Monitoring Different Types Of Resistance Training Using Session Rating Of Perceived Exertion, Favil Singh
Monitoring Different Types Of Resistance Training Using Session Rating Of Perceived Exertion, Favil Singh
Theses : Honours
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using the session rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale to measure physical effort during different types of resistance training exercises and to examine the validity of this scale in rating the entire resistance training sessions of different workouts and intensities. Fifteen male subjects (26.7 ± 4.3 years) performed three different types of resistance training protocols. All protocols consisted of the same five exercises (bench press, back squat, bench pull, shoulder press, and leg extension) but the intensities, rest periods, and numbers of repetitions were different. The strength protocol consisted …

Imbedding New Technologies Into Current Practice: A Guide For Administrators Of Physical Education, Thomas J. Haeck
Imbedding New Technologies Into Current Practice: A Guide For Administrators Of Physical Education, Thomas J. Haeck
All Graduate Projects
Many new technologies are available to the Physical Education teacher, yet few are commonly used. This project contains findings from a review of literature regarding Physical Education technology use in today's schools. The guidelines presented in this project were designed to facilitate the integration of Physical Education technology into the schools curriculum. The project was designed with the fundamentals of the constructivist classroom in mind, as well as including all students in the process. Students from historically marginalized groups, low socio-economic status, high and low achieving students, students with physical exceptionalities and special education students were all included in this …

Persistent Sympathetic Activation During Chronic Antihypertensive Therapy, Qi Fu, Rong Zhang, Sarah Witkowski, Armin Arbab-Zadeh, Anand Prasad, Kazunobu Okazaki, Benjamin D. Levine
Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
Previous studies have demonstrated that antihypertensive treatment resets baroreflex control of heart rate (HR) and increases cardiac vagal baroreflex sensitivity. However, it is uncertain whether baroreflex control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) also resets after treatment. We tested the hypothesis that chronic antihypertensive therapy alters baroreflex regulation of MSNA in patients with untreated moderate hypertension. Seven newly diagnosed patients with systolic blood pressure (BP) of 159 5 mm Hg (mean SE) and diastolic BP of 103 4 mm Hg were studied before and after 1 to 2 weeks ´ and 3 months (chronic) of antihypertensive treatment with losartan– hydrochlorothiazide …
Is The Ability To Regenerate Damaged Skeletal Muscle Genetically Determined? : Can Allelic Variation In The Gene, Pax7, Explain Observed Differences In Recovery Of Force Following Damage By Eccentric Exercise?, Zoran Groznica
Theses : Honours
High force eccentric muscle actions, during forcibly lengthening contracting muscle, have been found to produce pronounced muscle damage, especially if exercise is unaccustomed. A cascade of events is initiated in order to repair damaged skeletal muscle tissue including degeneration and regeneration processes. For the duration of muscle regeneration, satellite cells are the primary source of new myoblasts in adult muscle. This process requires activation of quiescent mononucleated satellite cells which proliferate, differentiate and fuse together to form fully functional muscle fibres. The satellite cells are specified by the gene, Pax7, during development. Experimental studies of Pax7 null mice that lack …

Effects Of Partial Immobilization After Eccentric Exercise On Recovery From Muscle Damage, Zainal Zainuddin, Peter Hope, Michael Newton, Paul Sacco, Kazunori Nosaka

Context: Short-term strict immobilization of the arm using a cast enhances recovery of muscle function after eccentric exercise. Objective: To determine if placing one arm in a sling (‘‘light’’ immobilization) for 4 days after eccentric exercise of the elbow flexor muscles would reduce muscle soreness and enhance recovery compared with the exercised but not immobilized contralateral arm. Design: Subjects performed 10 sets of 6 maximal isokinetic (90·s 1) eccentric actions of the elbow flexors of each arm ona Cybex dynamometer, separated by 2 weeks. Setting: University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Ten healthy subjects (5 menand 5 women) with no …
