Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Teachers’ beliefs about epistemology – that is, their personal broad mental representations about the nature of reality, knowledge, and how people know and learn – have been associated with the many educational outcomes both in the classroom and in physical education. Little is known about whether these beliefs predict physical educators’ value (i.e., interest, importance, like, and usefulness) and self-efficacy (i.e., confidence in performing) for using constructivist teaching models such as sport education and teaching games for understanding. As a result, this study examined path associations from beliefs about epistemology (epistemic worldviews and epistemological beliefs) to value and self-efficacy for …
Effects Of A Mental Skills Training Program On Performance In Distance Runners, Neil Patrick Bangs
Effects Of A Mental Skills Training Program On Performance In Distance Runners, Neil Patrick Bangs
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Anxiety affects nearly 20% of the United States population and can have a significant impact on athletic performance. However, athletes can mitigate the effects of performance anxiety through the use of mental skills and mindfulness training. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine if a mental training and mindfulness intervention could reduce anxiety and enhance performance in distance runners. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of the study was that athletes would experience less anxiety, increased levels of mindfulness, and improved performance following a four-workshop intervention. Methods: Distance runners engaged in a mental skills and mindfulness training program where we …
Analyzing Change-Of-Direction And The Laterally Resisted Split Squat: Incorporating A Lateral Vector Into The Single Leg Squat, Derek Maddy
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Improving change of direction (COD) with the use of strength training has led to mixed results. To date, the modified single leg squat (MSLS) and the bilateral squat (BS) have been successfully used to improve COD, with equal improvement. COD is primarily performed at a 45-75° frontal plane angle; however, the MSLS and BS are performed at a 90° frontal plane angle. Based on the force vector theory, it is proposed that a more mechanically similar strength training exercise, the Laterally Resisted Split Squat (LRSS), be used. The purpose of this study is to compare COD with the LRSS, MSLS, …
Validity Of The Polar M430 Among Females Of Varying Fitness Levels, Body Fat Percentage, And Reported Physical Activity, Kevin Earl Miller
Validity Of The Polar M430 Among Females Of Varying Fitness Levels, Body Fat Percentage, And Reported Physical Activity, Kevin Earl Miller
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The Polar M430 is a heart rate monitor that uses a non-exercise prediction method to predict one’s V̇O2max. Research has revealed that this method will overestimate predicted V̇O2max among females. Studies have investigated the validity of this method, however, these studies have not taken into account how physical activity (PA) levels, body fat percentage, or measured V̇O2max could affect the prediction value. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the Polar M430 in predicting V̇O2max amongst females of varying PA levels, body fat percentages, and fitness levels. Methods: Forty-eight …
Acute Effects Of The Training Mask On Short-Term Recovery During Rowing Intervals, Hayden W. Hess
Acute Effects Of The Training Mask On Short-Term Recovery During Rowing Intervals, Hayden W. Hess
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of the Training Mask 2.0 (TM) on performance (m), blood lactate, heart rate recovery (HRR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (Q̇), heart rate variability (HRV), and breath rate recovery (BRR) when used during short-term recovery. Methods: Seven trained males completed two interval training conditions (TM and Sham TM). Each condition consisted of five, 1-min, max effort rows with 3-min recoveries. The TM (or Sham TM) was worn during each 3-min recovery. A repeated measures 2x5 (condition x interval) ANOVA was used to determine significant main effects for condition or …
Improving Power Output In Older Adults Utilizing Plyometrics In An Alterg Treadmill, Tyler Dobbs
Improving Power Output In Older Adults Utilizing Plyometrics In An Alterg Treadmill, Tyler Dobbs
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare functional strength and power output in older adults who completed plyometric training in an AlterG treadmill compared to older adults who completed traditional resistance training. Methods: Twenty-three older adults were randomized to a strength (SG), plyometric (PG), or control group (CG). SG and PG exercised 3x/week for 8 weeks while CG performed no exercise. Measures of a timed sit-to-stand, stair climb, estimated maximal muscular strength, and isokinetic power were taken at pre and post testing. A repeated measures 2x3 (time x group) ANOVA was used to determine if there was a significant …
Physiologic Responses Of Firefighting Training Officers In The Structured Live-Fire Firefighting Training, Takahisa Koide
Physiologic Responses Of Firefighting Training Officers In The Structured Live-Fire Firefighting Training, Takahisa Koide
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Firefighting is one of the most strenuous and dangerous occupations in the community. Training Officers are senior firefighters who take on the preparation and education of their fellow firefighters. One of the Training Officers’ tasks is structured live-fire training. During live-fire training, they are exposed to the stress of fire and high heat multiple times per day. In spite of this issue, there is no research focusing on Training Officers during the live-fire training evolution. Purpose: The present study was a pilot study to measure the stress experienced in the live-fire training and possibly reduce this stress by managing …
Effect Of Weight Loss Training Protocol Using Two Different Treadmills For Obese Individuals, Kristi Lynn Bercier
Effect Of Weight Loss Training Protocol Using Two Different Treadmills For Obese Individuals, Kristi Lynn Bercier
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill allows individuals to walk at reduced body weight by using lower body positive pressure (LBPP). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to discern if the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill was an effective tool to use in a weight loss walking program with obese individuals when compared to walking on a traditional treadmill. METHODS: Fifteen male (n = 3) and female (n = 12) obese participants, aged 18-55 years old with an average body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg/m2), were randomly assigned to the AlterG treadmill (AlterG; n = 6) and traditional treadmill (TT; …
The Effects Of Different Warm-Up Strategies In Olympic Weightlifting, Joshua Redden
The Effects Of Different Warm-Up Strategies In Olympic Weightlifting, Joshua Redden
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This study investigated the effects of two types of warm up routines utilizing the clean pull movement on maximal ground reaction force and barbell velocity during the second pull phase of the full clean movement. Five male and female national caliber weightlifters randomly completed a control condition (C) or one of two treatment conditions (T1, T2) in a crossover design. The control condition served to establish baseline data against which the kinematic and kinetic parameters of the two treatment conditions were compared. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare means between conditions. No significant differences were found between C, …
