Arkansas producers should acquaint themselves with all marketing methods available to them. Of particular importance is the pervasiveness of price risk within the current economic climate. This bulletin provides insights into the current structure of the grain marketing industry, soybean handler characteristics, and the availability and use of marketing alternatives in Arkansas. Arkansas soybean handlers were surveyed in 1998 to determine the marketing practices of both handlers and producers for the 1996 crop year. Lavender oil is an essential oil, derived from plants (genus Lavendulai primarily by steam distillation of the flowers. There are several types of lavender oil. The 'true' lavender oil, and the most highly prized, comes from Lavendula augustifolia; it is primarily used in the fragrance and perfume industry. World production is about 200 tonnes per year. Spike lavender oil, derived from Lavendula latifolia, has a world production of about 150-200 tonnes per year. Lavandin oil is derived from hybrids of L. augustifolia x L. latifolia that yield much higher than L. augustifolia but the oil is lower quality, hence it …

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Many farmers in Arkansas and other parts of the United States are experiencing financial stress. The purpose of this report is to highlight the situation of Arkansas farmers and to offer an outlook for 2000. The report emphasizes the production, price, income, financial, farmland value, and interest rate outlook for Arkansas farmers and considers the impact of the macroeconomy on agriculture. The contribution of poultry production to the Arkansas agricultural economy is also presented and analyzed.

The bulb onion (Allium cepa var. cepa), together with chives, garlic, leeks, shallots and spring onions are members of the Amaryllidaceae family. The origins of the plant are from the Middle East, where it grew in an arid climate and on shallow, stony soils. Onions were grown as a food crop 5000 years ago in Egypt.

The edible part is a bulb that consists of swollen leaf bases. It contains 90 to 95 per cent water and provides soluble carbohydrates and vitamin C. The onion is the most common flavouring and aromatic vegetable in the world. The flavour is characterised …

The main text of this document concentrates on the costs of the proposed strategies, and the on-farm financial benefits from forecast production changes - in particular the production differences between the 'do nothing' and 'with strategy' scenarios.

Members of the catchment group indicated however that their main focus was on preserving their capital base. Hence some discussion of the values of land lost to salt and premiums/discounts for 'landcared' vs 'unlandcared' land appears later in the report. A survey was conducted by personal interview of nearly 80 per cent of Western Australian export carrot growers to determine the range of business profiles and production practices prevailing in the industry in 1996-97. The study provided significant information which the industry can use to guide future development and to benchmark its performance.

The industry was characterised by a high level of Australian ownership and a healthy mix of family and corporate ownership and vertical integration. Capital investment in production was high, potentially inhibiting new entrants to the industry.

Budgeting methods are used to determine the profitability of investing in a 10 ha vineyard in the south-west of Western Australia. In this study, the Myanmar rice economy is described in the context of the current political situation and state of national economic development. The forces that are changing rice production and exports are identified; however, the rate of development involves a complex integration of government intervention and politics, as well as availability of resources. Probable scenarios for rice production and export are projected based on recent growth trends and expected infrastructure development. The Arkansas Global Rice Model is used to integrate the Myanmar rice sector with the global rice market in developing projections.

There has been growing interest among nations in the western hemisphere in preferential trading arrangements (Taylor et al., 1995; Schuh and Junguita, 1993). Since 1990, 33 regional agreements have been registered with the World Trade Organization — the supranational organization that sets the rules for international trade (Blandford, 1995). One of the most important of these trading arrangements is the Mercado Comun del Sur (Common Market of the South), commonly referred to by its acronym, the MERCOSUR. After a 40 year period over which wheat prices have dropped by an average of 2.7 per cent annually in real terms, fundamental changes in wheat supply and demand look set to reverse this trend. It is possible that real prices could increase by as much as 4 per cent anually in the medium term.

A discrete stochastic programming model of the farming system of the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia is used to examine the effect of tactical responses and risk aversion on wheat supply. Including within-season tactical changes to wheat areas decreases the own-price elasticity of supply. By contrast, introducing risk aversion has no consistent effect on the own-price elasticity of supply. The implications for supply models are discussed.

Site selection -Paddock selection is critical for a successful canola crop. Avoid paddocks with waterlogging, wind erosion and broadleaf weeds - particularly wild radish, turnip, mustard and doublegees.

Soil type - Canela grows well on most soil types, however it prefers well drained gravel soils, red loams, sandy _loams and deeper duplex soils. Soil pH levels (in CaCl_²) of 4.5 to 8.0 are suitable. Soil test paddock for pH, phosphorus, and potassium levels.
