Western Australia - 2006/2007, Shane Trainer, Dennis Phillips, Hal
Horticulture research reports
Fourteen intermediate day neutral selections from the Australian temperate breeding program were compared in a June trial planting on a commercial property in the Albany region. Intermediate selections were derived from crosses made between 1999 and 2002. Three advanced 'short day' selections were compared for yield, both as trial plots (10 plants) and as large plot demonstrations of up to 500 plants. Accompanying these selections, six named day neutral, three short day and four Queensland cultivars of different runner origins were compared. Camarosa, Selva and Diamante were included as commercial controls.
Day neutral selections 02-083-24 and 02-83-311 were potentially superior …

Horticulture research reports
Horticulture Australia (HAL) Project No. VG04018.
Project VG 04018 ‘Enhancing fertiliser use efficiency for transplanted vegetables’ showed that spraying highly concentrated solutions containing nitrogen over newly transplanted vegetable seedlings for between 14 and 21 days after planting can increase marketable yields by as much as 300% compared to other methods of fertiliser application. Crops that this method has been successfully tested on in this study by the W.A. Department of Agriculture and Food include iceberg and Cos lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage (wombok), celery and cabbage.

Horticulture research reports
Thirty-two ‘Stage 4’ numbered selections (2004 crosses) from the Australian Temperate Strawberry Breeding Program were evaluated in unreplicated plots on a commercial property in Wanneroo for their potential under WA conditions. Seven of these have been selected as worthy of further testing. The priority selection among these was 04- 021-263, and the other six included 04-021-467, 04-037-102, 04-021-241, 04-021-172, 04-021-475 and 04-029-211.
In addition, 21 advanced numbered selections (Stages 5, 6 and 7) were also evaluated on the same grower’s property. Three of those were substantially larger plots and a later planting date. Of the first group of 18 selections, …

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The goal of this observational study is to identify productive hybrid hazelnut plants suitable for commercial production. The objectives of this studywere to 1) examine a plantation of hybrid hazelnut plants grown in Southeast Nebraska for the presence of eastern filbert blight (EFB); 2) identify high yielding hybrid hazelnut plants; and 3) characterize plant and nut features of selected high yielding plants.
Data were collected from a 3.64 hectare (9 acre) planting of 5,200 hybrid hazelnut plant located at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska. Plants were grown on 1.5 m x 4.6 m (5 foot x …
