The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the morphologic changes that occur in cellular cementum exposed to periapical inflammation.

Ten single rooted human teeth were collected. There were five specimens of normal cellular cementum and five specimens of diseased cellular cementum, which had been exposed to periapical inflammation. Each specimen was fractured longitudinally through the apical foramen, leaving the organic component intact. The cross-sectional morphology of cellular cementum was then examined using an ARM Model 1000 scanning electron microscope. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry was also conducted on samples representative of the two test groups.

Preparations used in this study were obtained from an investigation which had undertaken the following:

Durapatite, a hydroxylapatite ceramic was implanted in 24 mature Beagle dogs to study its maintenance effect on the alveolar bone of the mandible.

After dividing the dogs into two groups, a fresh socket and a healed socket group, the posterior teeth were removed and alveolectomies were performed. Eight ceramic implants were then placed in the right mandible of each animal in each group. The healed group received the implants five weeks after tooth removal and the fresh socket group received implants immediately after extraction.

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

The healing potential of an endodontic lesion is usually greater than a periodontic lesion (Simon et al. 1972; Hiatt 1977). Periodontal regeneration places particular emphasis on the soft tissue-tooth interface (Stahl 1977). This interface was examined in fifteen extracted human teeth.

The teeth were divided into three groups: (1) periapical lesions, (2) periodontal lesions, and (3) healthy periodontal tissue. Criteria were established for each group. Human Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2)-transformed Balb/c mouse cells (H238 cells) are malignant in Balb/c mice. The immune stratus of mice bearing H238 cell-induced tumors was studied and changes in immune response with time and with altered diet of the mice were measured.

In the experiments dealing with the status of immunity with time after tumor cell injection, mice were fed Purina Laboratory Chow (P.L.C.), injected with H238 cells, and sacrificed three to eight weeks post-injection. A comparison was made of ultrasonic filing versus hand filing using three solutions to flood the canals of 24 extracted human maxillary central incisors. A modified PR-30 Cavitron insert was used in a Cavitron 1010 unit for the ultrasonic filing. The clinical crown was removed with a diamond saw and water spray at the cemento-enamel junction. The two major groups were ultrasonic filing versus hand filing; the three subgroups were solution/solvents - 10% EDTA, 2.0% NaOCl, and distilled water.

This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)₂ to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. Two series of experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of diet on neutrophilic phagocytosis. The first series was designed to determine the effects of varying amounts of oral glucose on phagocytosis. Blood samples from 6 to 8 subjects were drawn at fasting, and at various time periods following ingestion of 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100 grams of glucose. This study compared endodontic overfills of N₂ and gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer from a histopathological basis. The study employed four male rhesus monkeys and a sample of 31 teeth.

The most obvious difference between the samples filled with N₂ and the gutta percha-Grossman's Sealer samples was the recurring presence of ankylosis in the N₂-treated teeth. Results also included bone necrosis, inflammation and root and bone resorption.

The N₂ samples were considered to have evidenced greater violence of reaction apically.

It is a well established fact that there is a fluid transport system through the dentin, however to the present time very little has been done regarding this system in teeth that have been endodontically treated.

The present work was conducted in vivo using the lower incisors of rats as the medium for the study.

A selected number of Sprague Dawley rats (36 animals), whose average age was 60 days, and whose body weight averaged about 180 grams, were given an anesthetic of Sodium Pentabarbitol, .05 to .07 ml. per 100 grams body weight. This anesthetic was injected intraperitoneally.

Effect Of Post-Operative Use Of Chlorhexidine On Regeneration Of Bifurcation Defects In Dogs, Gary Bogle

The daily post-operative use of topical chlorhexidine application has been compared to daily toothbrushing. Periodontal defects were experimentally created in the bifurcations of lower premolars in dogs. The defects were treated by surgical debridement. Chlorhexidine application and toothbrushing were performed post-operatively for six weeks on contralateral pairs of teeth. The amounts of connective tissue and bone regeneration were evaluated from microscopic sections of the bifurcation areas. No difference between chlorhexidine and tooth brushing was found for the connective tissue attachment. However, significantly more bone had regenerated in the chlorhexidine treated areas than the tooth brushed area.

The effect of diet and dietary additives on voluntary alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. Alcohol intake measured weekly and reported as ml of a 10% solution ingested per 100 grams body weight. A four week pre-experimental period was designed to determine individual tendencies to drink and thus to eliminate the high and low drinkers from the study. No difference was found in alcohol intake with either starch or sugar as the carbohydrate source; however, there was a greater weight gain ( p < .025) in those animals consuming sugar-based diets. Rats on poor-quality diets containing minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals continued to gradually increase alcohol consumption during the study. This diet, supplemented with coffee, caused the greatest significant increase in alcohol intake and the lowest weight gains. Addition of coffee to the diets significantly increased alcohol consumption (p< .005) but decreased growth rate (p < .0005) . However, when the poor quality diets were supplemented with vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption was reduced by about 50% (p < .005) and weight gain was significantly increased (p < .0005).

The daily intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate significantly decreased alcohol intake (p < .02) and the per cent of total fluid consumed as alcohol (p < .02) but did not effect water consumption.

Infective oncospheres of Oochorlstica osheroffi and Oochoristica scelopori were compared using fifteen histochemical tests. Vital stains were also used.

Carnoy’s-fixed gravid proglottids were vacuum-embedded in a paraffin-piccolyte mixture and cut transversely at 6 microns. Sections were tested for the presence of phosphatases, proteins, sclerotin precursors, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and acid mucopolysaccharides.

Oncospheres were histochemlcally very similar. Heavy concentrations of mucoproteins and glycoproteins were detected in the oncospheral coat of O. scelopori. This study examined the fluid movement in dentin associated with the exposure of the root surface for varying periods of time ranging from 75 minutes to 30 days. Eight kittens received experimental defects on the roots of the canines. Just prior to sacrifice a fluorescing dye was injected intraperitoneally to make the fluid within the dentin visible under ultraviolet light. Frozen ground sections were prepared and examined. In order to determine the duration of the effect of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, starch, and orange juice on neutrophilic phagocytosis, 10 subjects underwent a complete series of carbohydrate tolerance tests. Blood samples were drawn at specific time periods following ingestion of 100 grams of each carbohydrate. An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

These lesions are always intraosseous and often become quiescent after the acute phases are over, forming a space which primarily consists of chronic inflammatory tissue. Two group A phages, P9c/2 and P4/2, were studied. Their density, sedimentation velocity, and biochemical properties were compared. Their densities were determined by density gradient centrifugation in 38.3% cesium chloride. Sedimentation velocity was used to determine their molecular weights. To accomplish this, the DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was labeled with tritium and T₂ DNA, labeled with ³²P, was used as a standard. Utilizing an extra-oral approach and sterile technique, left mandibular ostectomy was performed on five miniature pigs. The segment removed was 3 cm long and included the inferior border, mandibular canal and, in some cases, apices of a molar tooth.

Bone and plaster grafts (one solid and one canalized of each) were used to fill these defects. The fifth was left with no graft.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cranial and facial bone growth in the puberal Macaca mulatta monkey over a six month period utilizing the methods of metallic implantation combined with serial cephalometric roentgenography and a bichromatic vital staining method.
