Decomposition Of Sediment-Oil-Agglomerates In A Gulf Of Mexico Sandy Beach, Ioana Bociu, Boryoung Shin, Wm Brian Wells, Joel E Kostka, Konstantinos T Konstantinidis, Markus Huettel

C-IMAGE Publications

Sediment-oil-agglomerates (SOA) are one of the most common forms of contamination impacting shores after a major oil spill; and following the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) accident, large numbers of SOAs were buried in the sandy beaches of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. SOAs provide a source of toxic oil compounds, and although SOAs can persist for many years, their long-term fate was unknown. Here we report the results of a 3-year in-situ experiment that quantified the degradation of standardized SOAs buried in the upper 50 cm of a North Florida sandy beach. Time series of hydrocarbon mass, carbon content, n-alkanes, PAHs, …

Density-Dependent Condition And Growth Of Invasive Lionfish In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kristin A. Dahl, Morgan A. Edwards, William F. Patterson Iii

C-IMAGE Publications

Absent natural population control, invasive red lionfish Pterois volitans (hereafter, lionfish) have reached record densities in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM), though the role of density dependence on their population dynamics remains poorly understood. This study examined the effects of population density, sex, and habitat on lionfish condition (i.e. mass relative to total length) and size-at-age. Lionfish density was estimated with a remotely operated vehicle during 2010-2017 at a series of nGOM natural (n = 16) and artificial (n = 22) reefs, and individual lionfish (n = 3296) were sampled at additional reefs in the same system between 2013 …

Evolving And Sustaining Ocean Best Practices And Standards For The Next Decade, Frank Muller-Karger

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The oceans play a key role in global issues such as climate change, food security, and human health. Given their vast dimensions and internal complexity, efficient monitoring and predicting of the planet’s ocean must be a collaborative effort of both regional and global scale. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, …

The Coastal Ocean Circulation Influence On The 2018 West Florida Shelf K. Brevis Red Tide Bloom, Robert H. Weisburg, Yonggang Liu, Chad Lembke, Chuanmin M. Hu, Katherine Hubbard, Mathew Garrett

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Blooms of the harmful alga, Karenia brevis on the west Florida continental shelf are thought to initiate offshore before manifesting as a nuisance along the coastline. Contributing to such blooms are a complex sequence of events occurring within oligotrophic waters, which in any given year may or may not be facilitated by the ocean circulation. Once initiation occurs, the delivery from the region of offshore origination to the region of coastline manifestation requires an upwelling circulation, whereby K. brevis cells are advected shoreward along the bottom. The 2018 K. brevis bloom was particularly intense owing to cells from the …

Petrocarbon Evolution: Ramped Pyrolysis/Oxidation And Isotopic Studies Of Contaminated Oil Sediments From The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill In The Gulf Of Mexico, Kelsey L. Rogers, Samantha H. Bosman, Mary Lardie-Gaylord, Ann Mcnichol, Brad E. Rosenheim, Joseph P. Montoya, Jeffrey P. Chanton

C-IMAGE Publications

Hydrocarbons released during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill weathered due to exposure to oxygen, light, and microbes. During weathering, the hydrocarbons’ reactivity and lability was altered, but it remained identifiable as “petrocarbon” due to its retention of the distinctive isotope signatures (14C and 13C) of petroleum. Relative to the initial estimates of the quantity of oil-residue deposited in Gulf sediments based on 2010–2011 data, the overall coverage and quantity of the fossil carbon on the seafloor has been attenuated. To analyze recovery of oil contaminated deep-sea sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico we tracked the …

Spectral Variability Of Oil Slicks Under Different Observing Conditions Derived From Satellite And Airborne Optical Remote Sensing, Chuanmin Hu

C-IMAGE data

In this dataset, we present the spectral variability of oil slicks under different observing conditions using MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer), MISR (Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and AVIRIS (Airborne Visible/ Infrared Imaging Spectrometer). Optical remote sensing is commonly used to detect oil in the surface ocean due to the spectral differences between oil and water, allowing to modulate oil–water spatial and spectral contrasts. However, understanding these contrasts is challenging because of variable results from laboratory and field experiments, as well as different observing conditions and spatial/spectral resolutions of remote …

Sources Of Carbon To Suspended Particulate Organic Matter In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Kelsey L. Rogers, Samantha H Bosman, Sarah Weber, Cedric Magen, Joseph P. Montoya, Jeffrey Chanton

C-IMAGE Publications

Suspended particulate organic carbon (POCsusp) in the Gulf of Mexico is unique compared to other seas and oceans. In addition to surface primary production, isotopic analysis indicates that microbial cycling of oil and riverine inputs are primary sources of carbon to POCsusp in the Gulf. To characterize POCsusp from seep sites and non-seep north central Gulf (NCG) sites potentially affected by the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) spill, we analyzed 277 and 123 samples for δ13C and Δ14C signatures, respectively. Depth, partitioned into euphotic ( < 300 m) and deep ( > 300 m), was the main driver of spatial δ …

Dispersant application is a primary emergency oil spill response strategy and yet the efficacy and unintended consequences of this approach in marine ecosystems remain controversial. To address these uncertainties, ex situ incubations were conducted to quantify the impact of dispersant on petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) biodegradation rates and microbial community structure at as close as realistically possible to approximated in situ conditions [2 ppm v/v oil with or without dispersant, at a dispersant to oil ratio (DOR) of 1:15] in surface seawater. Biodegradation rates were not substantially affected by dispersant application at low mixing conditions, while under completely dispersed conditions, biodegradation …

Sedimentary Age Models, Benthic Foraminifera, Mass Accumulation Rates, And Volcanic Grain Data From R/V Justo Sierra Cruise In The Southern Gulf And Ixtoc I From 2015-08-03 To 2015-08-06, Patrick Schwing

C-IMAGE data

This dataset includes age models, benthic foraminifera species counts used for stable isotope analysis, mass accumulation rates and volcanic grain counts from 6 sediment cores collected throughout the southern Gulf of Mexico during the R/V Justo Sierra cruise in the Southern Gulf and Ixtoc I from 2015-08-03 to 2015-08-06. Samples were analyzed by gamma spectrometry with High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detectors (Canberra Coaxial Planar configuration) for total 210Pb (46.5 keV), 214Pb (295 keV and 351 keV), and 214Bi (609 keV) activities. The mean activity of the 214Pb (295 keV), 214Pb (351 keV), and 214Bi (609 keV) was used as a …

Sediment Texture And Composition Of Sediment Cores Collected During R/V Weatherbird Ii Cruises In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico From 2010-11-18 To 2016-09-09, Gregg R. Brooks, Rebekka A. Larson Nov 2018

Sediment Texture And Composition Of Sediment Cores Collected During R/V Weatherbird Ii Cruises In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico From 2010-11-18 To 2016-09-09, Gregg R. Brooks, Rebekka A. Larson

C-IMAGE data

Sediment texture and composition data were generated for selected core sub-samples at 2mm sampling intervals for “surficial unit” and 5mm sampling resolution intervals to base of cores. Sediment texture values are expressed as % Gravel, % Sand, % Silt and % Clay as calculated by dry weight (g). % Mud can be calculated by combining % Silt and % Clay. Sediment composition is expressed as % carbonate content measured by acid leaching. This dataset supports the publication: Larson, R. A., Brooks, G. R., Schwing, P. T., Holmes, C. W., Carter, S. R., & Hollander, D. J. (2018). High-resolution investigation of …

C-IMAGE data

Short-lived Radioisotope (SLRad) data were generated for selected core sub-samples at 2mm sampling intervals for “surficial unit” and 5mm sampling resolution intervals to base of cores. SLRad data generated include sample activity as disintegrations per minute per gram (dpm/g) of: 1) Excess 234Th (234Thxs) activity, which is calculated by measuring the total 234Th (234ThTot) activity and the subtraction of the measured or estimated “Supported” 234Th (234ThSup) activity, 2) Excess 210Pb (210Pbxs) activity, which is calculated by measuring the total 210Pb (210PbTot) activity and subtraction of the measured background 210Pb (210PbSup) activity (average of 214Pb at 295keV, 214Pb at 351keV, and …
