His birth and death took place In New York State, but Nebraska nurtured his early development and schooling. He spent 15 years of his professional career at the University of Nebraska, followed by 33 years at Cornell University.

Interest in the development of light lands in the south-eastern wheatbelt was spurred by the many ex-servicemen seeking farms after the 1939-45 World War.
Previous attempts to develop this area had been frustrated by poor crop yields, and by the poor carrying capacity of those volunteer pastures which developed on cleared land.
Research into reasons for the poor crop results was begun in 1948-49 with trials sown by Messrs Smith and Halpin between Borden and Lake Grace. The results clearly showed the important role played by copper and zinc in successful crop growth. Since then, field trials have been conducted …

THE greatest responses to nitrogenous fertilisers can be expected in areas with a relatively long growing season.
In such areas light soils with a low nitrogen status provide the best prospects for addition of nitrogen—provided adequate moisture is available.

INSECT pests have been taking toll of mans' crops and herds since very early times and despite modern control techniques the annual loss is still very high.
It has been estimated that damage to stored grain alone may average 10 per cent, per year, or, in terms of the West Australian harvest, a loss by weevils of about twice the capacity of the large Midland Junction bin.

During the 1950's some farmers began to use sulphate of ammonia, and recently urea and anhydrous ammonia have become important.

Generally similar results may be expected from all the sources of nitrogen available for cereal growing.
The unit nitrogen price and the convenience of use of each fertiliser in the particular situation should be taken into account in deciding which fertiliser to use.
THE first point to consider when deciding which nitrogen fertiliser to use for wheat growing is the effectiveness of the nitrogen source in increasing crop yield. Second, the cost per unit of nitrogen must be considered.

EVERY year farmers use large quantities of superphosphate with cereal crops to overcome the inherent phosphate deficiency of West Australian soils.
The increase in the average rate used by farmers reflects the increasing amount of new land being cropped.
Good seasons and favourable economic conditions may also have influenced super rates.

The objectives of the research reported herein were to (1) become familiar with the technique of inoculating corn with Helminthosporium turcicum, (2) become familiar with a technique of evaluating the susceptibility of corn lines to H. turcicum, (3) become familiar with plant reaction and organism development in the various types of corn and (4) evaluate Turkish corn susceptibility in relation to various types of germ plasm in American corn lines in order to assist in combating the serious disease of Northern corn left blight in Turkey.

M l 2 8 , an early midseason fixed crossbred bred at the Merredin Research Station, Avon and P8304, a late midseason fixed crossbred from N.S.W, were the highest yielding oats in last year's trials.
Irwin was the highest yielding oat of early maturity.

IN 1966 farmers in the cereal areas of Western Australia sowed approximately 6.5 million acres of wheat, 1.2 million acres of oats, and 0.4 million acres of barley (mainly six-row).

THE wheat varieties Claymore, Gabo and Wagin have been withdrawn from the list of wheat varieties recommended by the State Wheat Advisory Committee for sowing this season, mainly because of their lower yield performances.
THE varieties Avon, Fulmark, Irwin and Kent are recommended for sowing in 1967 by the Coarse Grains Advisory Committee and the Department of Agriculture. The areas where satisfactory crops of these varieties can be grown are given in the map and table.

Cultural Practices For Seed Production From Established Stands Of Western Wheatgrass, D. E. Smika, L. C. Newell
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Fertilization and irrigation requirements and aftermath removal practices for maximum seed production from solid stand western wheatgrass were studied for three years near Oakley, Kansas. Conclusions from this study indicate that to obtain maximum quantity of highest quality western wheatgrass seed from established stands, the grass must be fertilized in the fall with at least 80 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Irrigation with sufficient water to fill the root zone in either the fall or early spring and again when the grass is in " boot" or heading is necessary. One hundred and twenty large scale trials will be planted at 38 centres in the Department of Agriculture's expanding cereal variety testing programme.
ACCORDING to statistical returns West Australian farmers grow well over 100 varieties of cereals. More than 80 of these are different varieties of wheat.
Only a few varieties are widely grown so one might ask why farmers continue to grow so many of the less popular types.
The obvious answer is that they believe such varieties to be both suitable and profitable for their particular conditions.
