Linking Spinal Cord Circuits With Upper Limb Sensorimotor Control In Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Saihari Dukkipati
Linking Spinal Cord Circuits With Upper Limb Sensorimotor Control In Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Saihari Dukkipati
Theses & Dissertations
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common neurological disorder originating in childhood, but most of the people living with CP are currently adults. While people with CP continue to get older, the amount of research focused on adults has been rather limited. The early childhood insults leading to CP are thought to originate in the brain, but the effects on the entire neuromuscular system across the lifespan have only recently started to be explored. Of note, recent neuroimaging evidence suggests that the cervical spinal cord structure is atypical in adults with CP. However, it is largely unclear how the neurophysiological …
Effects Of Rock Steady Boxing On Parkinsons Patients, Hannah Hall, Jennifer Walker, Erika Smith-Goodwin
Effects Of Rock Steady Boxing On Parkinsons Patients, Hannah Hall, Jennifer Walker, Erika Smith-Goodwin
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
OBJECTIVE
Rock Steady Boxing’s (non-profit organization) program goal is improving Parkinson’s patients’ quality of life through a non-contact, boxing-based fitness class. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Parkinson’s patients perceived improvement on proprioception from one hospital-based Rock Steady Boxing Program. The program was led by athletic trainers and physical therapists.
MAIN.OUTCOME.MEASURE
Likert scale survey was used with one fill in the blank question.
Submaximal Force Steadiness And Accuracy In Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability, Hyunwook Lee, S. Jun Son, Hyunsoo Kim, Seunguk Han, Matthew Seeley, J. Ty Hopkins
Submaximal Force Steadiness And Accuracy In Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability, Hyunwook Lee, S. Jun Son, Hyunsoo Kim, Seunguk Han, Matthew Seeley, J. Ty Hopkins
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Context: Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) have demonstrated sensorimotor impairments. Submaximal force steadiness and accuracy measure sensory, motor, and visual function via a feedback mechanism, which helps researchers and clinicians comprehend the sensorimotor deficits associated with CAI. Objective: To determine if participants with CAI experienced deficits in hip and ankle submaximal force steadiness and accuracy compared with healthy control participants. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Research laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Twenty-one patients with CAI and 21 uninjured individuals. Main Outcome Measure(s): Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and force steadiness and accuracy (10% and 30% of MVIC) of the ankle …
Effect Of Ankle Taping On Dynamic Balance And Perception Of Stability, William S. Gear, Megan J. Lundstrom
Effect Of Ankle Taping On Dynamic Balance And Perception Of Stability, William S. Gear, Megan J. Lundstrom
Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the actual and perceived effect of taping on dynamic stability. Methods: 21 physically active subjects [12 females (age = 20.33 ± 1.44 years, height = 165 ± 0.05 cm, mass = 68.76 ± 12.69 kg), and 9 males (age = 21.33 ± 1.66 years, height = 180 ± 0.10 cm, mass = 86.54 ± 9.46 kg)] participated in this study. Dynamic stability and perception of stability were assessed barefoot and with the ankle taped. The taped ankle condition used a standard preventive tape application including two anchors, three stirrups, close …
The Immediate Influence Of Whole Body Vibration On Proprioceptive Precision, Sean Madill
The Immediate Influence Of Whole Body Vibration On Proprioceptive Precision, Sean Madill
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
As our bodies are exposed to whole-body vibration inertial and strain sensitive sensory receptors throughout our body are activated. The information relayed from these receptors to the central nervous system and brain is used to analyze our environment and coordinate movement. The aim of this study was to investigate whether extended duration whole-body vibration influences sensory adaptation and coordinated movement, specifically our joint position acuity immediately following vibration exposure. Twenty-five adults completed a between ankle joint matching task before and immediately following a 20-minute whole-body vibration session and a control session of 20 minutes of standing near, but not on …
The Influence Of Joint-Site, Limb Preference, And Physical Activity On Joint Position Sense, Amanda N. Forsyth
The Influence Of Joint-Site, Limb Preference, And Physical Activity On Joint Position Sense, Amanda N. Forsyth
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Joint position sense provides the body with information about where limb segments are relative to one another in three-dimensional space. The ability to utilize this sense is imperative for smooth, coordinated, and accurate movement in everything from activities of daily living to competitive sport (Ghez & Sainburg, 1995). Researchers currently use joint position sense as a measure of proprioceptive acuity. However, limited research has investigated the influence of potential confounding factors on proprioception. Specifically, literature on how joint-site specificity and lateral preference influence proprioception displays several incongruent findings. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was (1) to determine if …
The Effects Of A Low Back Pain Vibration Modality On Trunk Postural Control, Adam R. Cornwall
The Effects Of A Low Back Pain Vibration Modality On Trunk Postural Control, Adam R. Cornwall
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Abstract
Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is prevalent worldwide and is affecting even more individuals as the population ages. There has recently been an increase in production of low back pain (LBP) vibration modality belts that apply localized vibration to the lumbar region of the spine as it has shown to reduce pain. However, vibration is also known to perturb muscle spindles and thus interfere with proprioception. If a LBP vibration modality causes a proprioceptive deficit in the trunk lumbar region it could potentially increase an individual’s risk of injury due to poor postural control. Therefore, the effects of a …
