Treatment And Management Of Complex Knee Injury: A Case Report, K Braunreiter, S Kerwin

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Background: The “unhappy triad” injury includes tears of the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and medial meniscus. There is limited research on the prevalence and outcome of this injury. The unique surgical repair consisting of lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) was utilized to reinforce the anterior cruciate ligament repair (ACLR) and to prevent rerupture. Due to this extensive surgery, the patient struggled to regain full range of motion and quadriceps activation. This case is a Level 2 case study that explores the different interventions used to address the aforementioned objective deficits and return him safely to play. Patient: The patient …

A Proposed Return-To-Ride Protocol For United States Jockeys Following Concussion, Carolina Quintana, Kimberly I. Tumlin, Matthew C. Hoch, Nicholas R. Heebner, Bianca L. Grimshaw, Carl G. Mattacola

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Professional horse racing jockeys participate in a high-risk sport, however there is limited research and policies regarding welfare and safety. Despite the high incidence and risk of concussions, there are not standardized protocols for returning these unique athletes to participation following concussion. A return-to-ride concussion protocol for thoroughbred horse racing athletes must take into account the unique considerations and practices of the sport. Current concussion management strategies suggest removal from riding and activity when a concussion is suspected. This is followed by further evaluation for diagnosis, a period of both cognitive and physical rest before a gradual return-to-activity prior to …

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the implementation of performance-based tasks (PBTs) prior to completion of patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) would create a change, or a response shift, in PROs in patients with knee injuries. A randomized controlled trial was implemented to examine the effectiveness of a response-shift based interventions to enhance the correlation between PBTs and PROs. Participants (n=20) were knee-injured patients who were removed from activity for a minimum of 1-week. Participants were randomly assigned to complete PBTs (intervention) or to watch videos detailing an injury prevention program (control). The International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Pain Management, Nicolette A. Harris, Samar Long Jan 2021

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Pain Management, Nicolette A. Harris, Samar Long

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Pain is subjective, which makes its management a complicated task. The challenge of medical decision-making associated with pain often requires health care providers to rely heavily on their individual discretion and experience. This often creates an avenue for biases to play a role in the selection of the best available and most appropriate pain management interventions. Therefore, the overall purpose of this review is to summarize the current literature related to racial and ethnic disparities in pain management. Electronic searches of four databases revealed 2,112 articles; however, only six studies met criteria for inclusion in this review. Even when the …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Swallowing is a neuromuscular process that involves a complex sequence of sensorimotor events, which are executed to efficiently and safely transport food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. Safe oropharyngeal swallowing involves the activation, modulation, and coordination of oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and esophageal structures and musculature. Impaired or atypical patterns of swallowing are considered characteristic of a swallowing disorder, otherwise referred to as dysphagia, and affect the performance of all stages, i.e., oral preparatory, oral transit, pharyngeal, and esophageal. Lingual and jaw musculature play critical roles in mediating swallowing function, particularly during the oral preparatory and oral transit …

Novel Quantification And Localization Of Water And Solute Transporters In The Tissues Of The Spiney Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias), Tolulope B. Ojo

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The dogfish, Squalus acanthias is a marine cartilaginous elasmobranch found in the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Dogfish synthesize and excrete urea as a product of nitrogen metabolism. They also convert ammonia into urea and retain this urea, such that their plasma is isosmotic or slightly hyperosmotic to the surrounding seawater. To facilitate the regulation of body fluid and to maintain ionic concentrations and osmotic pressure, Dogfish use ion and solute transporters (e.g., NCC, UT-1) and aquaporin water channel proteins. Studies have identified some of the aquaporin genes in the elasmobranch genome, but their functions are mostly uncharacterized. Recent transcriptomic …

Using a mouse model of conditional and inducible in vivo fluorescent myonuclear labeling (HSA-GFP), sorting purification of nuclei, low-input reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS), and a translatable and reversible model of exercise (progressive weighted wheel running, PoWeR), we provide the first nucleus type-specific epigenetic information on skeletal muscle adaptation and detraining. Adult (>4 mo) HSA-GFP mice performed PoWeR for 8 wk then detrained for 12 wk; age-matched untrained mice were used to control for the long duration of the study. Myonuclei and interstitial nuclei from plantaris muscles were isolated for RRBS. Relative to untrained, PoWeR caused similar myonuclear CpG …

The Role Of The Co-Chaperone Protein Bcl-2-Associated Athanogene 3 (Bag3) At The Cardiomyocyte Sarcomere, Thomas Gwynn Martin Jan 2021

The Role Of The Co-Chaperone Protein Bcl-2-Associated Athanogene 3 (Bag3) At The Cardiomyocyte Sarcomere, Thomas Gwynn Martin

Dissertations

The co-chaperone protein Bcl-2-associated athanogene-3 (BAG3) is a central mediator of cellular protein quality control through autophagy. In the heart, decreased BAG3 activity through mutation or decreased expression are linked to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Unfortunately, though clinical data indicates BAG3 mutations are a definitive cause of DCM, few mechanistic studies had been performed to decipher the fundamental role of BAG3 in cardiomyocytes. However, several studies suggested BAG3 was involved in maintenance of the sarcomere, the molecular contractile structure in muscle cells. The goals of this dissertation were to: 1. Determine the functional significance of BAG3 for the sarcomere, 2. Identify …

Effects Of Low Degree Of High Ambient Temperature On Neural Pathways From Median Preoptic Nucleus To Arcuate Nucleus In Related To Food Intake., Pornsiri Suwannapaporn Jan 2021

Effects Of Low Degree Of High Ambient Temperature On Neural Pathways From Median Preoptic Nucleus To Arcuate Nucleus In Related To Food Intake., Pornsiri Suwannapaporn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

High ambient temperature (HTa) is one important environmental factor that decreases food intake (FI). It is well accepted that high degree HTa induced heat stress decreased FI by the activation of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) via hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. However, short-term low-degree HTa exposure has been demonstrated to decrease FI earlier than activated physiological and stress responses. This effect was related to the neuronal connection between the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) and arcuate nucleus (Arc). Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of short-term low-degree HTa exposure on the activity of hypothalamic Arc in regarding to FI, and …

A Computational Model Relating Tissue Oxygen Consumption To Oxygen Delivery In A Krogh Cylinder Model Of Skeletal Muscle, Raghad A. Alqahtani Jan 2021

A Computational Model Relating Tissue Oxygen Consumption To Oxygen Delivery In A Krogh Cylinder Model Of Skeletal Muscle, Raghad A. Alqahtani

Theses and Dissertations

Oxygen transport from a capillary to skeletal muscle tissue is a complex process that involves convective and diffusive mechanisms to deliver adequate oxygen to meet tissue metabolic activities. Typically, oxygen uptake in tissue is set by oxygen demand, which is set by metabolic activity. The relationship between the oxygen consumption (VO2) of an isolated perfused tissue and the rate of delivery of oxygen (QO2) to the tissue has been a subject of interest to many investigators over the past century. Experiments have shown that there is a critical value of QO2 below which tissue VO …

Impact Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness On Vascular Homeostasis In Premenopausal Women Consuming A Westernized High-Fat Meal, Lauren N. Pedersen Jan 2021

Impact Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness On Vascular Homeostasis In Premenopausal Women Consuming A Westernized High-Fat Meal, Lauren N. Pedersen

Theses and Dissertations

A large percentage of adults in industrialized nations consume a Westernized dietary pattern, which contributes to fasting dyslipidemia and increased risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Evidence suggests that a single Westernized meal containing high saturated fat may induce alterations in blood lipids as well as disturb multiple factors regulating peripheral vascular homeostasis, including innate immune cell function, oxidative stress, and vascular function. Conversely, participation in acute and chronic exercise may beneficially impact an individual’s postprandial response. Therefore, this dissertation contains three manuscripts seeking to describe how acute exercise, cardiorespiratory fitness, and physical activity level impact the lipemic and vascular homeostatic …

Short-Term Fasting And Autonomic Control, Joshua Gonzalez Jan 2021

Short-Term Fasting And Autonomic Control, Joshua Gonzalez

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Evidence suggests that chronic intermittent fasting improves cardiometabolic health and reduces arterial blood pressure. However, the mechanisms underlying the reductions in blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health observed from chronic fasting studies remain unclear. The autonomic nervous system has a central role in the regulation of blood pressure and is essential for cardiovascular homeostasis. We conducted a study to investigate how acute fasting influences autonomic control of blood pressure at rest and during stress. Twenty-five young, healthy, normal weight, normotensive participants were tested twice, once in the …

Physiological Impacts Of Lampricides On Invasive Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) And Non-Target Fishes, Razvan, Adrian Ionescu Jan 2021

Physiological Impacts Of Lampricides On Invasive Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) And Non-Target Fishes, Razvan, Adrian Ionescu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Parasitic sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) ingest large quantities of blood from fishes using their oral disc and rasping tongue, most often killing the host. In the early 1900s, sea lamprey invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes, decimating sport, commercial and culturally significant fisheries. Since the early 1960s, chemical control using the lampricides 3- trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) and niclosamide have helped to reduce sea lamprey populations by 90%. Lampricides are applied to larval lamprey nursery streams targeting many generations of lamprey at once. However, there is concern about the potential adverse effects of lampricides on other fishes, particularly vulnerable lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) …
