For many years alfalfa-seed production problems have engaged the attention of investigators in various parts of the world. Those factors which are regarded as of greatest importance in seed-setting are general climate, current weather, air humidity, soil moisture, and insect relationships within the various alfalfa-seed districts. Some attention in research has been given to pollen fertility and ovule sterility, as well as to general flower dynamics in relation to environmental conditions. Nearly one-third of the cropped acreage of Utah is devoted to cereals. Except for wheat, most of these crops are fed locally. In addition to this, an average of over a million bushels of corn, barley, and oats is shipped into the state each year to be used in various livestock and poultry industries.

The United States Census Report for 1930 shows that approximately 25 per cent of Utah farmers were growing oats at that time. Leading counties in oat production were Sanpete, Utah, Emery, Cache, and Weber, each of which produced over 100,000 bushels. Sanpete County produced over 200,000 bushels, whereas Boxelder, Sevier, Duchesne, and Salt Lake Counties produced slightly less than 100,000 bushels each.

In 1929 approximately one-fourth of the farmers of Utah were growing barley, with an average of 6.3 acres to the farm. Cache, Sanpete, Sevier, and Utah Counties each produced over 100,000 bushels. According to the United States Fifteenth Census Report (1930), Davis, Millard, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, and Weber Counties each produced from 40,000 to 70,000 bushels.

Wheat was one of the first crops grown by early Utah settlers. It has since occupied an important place in the agriculture of the state. While wheat is almost the only crop grown successfully on dry-lands, it is also important under irrigation. Thirty per cent of the wheat acreage of Utah in 1929 was spring-sown, which produced 44 per cent of the state's production. Eighty-seven per cent of the spring wheat acreage was grown under irrigation, this acreage producing 92.3 per cent of the total spring wheat crop. Relief, a new variety of hard red winter wheat resistant to most forms of covered smut occurring in Utah, was bred by the Department of Agronomy, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Produced by hybridization, it resulted from a response to an urgent need for some more effective means of controlling the serious disease of wheat known as covered smut or bunt. Practically all of the 85,000 hogs on the farms of Utah (as of August 1, 1934) are in the irrigated sections of the state where they fit in well with dairying. Utah, however, is a hog-deficient area and produces about 109,000 hogs less than are slaughtered in the state for its own use. Large amounts of milk by-products such as skim milk, buttermilk, and whey are produced in Utah. Up until this time the interest in poultry-breeding for egg production in this intermountain section was extremely limited; furthermore, there were few flocks on which trap nest and pedigree breeding records were kept.

The primary object in conducting these contests was to stimulate an interest in the breeding of better poultry. It has frequently been observed by practical stockmen that alfalfa hay produced on poor unproductive land has a much lower feeding value than hay produced on good productive land. Some have also observed that by the use of a supplemental feed rich in phosphorus (such as steamed bone-meal), the feeding value of this poor quality alfalfa hay may be improved, indicating that phosphorus deficiency is at least one cause of its low feeding value.

The cherry is rapidly becoming Utah's most important fruit crop. According to the 1930 census, there were 110,050 bearing and 114,230 non-bearing cherry trees in Utah orchards. Most of these trees are sweet cherries, the newer plantings consisting mainly of Bing and Lambert trees, although Napoleon predominated in the older plantings.

The problem of pollination is of more importance with the cherry than with other- fruits, because of the large number of individual fruits required to make a crop and because of the self-sterility and intersterility shown by the major commercial sweet varieties.

The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the distribution and extent of injury of some of the more important jointworm flies attacking small grains. These obscure enemies exact a yearly toll by causing a subtle shrinkage in the weight and a decrease in quality of grain yields and, incidentally, a shrinkage in the profits derived from the farmer's labors, In general, jointworm flies may be controlled by simple, previously-known methods of improved farm practices, requiring no additional outlay in cash but a better timing and proper execution of good farm practices.

Certain tracts of land in the West formerly used to produce grain and forage crops now produce only pasture grasses of comparatively low quality because of the water-logging and alkali accumulation which has occurred since irrigation was begun. Other tracts now producing only light crops of wild hay probably would produce profitable crops of alfalfa and clover, provided the water-table were lowered and the water-logged and alkaline condition of the soil removed. Still other areas are almost wholly nonproductive because of the concentration of excessive quantities of harmful alkali salts.

Wet beet pulp coming as a by-product from the sugar-beet industry in Utah is fed in varying amounts to dairy cows. Corn silage is also used to make up part of the dairy ration. Conflicting statements as to the value of the one feed as compared to the other indicated the need of more knowledge as to the value of pulp as compared to silage in the dairy ration. For this reason a study of the problem was initiated in February, 1926.

The Panguitch Experimental Livestock Farm is located three miles north of Panguitch, the county seat of Garfield County. Prior to 1909 it was held by the United States as an Indian school. In 1909 the United States Congress transferred title to the State of Utah. Two years later, in 1911 , the Utah Legislature decided that this property should "be used as an experiment station in connection with the Agricultural College of Utah ...", and control was vested in the Board of Trustees of the Utah State Agricultural College.

Little investigational work has been conducted on the effect of the hardness of curd of milk on the quality, quantity, and commercial value of cheese.

In July 1930, a preliminary report from the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station was made on these researches. This report indicated that for the manufacture of cheese hard-curd milk was far superior to soft-curd milk. This research is a continuation of that project.
