The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of experimental alterations in relatively small amounts of excess weight on vertical jump height. The objective was to use the consequences of changes in body weight on vertical jump performance. The subjects were 19 Division I college volleyball players from the University of Northern Iowa. The mean value for age was 20.04 years, the mean height was 176.2 cm, the mean weight was 71.58 kg, and the mean percentage of body fat was 22.60% for all subjects. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between total blood cholesterol levels, blood triglyceride levels, and blood HDL levels in men and women 20 to 80 years of age. All subjects fasted for 12 hours prior to having their blood drawn.

The computer program SPSSX (SPSSX, Inc., 1988) was used along with subprograms CONDESCRIPTIVE, CORRELATION, and ANOVA. Pearson Product Moment Correlations were calculated for all subjects, for male subjects, and for female subjects.

The study revealed a low correlation coefficient between blood cholesterol levels and blood triglyceride levels for all subjects, female subjects and male subjects. There …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of specific cell types and structures at the active tooth movement site in corticotomized and non-corticotomized specimens obtained from a previous study, and to consider the hypothesis that corticotomy facilitated orthodontics is efficacious due to an inflammatory response rather than tooth-bone block movement. Specimens from 3 monkeys, each of which had a treatment and control quadrant in each arch, were sectioned, mounted on glass slides, and stained with Giemsa, haematoxylin, and Safranin stains. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that: 1) maternal and/or amniotic fluid catecholamines or prostaglandins display nocturnal activity rhythms similar to those of the myometrial contractility in the pregnant rhesus macaque and, 2) catecholamines stimulate prostaglandin production by fetal membranes. Paired maternal arterial blood and amniotic fluid samples were collected at 0900 h (AM) and 2100 h (PM) from chronically catheterized rhesus macaques until delivery and analyzed for prostaglandin metabolites (PGFM and PGEM-II) and catecholamines (norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine). The density and distribution of labeled cortical cells was examined following discrete deposits of retrograde tracers into the superior colliculus (SC) of neonatal and adult rats to study the topographic order of SC afferents from the cortex during the initial phase of axon ingrowth. Small deposits of red and green latex microspheres (0.02-0.05ul) were placed into the SC of rats ranging in age from birth to adulthood using glass micropipettes (tip diameter 25-35um). The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in physiological and subjective perceived exertion levels at maximal and submaximal treadmill exercise between three phases of the menstrual cycle in eumennorheic women.

Nine females of varying fitness levels were subjects in the study. None of the subjects were using oral contraception or hormone altering medications at the time of the study.

However, their use is limited because of the difficulty in maintaining a constant temperature, increased need for attention, and unwanted leaks or condensation from ice bags. The embryonal carcinoma PCC4uva differentiates into neurons in response to treatment with retinoic acid and dbcAMP. We used this in vitro model system to study the effects of laminin on early neural differentiation. Laminin substrata markedly potentiate neural differentiation of retinoic acid and dbcAMP-treated cultures. Only laminin induced more rapid neural cell body clustering, neurite growth and neurite fasciculation as compared to type IV collagen, type I collagen, and fibronectin substrata. Exogenous laminin substrata promoted greater cell attachment, cellular spreading and growth to confluence than type IV collagen, type I collagen, fibronectin and glass substrata. Hamster liver S9 prepared from control animals and animals given 30% glucose in drinking water 48 h before time of sacrifice was used in studies of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and aflatoxin (AFB₁)-induced mutagenesis, metabolism of BaP and AFB₁, and metabolite binding to calf thymus DNA. BaP-induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 was reduced 38.5% while AFB₁-induced mutagenesis was increased 36% by S9 from glucose-treated hamsters. The reduction of [³H]BaP metabolite binding to calf thymus DNA in incubations with S9 from glucose-treated hamsters correlated with a decrease in unknown BaP metabolite-deoxyribonucleoside adducts isolated by …

The study of the regulation of gene expression in complex genes can be facilitated by the use of operon fusions which place a well characterized lacZ gene under the control of a promoter of interest. An hsd::MudX128 operon fusion mutant of E. coli K-12 isolated by Prakash (1986) was observed to have a high β-galactosidase activity (1000 units), ten to twenty times higher than other hsd::MudX mutants. This β-galactosidase activity was suppressed to a very low level (25 units) by the introduction of an F’ plasmid, F'101, which carries the 98 min to 2 min region of the …

Multiple sclerosis causes demyelination of central nerve fibers, and it is this pathology which results in most of the symptoms of the disease. The repair of the fibers by remyelination has been advanced as a potential symptomatic therapy, but at present the conduction properties of remyelinated central fibers are not well understood. In this study the conduction properties of Schwannian or oligodendrocyte remyelinated central nerve fibers have been determined. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) have important influences on water and electrolyte metabolism, and studies on the interactions between these hormones may have important implications. We have investigated the effects of sodium intake, furosemide, and infusion of ANP on the urinary and metabolic (nonurinary) clearances of AVP in hydrated normal subjects. On a high sodium diet there was an increase in urine volume, sodium excretion, osmolal clearance, plasma ANP concentration, and urinary clearance and fractional excretion of AVP, with a decrease in PRA. Thirty-seven Chukars (Alectoris chukar), fitted with conventional poncho-type radio transmitters, were released on Antelope Island in Utah's Great Salt Lake. Twenty-seven removed their radios, averaging three days after release. The remaining 10 died from predation (average 15 days). Twenty-two Chukars with pleated and six with harness ponchos were then released. Five of the pleated ponchos were removed (average four days), and 17 resulted in mortality (average two days). All six harness poncho-equipped birds were dead the following day. Tympanometry is a useful means of evaluating the status of the middle ear. For the pediatric population, tympanometry is particularly valuable for determining the presence of middle ear effusion. The test has been incorporated in many school hearing conservation programs because of its ease of administration, objectivity, and diagnostic value.

In a study by deJonge and Cummings (1985), the hourly fluctuation of middle ear pressure was reported in a group of kindergarten-age children. Collagen binding proteins (CBP) are hydrophobic, cell surface polypeptides, isolated by collagen affinity chromatography. Antibodies to CBPs inhibit the attachment of embryonic chicken heart fibroblasts to native type I collagen fibrils in a dose-dependent manner. The CBP antibodies also induce rounding and detachment of cells adherent to a planar substratum. This process of antibody-mediated substratum detachment resulted in a clustering of CBP and cell-associated extracellular matrix at the cell surface, and the rearrangement of filamentous actin. Cholesterol oleate was demonstrated to be the cuticular contact sex pheromone of Dermacentor variabilis. This pheromone which has been termed the Mounting Sex Pheromone (MSP) was also demonstrated to be present on the surface of D. andersoni, Amblyomma maculatum and A. americanum. This contact sex pheromone enables males excited and attracted by 2,6-dichlorophenol to identify the female as a potential mating partner. The MSP is the second in the series of three sex pheromones guiding the hierarchy of behavioral responses which constitute tick courtship behavior. The intratumor distribution of a new monoclonal antibody-hapten-based delivery system was examined. From two marine antibodies, Hybritech, Inc. has developed a bifunctional antibody (BPA) with specificities against CEA (ZCE-025 or GEM 231) and against one of two derivatives of [¹¹¹In]-benzyl-EDTA (CHA 255), EOTUBE or BLEDTA IV, to form ZCE/CHA or CEM/CHA. BFA accumulates in CEA-expressing tissue and clears from non-antigenic tissues prior to administration of an [¹¹¹In]-hapten.

Fetal rat lung (FRL) cells incubated in the presence of retinoic acid or dexamethasone exhibit altered ¹²⁵I-epidermal growth factor (EOF) binding capacity. Retinoic acid enhances ¹²⁵I-EGF binding 3-fold following 24 hours of 37° incubation. In contrast, FRL cells incubated in the presence of dexamethasone display a 2-fold reduction in ¹²⁵I-EGF binding capacity. The change in binding capacity, induced by either hormone, was due to alterations in the average number of receptors per cell as determined by Scatchard analysis of ¹²⁵I-EGF binding. In the absence of retinoic acid or dexamethasone, FRL cells were calculated to have approximately …

Generally speaking, beta blockers increase serum VLDL level but decrease both HDL and HDL₂ cholesterol levels without affecting the LDL in humans. Winter habitat use and food habits of Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were studied in an isolated Utah desert mountain range that contained little typical Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) winter habitat. Habitat use was concentrated in the Douglas-fir and pinyon (Pinus edulis)–juniper (Juniperus spp.) habitat. Douglas-fir and pinyon pine were the most consumed foods. Other foods that represented >15% of the composition of an individual fecal sample were limber pine (Pinus flexilis), mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifoliu), juniper, and an Anteunaria–Cirsium type. Trends in age-specific, eviscerated carcass weights were determined for hunter-harvested yearling and two-year-old buck mule deer. Carcass weights declined over an 11-year period from two areas of similar management, but with independenly collected data sets. Carcass weights also declined between the opening and second weekends of the hunt. Management implications are discussed.

Pineal "synaptic" ribbons are a heterogeneous population of organelles. In addition to "synaptic" ribbons (SR) sensu stricto, which are electron-dense rods, "synaptic" spherules (SS) and intermediate forms (IMF) are present. The SS are electron-dense spherical structures, the diameter of which is two to three times the width of the SR. The IMF appear as irregularly formed structures. The SR, SS and IMF are surrounded by electron-lucent vesicles. Their function and origin are unknown and also a knowledge of their prenatal development is lacking.
