Associated Food Parenting Practices And Other Factors With Fruit And Vegetable Consumption In Students In Jakarta, Indonesia, Gina Amalia Chaerunnisa, Triyanti Triyanti
Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)
The increased risk of non-communicable diseases is still a problem in Indonesia, one of which is the lack of consumption of fruits and vegetables. The available data shows that although fruits and vegetables have a protective/protective effect on the incidence of non-communicable diseases but in real life, the average consumption of fruits and vegetables is still below the recommended intake. Thus, the protective effect cannot be seen clearly. This study aims to describe the consumption of fruits and vegetables and determine the factors of food parenting practices and other factors related to the consumption of fruits and vegetables in students …
The Impact Of Nutrition On The Mental And Physical Health Of Young Adults, Dareena El-Far
The Impact Of Nutrition On The Mental And Physical Health Of Young Adults, Dareena El-Far
WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing
Upon close examination by nutritional professionals, concern has arisen regarding the typical contents of a young adult diet. In terms of the rate at which young adults choose to consume nutritionally-dense food items, the rate at which nutrition-deficient junk food items are chosen over the former is significantly higher. Among further examinations of this issue by researchers, it has become evident that the nutritional decisions made by young adults are increasingly associated with several social, commercial, mental, educational, and economic influences. As a consequence of these factors, research has uncovered a connection between the consumption of a poor diet and …

Freestyle: A Guide To Making Swimming Nutrition Simple, Megan Wills
Freestyle: A Guide To Making Swimming Nutrition Simple, Megan Wills
Undergraduate Theses
Nutrition plays a critical role in the performance of an athlete. Although academic research surrounding the topic has increased, there is a disproportionate increase in materials created for the athletes themselves. Regarding competitive swimming, the scope of athlete-friendly instructional materials is even more limited. Therefore, there is an inherent disconnect between the academic research on the topic of competitive swimming nutrition and the athletes who need the information. The purpose of this project is to bridge the gap between the research and the content accessible for athletes themselves. Using an interpretive and simplistic approach, the available academic research was used …

Several environmental level factors exacerbate poor health outcomes in rural populations in the United States, such as lack of access to healthy food and locations to be physically active, which support healthy choices at the individual level. Thus, utilizing innovative place-based approaches in rural locations is essential to improve health outcomes. Leveraging community assets, like Cooperative Extension, is a novel strategy for implementing community-driven interventions. This prospective cohort study (n = 152), recruited in 2019 and surveyed again in 2020 and 2021, examined individual level changes in diet and physical activity in one rural Appalachian county. During this time, multiple …

Gut Microbial Metabolite Indole: A Stimulator Of Enteroendocrine Cell Differentiation Via Activation Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, James Hart
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) regulate energy balance and glucose homeostasis by releasing hormones in response to food intake. Dysregulated EEC differentiation is observed in obesity, while gut microbiota metabolites influence this process. Here, we investigated the role of indole, a biologically active gut microbial metabolite, in EEC differentiation through aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation. Human intestinal organoids derived from jejunal mucosal biopsies were exposed to indole. Indole treatment significantly increased mRNA levels of chromogranin A, an EEC marker. The effect was reversed by an AhR antagonist, indicating AhR involvement. Indole also upregulated AhR target gene mRNA levels. These findings highlight the …

The Impact Of Habitual Dietary Fat Intake On Postprandial Lipemia In Older Adults, Sophia A. Bollinger
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Postprandial lipemia (PPL) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Many older Americans experience elevated PPL due to a chronically high-fat diet and an inefficient ability to clear triglycerides (TG) from circulation. TG levels are typically measured in a fasted state; however, postprandial TG levels may be more strongly associated with CVD risk. This study grouped ten older adults into two dietary consumption fat categories and examined the response to an acute high-fat meal by measuring postprandial blood cholesterol, TG, and glucose (GLU) at baseline, 30-minutes post-meal, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 180 minutes, and 240 minutes. Because FCS agents teach communities about dietary guidelines, it is important that they are aware of the latest nutrition research. This study assessed FCS agents’ knowledge of popular fad diets (low-carbohydrate, intermittent fasting, detoxes and cleanses) and their potential adverse effects, and its relationship among location, certifications, years of experience, professional association memberships, and education. Agents in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi were emailed a survey. RDN, DTR, and CHES certifications had significant associations (p = 0.03) with knowledge of adverse effects of fad diets. Agents who hold these credentials may have more knowledge about adverse effects of fad diets.
