Following a comprehensive review, the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) has developed an official position on the role of dietary antioxidants in exercise and sport. Antioxidants play a complex, context-dependent role in vivo; they can facilitate recovery from exercise but may also hinder training adaptations when consumed at supraphysiological doses. While endogenous antioxidant systems can effectively maintain redox balance, dietary sources, particularly whole foods, can help mitigate excessive oxidative stress following intense/heavy training or inadequate recovery. The influence of dietary antioxidants depend on timing, dosage, type, and individual factors. The ISSN’s official position encompasses the following: (1) Redox balance …

Adequate dietary protein is important for many aspects of health with current evidence suggesting that exercising individuals need greater amounts of protein. When assessing protein quality, animal sources of protein routinely rank amongst the highest in quality, largely due to the higher levels of essential amino acids they possess in addition to exhibiting more favorable levels of digestibility and absorption patterns of the amino acids. In recent years, the inclusion of plant protein sources in the diet has grown and evidence continues to accumulate on the comparison of various plant protein sources and animal protein sources in their ability to …

Creatine For Exercise And Sports Performance, With Recovery Considerations For Healthy Populations, Benjamin Wax, Chad M. Kerksick, Andrew R. Jagim, Jerry J. Mayo, Brian C. Lyons, Richard B. Kreider

Faculty Scholarship

Creatine is one of the most studied and popular ergogenic aids for athletes and recreational weightlifters seeking to improve sport and exercise performance, augment exercise training adaptations, and mitigate recovery time. Studies consistently reveal that creatine supplementation exerts positive ergogenic effects on single and multiple bouts of short-duration, high-intensity exercise activities, in addition to potentiating exercise training adaptations. In this respect, supplementation consistently demonstrates the ability to enlarge the pool of intracellular creatine, leading to an amplification of the cell’s ability to resynthesize adenosine triphosphate. This intracellular expansion is associated with several performance outcomes, including increases in maximal strength (low-speed …

The Basics Of Training For Muscle Size And Strength: A Brief Review On The Theory, Samuel L. Buckner, Matthew B. Jessee, Grant J. Mouser, Scott J. Dankel, Kevin T. Mattocks, Zachary W. Bell, Takashi Abe, Jeremy P. Loenneke Mar 2020

The Basics Of Training For Muscle Size And Strength: A Brief Review On The Theory, Samuel L. Buckner, Matthew B. Jessee, Grant J. Mouser, Scott J. Dankel, Kevin T. Mattocks, Zachary W. Bell, Takashi Abe, Jeremy P. Loenneke

Faculty Scholarship

The periodization of resistance exercise is often touted as the most effective strategy for optimizing muscle size and strength adaptations. This narrative persists despite a lack of experimental evidence to demonstrate its superiority. In addition, the general adaptation syndrome, which provides the theoretical framework underlying periodization, does not appear to provide a strong physiological rationale that periodization is necessary. Hans Selye conducted a series of rodent studies which used toxic stressors to facilitate the development of the general adaptation syndrome. To our knowledge, normal exercise in humans has never been shown to produce a general adaptation syndrome. We question whether …

Kinematic Differences Between The Front And Back Squat And Conventional And Sumo Deadlift, Jovana Kasovic, Benjamin Martin, Christopher A. Fahs

Student Scholarship

Differences between the front and back squat and conventional and sumo deadlift. J Strength Cond Res 33(12): 3213–3219, 2019—The average concentric velocity (ACV) of a resistance exercise movement is inversely related to the load lifted. Previous work suggests that different resistance exercises differ in ACV at the same relative load. Currently, there is limited evidence to determine whether the style of exercise (e.g., front or back squat [BS]; sumo-style or conventional-style deadlift) also affects the load-velocity profile or other kinematic variables such as the peak concentric velocity (PCV) and linear displacement (LD). The purpose of this study was to compare …

Factors Related To Average Concentric Velocity Of Four Barbell Exercises At Various Loads, Christopher A. Fahs, Julia C. Blumkaitis, Lindy M. Rossow

Faculty Scholarship

The resistance exercise load is the primarily determinant of the average concentric velocity (ACV) during a repetition. It is unknown whether individual factors such as training experience or anthropometrics also influence the ACV. Previous research has shown the ACV during the 1 repetition maximum (1RM) varies between exercises, but it is not clear whether ACV is different between exercises at various percentages of the 1RM. This information could provide practical guidelines for trainees using ACV to select training loads. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether training age, current training frequency, limb length, height, and relative strength …
