In this dataset, we present the spectral variability of oil slicks under different observing conditions using MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer), MISR (Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and AVIRIS (Airborne Visible/ Infrared Imaging Spectrometer). Optical remote sensing is commonly used to detect oil in the surface ocean due to the spectral differences between oil and water, allowing to modulate oil–water spatial and spectral contrasts. This dataset contains Rayleigh corrected reflectance data from 19 MODIS images collected between April and July 2010, along with their corresponding maps of surface oil volume, maps of relative oil thickness of different classes, and maps of probability distributions of different thicknesses. Surface oil was estimated by spatially scaling up AVIRIS observations to synoptic MODIS measurements, which were the used to derived oil classification and probability maps.

It has long been observed that oil slicks under sunglint can reverse their optical contrast against nearby oil‐free seawater. Such a phenomenon has been described through both empirical statistical analysis of the sunglint strength and modeled theoretically using a critical angle concept. The critical angle, in this model, is the angle at which the image pixels show no or negligible contrast between oiled and nonoiled seawater. Pixels away from this critical angle show either positive or negative contrast from the oil‐free pixels. Natural oil slicks in the western Gulf of Mexico are used to determine the sun glint threshold required for optical remote sensing of oil films. The threshold is determined using the same‐day image pairs collected by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra (MODIST), MODIS Aqua (MODISA), and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) (N  = 2297 images) over the same oil slick locations where at least one of the sensors captures the oil slicks. A novel approach was used with data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to characterize the intense blooms of cyanobacteria (primarily Microcystis aeruginosa) in Taihu Lake, China's third largest freshwater lake. The approach involves first deriving a floating algae index (FAI) based on the medium‐resolution (250 and 500 m) MODIS reflectance data at 645, 859, and 1240 nm after correction of the ozone/gaseous absorption and Rayleigh scattering effects and then objectively determining the FAI threshold value (−0.004) to separate the bloom and nonbloom waters.
