Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue Thickness Changes Cooling Time During Cryotherapy, Jeffrey W. Otte
Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue Thickness Changes Cooling Time During Cryotherapy, Jeffrey W. Otte
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Context: Cryotherapy is often applied using a standard treatment time. Use of a standard treatment time fails to consider the insulating effect subculaneous adipose tissue has during cooling of underlying muscle. If differences in adipose lissuc thickness alter I he effects of cryotherapy, then a standard application time may not produce a slamlard clTcct for all patients. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of subcutaneous adipose tissue on cooling time during cryothcrapy. Design: A 1 x 4 factorial design was used in this study. The independent variable was skin-fold thickness, 0-10mm, 1 l-20mm, 2 l-30mm, …

Calcium β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation has been reported to reduce catabolism and promote gains in strength and fat free mass in untrained individuals initiating training. However, the effects of HMB supplementation on strength and body composition alterations during training in athletes is less clear. This study examined the effects of 28-d of calcium HMB supplementation during intense training on markers of catabolism, body composition, strength, and sprint performance. In a double-blind and randomized manner, 28 NCAA division I-A football players were matched-paired and assigned to supplement their diet for 28-d during winter resistance/agility training (~8 hr/wk) with a carbohydrate placebo …
A New Submaximal Bicycle Protocol For The Estimation Of Vo₂Max, Anna R. Bennett
A New Submaximal Bicycle Protocol For The Estimation Of Vo₂Max, Anna R. Bennett
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Simple, valid, and accurate means for estimating aerobic capacity from submaximal cycle ergometry are needed for use with the general public. Current popular methods such as the ACSM cycle ergometer protocol have been shown to overestimate maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) by as much as 26%. In the current study, VO2max was estimated using a new protocol based on a single 6-min stage designed to elicit 70% HRR. The data was also used to estimate VO2max by the Astrand method for comparison. Forty-nine healthy males and females, aged 18-44 yr (X = 26 ± …
The Difference In Pain Tolerance Between Ncaa Division 1-A Male And Female Athletes, Mollie K. Karabatsos
The Difference In Pain Tolerance Between Ncaa Division 1-A Male And Female Athletes, Mollie K. Karabatsos
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
How well an athlete tolerates pain may aid the athletic trainer in determining a proper rehabilitation protocol for the quickest recovery and return to play after an injury. The present investigation was conducted to determine if there is a difference in pain tolerance between NCAA Division I-A male and female athletes. The subjects consisted of nineteen healthy Division I-A male athletes and nineteen healthy Division I-A female athletes all between the ages of 18 and 23 (N=38). The subjects placed their hand, up to their styloid process, into a one - degree Celsius ice bath for one minute. After one …

The Effect Of Two States Of Hydration On Muscular Endurance In Men, Melissa L. Petrucci
The Effect Of Two States Of Hydration On Muscular Endurance In Men, Melissa L. Petrucci
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two states of hydration has an effect on muscular endurance in men. Two groups of four men randomly assigned to each group participated in both states of hydration. Both groups were tested at baseline for height, weight, intra- and extra-cellular water, total body water, and a one-repetition maximum strength test. Subjects were then tested after a 24 hour period of water deprivation, and after a 24 hour period of normal water intake (8 ten oz glasses of water). A urine specific gravity test, intra- and extra-cellular water, total body …
Does Creatine Supplementation Increase Muscle Strength In Women?, Tricia Cross
Does Creatine Supplementation Increase Muscle Strength In Women?, Tricia Cross
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to see if creatine supplementation increased muscular strength in women. Ten females were assigned to either a creatine (CG) or a placebo (PG) group with five subjects in each. The study lasted five weeks with one week of pre-testing, three weeks of creatine use which included one week of loading (12-13 g/day for seven days) and two weeks of maintenance (3-4 g/day for 14 days), and one week of post testing. Pre- and post-test strength were measured with a one repetition maximal lift (1RM) on the bench press and the leg press. All subjects …

A doubly labelled tracer molecule of glucose, [6,6-2HJglucose, has been used to measure the rate of glucose appearance in blood due to endogenous glucose production (by the liver and kidneysj.l,2 Considered 'non-recirculating', this tracer generally provides a realistic estimate of glucose kinetics.2,3 Used as a dual tracer in conjunction with [l-13C]glucose, the extent of glucose recycling can be quantitated.2-4 but the extent of possible recirculation of a single deuterium atom on newly formed glucose must then be considered.

(First paragraph) One hundred years ago, our forebears consumed more calories than we do today, yet they were leaner. Labor-saving devices were a rarity, and so in everyday life most people worked very hard physically. Obesity was present, of course, but afflicted only a small fraction of the population. We are not as fortunate today.
