Effects Of Added Vestibular Noise On Blindfolded Locomotor Veering, Russell J. Carmichael, Allison Sam, Philip K. Schot Phd Jan 2025

Effects Of Added Vestibular Noise On Blindfolded Locomotor Veering, Russell J. Carmichael, Allison Sam, Philip K. Schot Phd

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

BACKGROUND: Nearly every fundamentally healthy human, regardless of fitness, age, or gender is incapable of walking in a perfectly straight line when visual information is removed. This is known as veering. Many different potential causes have been examined, but the most persuasive explanation is that without visual input, sensory interference (or noise) accumulates and causes random motor output errors. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine veering behavior during blindfolded walking when added vestibular noise (vibration) was applied to the skull at select locations. METHODS: A handheld massager attached at the top of the head or over one …

The Temporal And Directional Dependencies Of Sway During 10 Seconds Of Single Leg Stance In Young, Healthy College Students, David Vanderheyden May 2015

The Temporal And Directional Dependencies Of Sway During 10 Seconds Of Single Leg Stance In Young, Healthy College Students, David Vanderheyden

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Background: Single Leg Stance (SLS) testing is used in clinical assessments of balance, but little is known about the temporal structure of sway parameters during this test. SLS research is equivocal on the effects of sway over time and the direction of balance initiation. Sway data in a healthy young population may provide insight on how balance is initiated and maintained in relation to the initial step direction. This may lead to novel approaches to help healthy elderly populations decrease fall risk and fall-related mortality. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the temporal and directional dependencies of …

The Behavior Of Chicks On The Visual Cliff Aged 1-20 Minutes And 80-100 Minutes, Denny Sam Mehner Aug 1966

The Behavior Of Chicks On The Visual Cliff Aged 1-20 Minutes And 80-100 Minutes, Denny Sam Mehner

All Master's Theses

The specific problem of the present experiment was to investigate the relationship between the discrimination of visual depth perception and the time of locomotion.
