Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) are beverages that contain added sugars. Excessive consumption of SSB can have an impact on health. Some of the effects caused by SSB include obesity, fatty liver, type II diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, nutritional deficiencies, and dental caries. This research aims to determine the differences in the proportion of SSB consumption based on individual and environmental factors among students of the Faculty of Public Health UI (FPH UI) in 2023. Recent literature has demonstrated high rates of food insecurity in college students, with most estimates ranging from 30 to 40 percent. Additionally, the college diet is notoriously lacking in nutrition, and a large majority of college students do not meet the recommendations made by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Nutrition security, defined as an individual having consistent access, availability, and affordability of foods that promote wellbeing and prevent disease, addresses both of these issues.

Native American populations are disproportionately affected by obesity and its associated chronic diseases. Rural areas are also disproportionately affected by obesity and face significant challenges related to their food environment, food security, and food availability. The combination of these barriers make it challenging for rural, NA reservations to combat these health disparities and have opportunities to make healthy food choices.
