This is the first report of results from a high protein-high lysine observation (HP-HL) nursery organized in 1974 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. Primary objectives of this nursery are to: (1) Systematically provide breeders and cooperators with superior genetic germplasm for elevated levels of protein and/or lysine. Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.

Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.

Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

The concept of growing degree days (GDD) originated with observations by Reamur (1735) that plant development is more closely related to the temperature accumulated to a given stage than with time alone. It was not until nearly 200 years later, however, that Merriam (1894), Livingston (1916) and Klages (1942) began to use temperature accumulations in plant distribution studies and in crop geography. In the early 1950's, a system involving growing degree days became widely used in the canning industry to schedule plantings and thus control time of harvest of rapidly maturing vegetables. Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense L.) presents a serious problem in the production of corn and soybeans in Kentucky.

Various rates of the thiocarbamates, dinitroanilines, carbamates, amides, ureas, and triazines were used in association with the crops corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans (Glycine max L.) to determine the degree of suppression on rhizomatous johnsongrass infesting the previously named crops.

Suppression was determined by selecting areas within each treated plot, counting the number of culms, then harvesting johnsongrass rhizomes. Dry weights of rhizomes were then determined as a measure of rhizome suppression.

Of all the plant nutrients, nitrogen has been subjected to the most extensive study. The amount of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is small while the quantity needed annually by crops is comparatively large. Of the macronutrients usually applied in commercial fertilizers, nitrogen seems to have the quickest and most pronounced effect on plant growth.

In applying the nitrogen fertilizer for crop use, one must be concerned with placement, form, and availability, and with keeping the fertilizer where it is placed throughout the critical part of the growing season. The nitrogen supply molded by non-leguminous plants is of extreme importance …

Western Australian farmers now have a legal responsibility to control stored grain insects on their farms.

Ten species of insects, usually referred to collectively as 'weevils', have been 'declared' under the Agriculture and Related Resources Act.

In Western Australia, grain storage insects are not found in standing cereal crops. Thus, it should be possible to set up a clean delivery "pipeline" from the paddock to the C.B.H. bin.

The spotted alfalfa aphid which is devastating lucerne crops in the Eastern States, could be introduced to Western Australia on lucerne hay which is fed en route to imported livestock. The Department of Agriculture has therefore alerted all inspection points about the possible danger.

The Department of Agricultureis maintaining traps specifically for the aphid, and has found no evidence of it yet.

No-tillage production of crops has developed and become widespread since the late 1950/s. No-till is dependent upon the use of broad spectrum herbicides to kill weeds already growing at planting time. Until recently, this has almost exclusively been paraquat (1,1'-dimethy1-4,4'-bipyridinium ion). Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] is a new herbicide which has great potential for use in no -tillage production.

Soybeans (Glycine max L.) were planted in the stubble after wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was harvested. All plots received applications of the residual herbicides alachlor [2-chioro-2',6'-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] and linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenv1)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea]. Breeder, foundation, and certified seed lots of Dawson alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., were tested to determine stability in performance during three generations of seed increase under certification. Two field experiments were conducted, a seeded forage yield test and a space-planted test. Greenhouse experiments included separate tests for resistance to pea aphids, spotted alfalfa aphids, and bacterial wilt. Results obtained on certified Dawson alfalfa seed classes in field and greenhouse experiments were in agreement with the original variety description.

While wheat is still generally the most profitable crop in Western Australia the relative profitability of barley and linseed has risen in the last few years; in southern areas they are likely to be at least as profitable as wheat.

Oats has fallen in profitability relative to wheat, and grain legumes have suffered a marked fall. Yields of these grains have increased with the introduction of new varieties but their price increases have not kept pace with those of wheat and barley. The main purpose of this study was to obtain information on forage yield and quality of four alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties that differed in level of resistance to potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) yellowing, when cut at three stages of growth in the second and third cuttings in field plots, with and without insecticide application. The protein and lysine content of wheat can be altered by breeding only if genetic variability exists for these traits. Lysine is a nutritionally limiting amino acid in wheat protein. Protein and lysine analyses of the common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection indicated that variability does exist for these traits. Some of the variability for protein and lysine among wheats of the World Collection may not be genetic in origin, because all the 12,000 wheats analyzed were not grown in the same environment. The new bacterial disease Leaf Freckles and Wilt (LFW) of corn (Zea mays L.) was first observed in 1969 on two farms in southcentral Nebraska. Since then it has spread to other areas in the state. LFW is a serious disease on farms in six Nebraska counties (Clay, Custer, Dawson, Furnas, Hall and Phelps) and has been found in isolated cases in at least 28 other counties. In 1971 LFW was found in a seedcorn field in western Iowa, in 1973 in two Kansas counties, and in 1974 in South Dakota and Colorado. Because of its explosive nature, several …
