Sharing The Gift Of Water: A Hoosier-Haitian Partnership, Lauren Ward
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Engagement Methods for International Food Security (YDAE 49100) provided an opportunity for enrolled students to travel abroad to Cap-Haitïen, Haiti. As both a course in agriculture and a service-learning study abroad, the overarching goal was to inspire, engage, and teach Purdue and Haitian students through service learning in agriculture. This was done by developing a project with teammates during the fall semester that was then presented to students in Haiti during the International Agri-Symposium at Université Antenor Firmin over winter break.

Residues Of Thiamethoxam And Mefenoxam In Vegetative And Floral Tissue Of Soybean At The Early Reproductive Stage Resulting From Seed Treatments, Carolina Camargo, Daniel D. Snow, Sathaporn Onanong, Thomas Hunt, Blair Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Thiamethoxam with mefenoxam is the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticide/fungicide mixture applied to soybean (Glycine max [L]) as seed treatments. Based on the systemic nature of thiamethoxam and mefenoxam, residues of this insecticide/fungicide mixture may be present in soybean vegetative and floral tissue and negatively impact beneficial insects. Although neonicotinoids are often applied in combination with systemic fungicides, the research on ecological risks of neonicotinoids has been focused on the analysis of these compounds without considering their interaction with other agrochemicals. The objective of this study was to identify the concentration of thiamethoxam and mefenoxam in soybean flowers and …

Environmental And Anthropogenic Factors Affecting Coral Health, Kristin Jones
Environmental And Anthropogenic Factors Affecting Coral Health, Kristin Jones
2019 Symposium
Plastic pollution is a large and growing problem in our ever producing world. Not only does it litter our cities, but it is cluttering up the natural world as well, the largest being our oceans. Plastic is dumped into the seas where it floats and slowly breaks down into microplastics that are then ingested by marine animals. I will conduct an experiment to test the effects of micro plastics on coral health by subjecting palythoa corals to different plastic levels in a controlled environment. I hypothesize that corals will ingest micro plastics and will suffer health consequences, leading to a …

The Midwest wine industry has shown a marked increase in growers, hectares planted, wineries, and wine production. This growth coincides with the release of cold-hardy cultivars such as Brianna and Frontenac gris, in 2001 and 2003, respectively. These white grape varieties account for one-third of the total area grown in the state of Iowa. It is generally accepted that the wine aroma profile plays a crucial role in developing a local, sustainable brand. However, the identity of Brianna/Frontenac Gris-based wine aromas and their link to the grape berry chemistry at harvest is unknown. This study aims to preliminarily characterize key …
Is There A Correlation Between Epstein - Barr Virus (Mononucleosis) And Hodgkin’S Lymphoma?, Rooth Cohen
Is There A Correlation Between Epstein - Barr Virus (Mononucleosis) And Hodgkin’S Lymphoma?, Rooth Cohen
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Symptoms of acute Infectious Mononucleosis (IM), which develops after Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in half the cases, is strikingly like those of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (HL). This, combined with the findings that many patients with HL had a history of EBV and/or IM, triggered an interest in scientists to learn if the two were biochemically related. Many studies in this field unanimously concluded that the development of IM after EBV infection presented a higher risk of developing HL. However, whether this relationship is coincidental or pathological remains a matter of controversy until this day. In the last decade, there has been a …

Endorphins, Endocannabinoids And Runners’ High, Elisheva Winiarz
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Modern science takes at face value the fact that exercise is beneficial for man’s health. In recent years, medical health professionals have begun to harness exercise as a treatment for a broader range of maladies. Since various studies found increased exercise to correlate with higher levels of endorphins, most believed that the endorphins were directly responsible for what the vernacular dubbed “Runner’s High.” Scientists have sought to either augment or wholly disprove the endorphin hypothesis with further studies. Major Depressive Disorder, or MDD, is an affective condition affecting a significant portion of the general population. Aerobic exercise is increasingly being …

Is A Whole Food, Plant-Based Diet The Most Effective Treatment Of Arthritis?, Elisheva Liberman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Arthritis is a debilitating disease where joint inflammation occurs. There are different types of arthritis, such as Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the destruction of the articular cartilage that usually comes with age, whereas Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease. They both have symptoms which include reduced range of motion, pain and swelling. There are various treatments to alleviate the pain and reduce the inflammation of arthritis. Among them are medication, physical therapy, surgery and a whole food, plant-based diet. The whole food, plant-based diet yields the best results and is the most effective and practical.

The Effects Of Aging On Skeletal Muscle Atp Production, Chaya Abboudi
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The study of the aging process and its prevention is an incredibly popular field; the natural course of the human body is to age and theories abound on how to avoid it. Age affects every system and pathway of the body and alters many of the bodily functions. This paper, using articles from Touro’s library database examines the different areas in which aging negatively affects ATP production. The multifaceted process associated with the production of ATP in the human body was analyzed. Several features such as the mitochondria, physical activity, and hormones are linked to ATP production and the relationship …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
In this research dataset, we summarize for the first time volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted in vivo from ripening wine grapes. We studied four cold-hardy cultivars grown in the Midwestern U.S.: St. Croix, Frontenac, Marquette, and La Crescent. These cultivars have gained popularity among local growers and winemakers, but still very little is known about their performance compared with long-established V. vinifera grapes. Volatiles were collected using two novel approaches: biogenic emissions from grape clusters on a vine and single grape berries. A third approach was headspace collection of volatiles from crushed grapes. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used to collect …

Are Health Problems In Adulthood Linked To Our Experiences In The Womb? An Epigenetic Approach, Simone Tendler
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The origins of adult disease have been a prime topic for research, as deciphering causes can lead to strategies for preventions and cures. There has been recent intrigue focused on the environment in the womb. Records from England and Wales in 1911 show that those who suffered from cardiovascular disease were geographically correlated with regions high in infant mortality in the past, seventy years before the study. When looking into the cause of the neonatal death rates, low birth weight, poor maternal health, and high maternal death rates during childbirth were clearly associated. Barker inferred that there is much happening …

Tree Density And Diversity In Hong Kong’S Public Housing Estates: Fromprovision Injustice To Socio-Ecological Inclusiveness., Louis Shing Him Lee, C.Y. Jim, Allen Hao Zhang
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Socio-economically underprivileged urban communities might suffer from restricted access to urban forests. Environmental injustice research on urban greenery in Asian cities is lacking. Public housing estates in Hong Kong, accommodating low-income households and over half of the 7.45 million population, were investigated for injustice in tree provision. Two clustering schemes used socio-economic and ecological characteristics to classify 93 estates. Factor analysis of 14 socio-economic variables identified four factors related to deprivation, namely ageing population, overcrowding, working poor with high academic qualifications, and marginalised language minorities. Principal component analysis of six ecological indices returned two components related to tree density and …
The Biophysical Study Of The Efficacy Of Various Phospholipid Membranes On Daptomycin, Chaya Shor, Tamar Itzkowitz
The Biophysical Study Of The Efficacy Of Various Phospholipid Membranes On Daptomycin, Chaya Shor, Tamar Itzkowitz
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Daptomycin is an important lipopeptide antibiotic used in the treatment of systematic and life-threatening infections of the skin and underlying tissue caused by Gram-positive bacteria. Calcium and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) must be present on the target cell membrane for daptomycin’s mechanism of action to proceed. Calcium and PG also promote oligomerization, a formation that has been assumed to aid in the bactericidal process. The purpose of the experiments conducted was to understand the basic biophysical properties of membrane phospholipids as they exist in their pure and mixed monolayer forms. Furthermore, the experiments conducted attempted to discern how daptomycin penetrates the different …

Tree Distribution, Morphology And Modelled Air Pollution In Urban Parks, Yang Xing, Peter Brimblecombe, Sifeng Wang, Allen Hao Zhang
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Trees offer a range of ecosystem services and remain important in providing human benefits. However, emerging literature questions the long-accepted view of trees being able to improve air quality in urban parks. The aerodynamic effect of trees was identified as a major reason for the change of pollutant distribution in near-road parks, where trees can act as porous barriers and cause localised concentration increase. Although not yet fully developed, planting strategies aiming to mitigate the negative effect of vegetation on air quality should be encouraged in future park design. In this study, we explored the effect of tree planting design …

Are There Any Viable Treatments For Age Related Macular Degeneration?, Michael Radparvar
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Stem cells seem to offer an alternative venue for treating many cell related diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). ARMD is a progressive neurodegenerative medical condition, which primarily affects the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE), resulting in degeneration of photoreceptors. Scientists have been successful in implanting stem cells into the eyes of rats. These injected cells sustained visual function and photoreceptor integrity without any cancerous cell formation. There are numerous treatments available to slow down the progression of ARMD. Depending on the type of ARMD, doctors may either recommend leading a healthier lifestyle or that one should undergo surgery. Numerous …

Cognitive Rigidity In Patients With Anorexia Nervosa, Miriam Sheynblyum
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by significantly low body weight and over-evaluation of weight and shape in self-identity. The complex etiology of Anorexia Nervosa renders many current treatments ineffective, thereby prolonging the course of the illness. Among the many psychological and behavioral features of AN, cognitive features like obsessiveness, rigidity, and perfectionism are often described. Patients hold firm beliefs about an ideal body weight and find it difficult to alter their thinking patterns. Recent studies have identified a pathway to understanding this disorder through characterization of it’s cognitive features. With this research, advances have been made in …

The Role Of The Cell-Surface Protease Tmprss13 In Colorectal Cancer, Fausto Alexander Varela
Wayne State University Dissertations
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and deadly cancers in both men and women in the United States. Extracellular proteolysis is often dysregulated in cancer including (CRC), resulting in degradation of extracellular matrix, as well as cleavage, processing, or shedding of cell adhesion molecules, growth factors, and cytokines. Several members of the type II transmembrane serine protease (TTSP) family have been shown to play critical roles in cancer progression; however, many family members have not yet been characterized in malignancy. We identified TMPRSS13 transcript to be upregulated in CRC compared to normal colon. This increase was confirmed …

Does In-Vitro Fertilization Increase The Risk For Birth Defects?, Tehila Tropper
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Since 1978 when the first “petri dish” baby was born, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has been used as a tool to give couples struggling with infertility the opportunity to have children. Using this method of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the woman is given medication to stimulate her ovaries for the maturation of multiple eggs, which are then retrieved via needle aspiration, fertilized in a petri dish, and inserted in the uterus with the hopes of achieving a successful pregnancy. Many times IVF is completed with another technique known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where the sperm is injected straight into the …
Proposed Biomedical Applications Of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks As Drug Delivery Systems, Ariel Margaret Perry-Mills
Proposed Biomedical Applications Of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks As Drug Delivery Systems, Ariel Margaret Perry-Mills
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of highly crystalline nanoporous materials that self-assemble from inorganic metal oxide clusters and multitopic organic linkers. MOFs can be altered in terms of the types of metals and structures of organic linkers used, allowing for a high degree of customization and manipulation of the synergistic chemical or physical properties that arise from the precise coordination of their molecular components, including exceptionally large surface area and pore size. Zirconium-based MOFs, called UiOs in honor of their conception at the University of Oslo, also show remarkable chemical stability in both acidic and basic environments, making them …

An additional goal of this project was to characterize the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway to unravel the adverse potential of MH on the cardiovascular system (CVS). Our study suggested that MH-mediated cardiovascular injury may be caused due to upregulation of some major components of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway through expression of excessive pro-inflammatory mediators. Moreover MH decreased expression of ErbB3 and NRG-2 suggesting impaired cardiac structure. MH exposure caused a slow heartbeat blood occlusion absence of blood circulation decreased hatching efficiency and increased mortality in medaka embryos in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. MH might cause blood vessel occlusion by increasing the …

Diseases of pregnancy are the leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality affecting more than 20% (26 million) of all pregnancies annually. Those diseases include preeclampsia, preterm labor, intrauterine growth restriction and gestational diabetes, many of which are caused by compromised functions of the placenta. Placenta is a specialized organ that is only present during pregnancy where it creates a maternal-fetal interface that is responsible for many functions that contribute to the development of the fetus. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment for any of those diseases. Our work focuses on the development of a novel nanoplatform that …

Triggers Of Spermatogenesis, Moses Bibi
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Of the 7% of men affected with infertility, about 54% suffer from pre-testicular and/or testicular factor induced azoospermia/ oligospermia. This agenesis of spermatozoa has been the subject of much andrology research over the past 50 years, with a particular focus in the triggers of spermatogenesis. While much of their work is limited to murine populations, researchers have put a lot of emphasis on the spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) niche as the source of the trigger(s). By following physiological patterns exhibited in the seminiferous epithelium, researchers have been able to detect distinct morphological stages that correlate with spermatogonial germ-line action. Different …
