Flax has been considered as a possible crop for growing under irrigation in Utah because of its high acre return in some of the northern States. One of the functions of a State experiment station is to test new crops and varieties. A series of experiments , therefore, has been conducted in Utah to determine the yields of flax as compared with small grains both under irrigation and on dry lands. This bulletin report s a summary of the results of these experiments together with a discussion of comparative returns from flax and small grains.

Range forage provides the foundation for the maintenance ration available for most sheep wintered in Utah. The nature and amount of supplemental concentrate or roughage needed with this forage to provide an adequate and efficient ration for sheep naturally depends on the nature and amount of range forage available. Present uncertainty as to the relative merits of the various available supplements originates largely through a lack of definite knowledge as to the composition and feeding value of the various range plants that go to make up the range-forage supply on the particular range in question.

A large portion of the agriculture of Utah, outside of the desert range areas, is characteristically heterogeneous rather than homogeneous in character. Marked differences in size of farm, in crops grown, in livestock kept, in yields, and in farm organization occur within short distances. This diversity is due in large measure to differences in soil, elevation, topography, and other physical features and to climatic characteristics such as amount, kind, and distribution of precipitation and length of growing season. Project 90-A Study of Factors Influencing the Financial Condition of Certain Utah Irrigation and Drainage Projects-was undertaken in 1928 as an intensified study of local areas. This study was divided among four departments, with a project leader for each particular phase of the study. These four project leaders, guided by the Station Director, have constituted a committee in immediate charge of this project. Subprojects and their respective leaders have been: A-Engineering and Engineering Economic Aspects, O. W. Israelsen; B-Soil Productivity Aspects, D. S. For a number of years it has been generally recognized that one of the most satisfactory methods of controlling Bang's disease in dairy cattle is to locate spreaders by means of the agglutination test and to eliminate them from the herd. The success of such a plan in relation to Utah dairy herds was not clearly understood because of the physical farm set-up peculiar to many communities in this state. Nearly one-third of the cropped acreage of Utah is devoted to cereals. Except for wheat, most of these crops are fed locally. In addition to this, an average of over a million bushels of corn, barley, and oats is shipped into the state each year to be used in various livestock and poultry industries.

The United States Census Report for 1930 shows that approximately 25 per cent of Utah farmers were growing oats at that time. Leading counties in oat production were Sanpete, Utah, Emery, Cache, and Weber, each of which produced over 100,000 bushels. Sanpete County produced over 200,000 bushels, whereas Boxelder, Sevier, Duchesne, and Salt Lake Counties produced slightly less than 100,000 bushels each.

In 1929 approximately one-fourth of the farmers of Utah were growing barley, with an average of 6.3 acres to the farm. Cache, Sanpete, Sevier, and Utah Counties each produced over 100,000 bushels. According to the United States Fifteenth Census Report (1930), Davis, Millard, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, and Weber Counties each produced from 40,000 to 70,000 bushels.

Wheat was one of the first crops grown by early Utah settlers. It has since occupied an important place in the agriculture of the state. While wheat is almost the only crop grown successfully on dry-lands, it is also important under irrigation. Thirty per cent of the wheat acreage of Utah in 1929 was spring-sown, which produced 44 per cent of the state's production. Eighty-seven per cent of the spring wheat acreage was grown under irrigation, this acreage producing 92.3 per cent of the total spring wheat crop. The cherry is rapidly becoming Utah's most important fruit crop. According to the 1930 census, there were 110,050 bearing and 114,230 non-bearing cherry trees in Utah orchards. Most of these trees are sweet cherries, the newer plantings consisting mainly of Bing and Lambert trees, although Napoleon predominated in the older plantings.

The problem of pollination is of more importance with the cherry than with other- fruits, because of the large number of individual fruits required to make a crop and because of the self-sterility and intersterility shown by the major commercial sweet varieties.

The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the distribution and extent of injury of some of the more important jointworm flies attacking small grains. These obscure enemies exact a yearly toll by causing a subtle shrinkage in the weight and a decrease in quality of grain yields and, incidentally, a shrinkage in the profits derived from the farmer's labors, In general, jointworm flies may be controlled by simple, previously-known methods of improved farm practices, requiring no additional outlay in cash but a better timing and proper execution of good farm practices.

Only within the last few years has the question of commercial fertilizers been worthy of serious consideration in Utah. The agricultural problems of the Carbon County Experimental Farm and of the locality which it serves are distinctly different from those of most of the farming localities of Utah. The low and uncertain winter rainfall, the comparative "rawness" of the soils, together with their almost infinite stickiness when wet, and the presence of considerable alkali throughout their body makes them peculiarly sensitive to time and manner of treatment and causes them to absorb water slowly and to erode readily.
