Health-Related Fitness And Energy Expenditure In Recreational Youth Rock Climbers 8-16 Years Of Age, Shannon R. Siegel, Jacob M. Robinson, Sean A. Johnston, Martin R. Lindley, Karin A. Pfeiffer

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(2): 174-183, 2015. Information on the characteristics of youth rock climbers is minimal. The purpose was to 1) Determine the influence of a three-month program of bouldering and vertical rock climbing on the anthropometry and health-related physical fitness of relatively novice youth climbers, and 2) determine whether rock climbing and bouldering in novice youth climbers can provide adequate levels of moderate to vigourous physical activity (US DHHS, 2008). Fifteen participants (11 males and 4 females; mean age = 11.5 ± 2.3 years) from a newly established youth climbing team were assessed twice weekly during their …

Effects Of A Smart-Phone Application On Psychological, Physiological, And Performance Variables In College-Aged Individuals While Running, Martin J. Moran, John M. Coons Apr 2015

Effects Of A Smart-Phone Application On Psychological, Physiological, And Performance Variables In College-Aged Individuals While Running, Martin J. Moran, John M. Coons

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(2) : 104-111, 2015. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of auditory exergaming through the use of a smart-phone app called Zombies, Run! on psychological, physiological, and performance variables in college-aged individuals while running. Participants included both males (n = 10) and females (n = 10). Participants ran three 15 minute trials, after which they completed motivational questionnaires regarding inspiration, enjoyment, confidence, and anxiety levels. The first run got the participants accustomed to the application. The second and third were randomly counterbalanced either using the application again or running with no …

The Effects Of Vascular Occlusion Training On Respiratory Exchange Ratio And Energy Expenditure When Coupled With Cardiovascular Training, Justin Sprick, Richard Lloyd, James Eldridge Mar 2015

The Effects Of Vascular Occlusion Training On Respiratory Exchange Ratio And Energy Expenditure When Coupled With Cardiovascular Training, Justin Sprick, Richard Lloyd, James Eldridge

James Eldridge

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(1) : 57-64, 2015. Vascular occlusion training is a novel training modality that has received considerable attention in the exercise science literature. The current study is the first of its kind to look at the effects of vascular occlusion training on substrate utilization when combined with aerobic training. This study examined the effects of pairing a vascular occlusion training protocol with a bout of submaximal aerobic exercise on energy expenditure (EE) and fuel use during exercise. Subjects performed a 20 minute bout of sub-maximal aerobic exercise either exclusively, or after performing a body weight squat …

Rider Energy Expenditure During High Intensity Horse Activity And The Potential For Health Benefits, Colleen L. Oreilly, Dennis H. Sigler, James D. Fluckey, Martha M. Vogelsang, Jason E. Sawyer Feb 2015

Rider Energy Expenditure During High Intensity Horse Activity And The Potential For Health Benefits, Colleen L. Oreilly, Dennis H. Sigler, James D. Fluckey, Martha M. Vogelsang, Jason E. Sawyer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Obesity and disease associated with sedentary lifestyles have become major concerns in the United States. Exercise has been described as a crucial part of disease prevention and overall health, with activities such as biking or running cited as examples. Horseback riding is a popular activity; however, little information on the exercise value of horseback riding exists. The objective of this experiment was to define the energy expenditure of participants in several common riding events. All procedures were approved by the Texas A&M Institutional Review Board and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; subjects gave written consent prior to participation. Twenty …
