Relaxin As A Cure For Fibrosis, Sarah Akilov
Relaxin As A Cure For Fibrosis, Sarah Akilov
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Until recently, relaxin has been known as a hormone that pertained to the female reproductive system. Its ability to remodel the extracellular matrix is responsible for its known reproductive effects. Current research has indicated that it may be useful as a drug to combat fibrosis. Relaxin has been proposed as an antifibrotic drug to target a variety of organs, including the skin, lung, kidney, liver, and heart. Studies done using the relaxin null knockout mouse have given scientists insight into the workings of this hormone. Human studies have also been done to test the efficacy of relaxin in its reversal …

Uvb Induced Mutation Of P53 In Non Melanoma Skin Cancer, Raizy Berger
Uvb Induced Mutation Of P53 In Non Melanoma Skin Cancer, Raizy Berger
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
There is a clear correlation between excessive sun exposure and the development of skin cancer. UVB radiation from the sun is potent, and as the ozone layer gets depleted, more UVB can reach Earth and cause cell damage. UV radiation causes DNA lesions, such as 6-4 photoproducts and cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers are more abundant and take longer to be repaired and therefore are responsible for most of the mutation and DNA damage. These DNA lesions lead to mutation of the p53 gene. The signature mutation on p53 from UV radiation is a CC to TT mutation, which …
Neuraxial Analgesia And Its Effects On Neonatal And Maternal Outcomes, Tziporah L. Falkowvsky
Neuraxial Analgesia And Its Effects On Neonatal And Maternal Outcomes, Tziporah L. Falkowvsky
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Neuraxial analgesia is one of the most popular and effective forms of pain relief for labor and childbirth used by more than 50% of women in North America. Despite the standard use of the procedure, there is much that is still inconclusive about the side effects on mother and baby. Current studies show it has an impact on some outcomes and seemingly no effect on others. While the extent of the impact is still unclear, there are some adverse side effects of neuraxial analgesia, which include instrumental deliveries, respiratory distress and lower Apgar scores. Further research is required to conclude …

The Development Of Novel Non-Peptide Proteasome Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Solid Tumors, Zachary C. Miller
The Development Of Novel Non-Peptide Proteasome Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Solid Tumors, Zachary C. Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
The proteasome is a large protein complex which is responsible for the majority of protein degradation in eukaryotes. Following FDA approval of the first proteasome inhibitor bortezomib for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) in 2003, there has been an increasing awareness of the significant therapeutic potential of proteasome inhibitors in the treatment of cancer. As of 2017, three proteasome inhibitors are approved for the treatment of MM but in clinical trials with patients bearing solid tumors these existing proteasome inhibitors have demonstrated poor results. Notably, all three FDA-approved proteasome inhibitors rely on the combination a peptide backbone and reactive …
Development And Preclinical Evaluation Of Long-Lasting Cocaine Hydrolases For Cocaine Overdose And Cocaine Use Disorder Treatment, Ting Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Cocaine is a plant-based illicit drug commonly involved in substance use disorder. Although cocaine overdose and cocaine use disorders cause adverse health consequences to individuals and the economic burden on their family and society, there are no FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved medications for treatment. Recently, it has been recognized that delivery of cocaine hydrolase (CocH) is a promising therapeutic strategy. Human butyrylcholinesterase (hBChE), the primary enzyme involved in cocaine metabolism in human, have advantages over other candidates for the development of CocH. Previous studies in our laboratory have designed and characterized hBChE mutants that have ~4,000-fold improved catalytic …
Pressure-Driven Stabilization Of Capacitive Deionization, Landon S. Caudill
Pressure-Driven Stabilization Of Capacitive Deionization, Landon S. Caudill
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The effects of system pressure on the performance stability of flow-through capacitive deionization (CDI) cells was investigated. Initial data showed that the highly porous carbon electrodes possessed air/oxygen in the micropores, and the increased system pressure boosts the gases solubility in saline solution and carries them out of the cell in the effluent. Upon applying a potential difference to the electrodes, capacitive-based ion adsorption occurs in competition with faradaic reactions that consume oxygen. Through the addition of backpressure, the rate of degradation decreases, allowing the cell to maintain its salt adsorption capacity (SAC) longer. The removal of oxygen from the …
Pcb Disruption Of Gut And Host Health: Implications Of Prebiotic Nutritional Intervention, Jessie Baldwin Hoffman
Pcb Disruption Of Gut And Host Health: Implications Of Prebiotic Nutritional Intervention, Jessie Baldwin Hoffman
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Exposure to environmental pollutants poses numerous risk factors for human health, including increasing incidence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Persistent organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been strongly linked to the development of these chronic inflammatory diseases and the primary route of exposure is through consumption of contaminated food products. Thus, the gastrointestinal tract is susceptible to the greatest levels of these pollutants and is an important facet to study.
The first two hypotheses of this dissertation tested that exposure to PCBs disrupts gut microbiota directly (in vitro) and within a whole body system. PCB exposure …

Role Of Sex Chromosomes In Sexual Dimorphism Of Angii-Induced Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Yasir Alsiraj
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), a permanent dilation in the abdominal region of the aorta, is a highly sexually dimorphic disease. AAAs prevalence is ranging from 4-10 fold higher in males than females. Defining the mechanistic basis for reduced (in females) or increased (in males) AAA formation and progression may uncover potential therapeutic targets. The majority of studies examining sexual dimorphism focus on the role of sex hormones. However, genes residing on sex chromosomes, in addition to sex hormones, may contribute to sexual dimorphism of AAAs. For example, the X chromosome contains about 5% of the whole genome, but the role …
Delay Discounting And Cannabinoid Enzyme Inhibitors, Devin Andrew Galdieri
Delay Discounting And Cannabinoid Enzyme Inhibitors, Devin Andrew Galdieri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Delay discounting is a measure of impulsive choice that is correlated with maladaptive behavior and psychological disorders. Disruptions to serotonin and dopamine pathways can cause changes in delay discounting, as can lesions to the prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens. The endocannabinoid system modulates other neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine and serotonin pathways. Cannabinoid receptors type 1 are found in relatively high concentrations in the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex. These receptors are activated by endogenous cannabinoids, which are synthesized on demand and broken down by catabolic enzymes. The action of these enzymes can be inhibited by a class of drugs …

Impact Of Physico-Chemical Properties Of Manufactured Nanomaterials On Plant Uptake And Trophic Transfer, Jieran Li
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Large quantities of manufactured nanomaterials (MNM) are released into the environment by human activity each year. The entry of MNM into the terrestrial food webs, which has the potential for far-reaching impacts, begins with the uptake by plant species from the soil. These processes can be affected by MNM physico-chemical properties such as size, chemical composition, surface charge, etc., of which our knowledge is still incomplete. To bridge some of the gaps in our understanding of these processes and, specifically, to determine whether the physico-chemical properties of the MNM are predictive of their behavior in terrestrial food chains, we conducted …
