The most recent addition of the Dietary Guidelines of America have been released to the public, and has caused many questions to the community. The guidelines serve not only as a resource for the general public and a resource for local and national policy regarding nutrition. Because community nutrition is directly shaped by these recommendations, exploring its past implementations, present implications and possible future actions can help in understanding how these guidelines influence public health at local and national levels. • Liberia has an estimated 4.82 million citizens
• 84% have access to water
• 74% have access to drinking water within 30-minute walking radius

Research on Diarrheal Rates

• 6th leading cause of death for children under the age of 5
• In 2016, 6 out of every 1000 children in Liberia died of diarrhea
• Associated with malnutrition and stunted growth
• Hypothesis: Access to filters at the household level will be positively associated with reductions in diarrheal disease

Introduction:

Food insecurity prevalence in Washington County, TN is 14.3% yet 61% of SNAP eligible residents are food insecure. Food insecurity is associated with inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as increased risk of chronic disease. Tennessee ranks 47^th in the Nation with only 6.7% consuming the recommended fruits and vegetable intake. The Farmacy Pilot Program was developed to encourage increased consumption of produce and to reduce food insecurity among SNAP recipients.

Objectives

Participants being able to identify key terms on a food label.

That the participants will have an awareness of healthful portion sizes.

That the participants will be able to demonstrate this knowledge.

This was accomplished by an initial assessment, a review and a post assessment.

Each interview period had a discussion time and nutrition information was disseminated. Each participant received a one on one mentoring with the researcher covering basic nutrition content of foods during each interview.
