Utah is naturally an arid state with precipitation varying from 3.71 inches at Wendover, located in the vast desert region on the western border, to more than 40 inches on some of the mountain ranges. Desert and mountain areas and other untillable land combined total about 95 per cent of Utah's land area. The remaining 5 per cent constitutes all the land which will yield to cultivation either by irrigation or by dry-farming.

During the last 20 years there has been a marked change in the type of hogs from the short-legged, wide-bodied or "hot-blood" type to a longer, somewhat more narrow-bodied, "leggier" type. For development of size in hogs they must have (1) length and depth of body, (2) length of leg, and (3) large but not coarse bones. The long-bodied rather "leggy" pig grows rapidly and makes the larger hog. While the modern hog is still a lard hog, it is not as thick and broad as were its predecessors. Coccidiosis is a highly contagious disease of chickens and other fowls which is widespread and destructive, especially to half-grown chickens. The heaviest losses occur in chicks from 2 to 10 weeks of age. Just prior to and during their first laying season, pullets sometimes become affected with the disease in a chronic form. The cause is a microscopic protozoan parasite, the oocyst form of which is present in the droppings of diseased birds in large numbers. At least three species of the parasite have been recognized in fowls. The severity of the outbreak is thought to be determined by the …

This publication aims to give a brief summary of this work as it relates to crop yields as well as the more recent results up to and including 1929.

During the past 10 or 15 years alfalfa-seed has constituted the major crop in western Millard County and in most of that portion of the Uintah Basin which is situated in Utah. In these sections of the state various natural conditions generally have been favorable for seed production. Within the last five years seed growers have thought that one of the principal limiting factors of the industry has been the alfalfa-seed chalcis-fly. Accordingly, a preliminary survey in the seed districts of the state was made in the fall of 1925 by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

Utah is rapidly developing an important dairy industry. In addition to homegrown hay and grain, there must be some form of succulence. Pasturage is the common way of furnishing fresh feed in summer. In certain regions, silage and beet pulp are the winter forms. With a scarcity of beet pulp, silage corn is likely to be an important crop in the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake Valleys, where corn does well. The data presented in this publication are related to the choice of a corn variety for ensilage.

Treehopper injury is a problem that has given many fruit growers in Utah some concern during recent years. These people have observed that their young fruit trees and the twigs and smaller branches of older trees have been attacked during the autumn of each year in a manner that produced numerous cuts which later formed scars. The trees frequently became unthrifty, and more or less deformed and stunted, as a result of these annual attacks.

The investigation reported in this publication was made for the purpose of ascertaining the present status of the treehopper situation in Utah orchards.

The sugar-beet industry of Utah, and many other western states, has suffered enormous losses from curly-top. Under natural conditions this disease is transmitted, so far as known, solely through the feeding of the beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), the so-called "white fly." The serious damage of 1924 and 1926 has especially emphasized the necessity for more knowledge concerning the problem.

The Mexican War ended in 1846, but the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was not signed until 1848. Meantime, Utah was occupied by the Mormon pioneers, who having no land laws to guide them took land according to a plan furnished by Brigham Young. In Salt Lake City 10-acre blocks were divided into 8 building lots of 1 1/4 acres each. Just at the edge of the city were "five acre lots to accommodate mechanics and artisans; next beyond were 10-acre lots, followed by forty and eighty acres, where farmers could build and reside."

Potatoes were the first crop planted in Utah. In July 1847, the Mormon pioneers turned the water from City Creek over the parched land near what is now the center of Salt Lake City. The ground was then broken and sown at once to potatoes. Only a small yield was obtained but this helped materially to eke out the meagre food supply until the harvest of 1848. During the several hard years that followed potatoes were among the most important foods for the pioneer settlers. Since then they have held a prominent place in the agriculture of the state.

Insects destroy many sugar-beets in Utah. In some years the incomes of the farmers of the state are greatly reduced because of the ravages of these pests. This circular has been written in the hope that the more important information about the insect pests of this valuable crop may be more readily available to the beet growers of the state.

The insects treated in this paper are grouped under two main heads. In the first division are included those insects affecting the tops or foliage of the beet. In the second division are those insects that feed on the roots.
