Kinematic Variations Between Successful And Unsuccessful Dynamic Rock Climbing Movements, Max R. Jarvis
Kinematic Variations Between Successful And Unsuccessful Dynamic Rock Climbing Movements, Max R. Jarvis
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Rock climbing as a sport and leisure activity has grown exponentially in popularity in recent years. Claims of best technique for rock climbing have been made in guide books, but are unsubstantiated. Specific upper body characteristics, determinants of climbing skill, and injury prevalence have been evaluated, but research examining climbing-specific movements has remained largely unexamined. The purpose of this study was to determine the angular kinematics and center of mass (COM) characteristics of the two-handed dynamic climbing maneuver (dyno). Participants received three attempts to complete a dyno on a 15° overhanging bouldering wall (EPIC Adventures) that were recorded via camcorder …
The Effect Of Backpack Load On Trunk Kinematics Of Imitated Pathological Gait: A Case Study, Kara Kracher
The Effect Of Backpack Load On Trunk Kinematics Of Imitated Pathological Gait: A Case Study, Kara Kracher
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Background: It is well documented that loaded backpacks affect the biomechanics of gait in both children and adults. Minimal information is available with regard to the effects of backpacks on the biomechanics of gait in individuals with clinical gait abnormalities, such as those seen in cerebral palsy. Healthy, non-clinical populations can be taught how to ‘imitate’ typical gait abnormalities in order to study various experimental interventions without enlisting clinical patients. The objective of this study was to determine the acute effect of backpack load on kinematics of the trunk during typical and imitated pathological gait. Methods: COVID 19 restrictions precluded …
Hip-Shoulder Separation In The Javelin Throw And Its Relationship With Level Of Experience, Samantha Baker
Hip-Shoulder Separation In The Javelin Throw And Its Relationship With Level Of Experience, Samantha Baker
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The javelin throw is a technically-demanding sport and is excellent example of how the kinetic chain works starting with the landing of the drive foot (right foot) causing a chain reaction traveling up the knee to the hip, through the trunk, to the shoulder, the elbow, and then the wrist. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between thrower experience and the timing and degree of hip-shoulder separation in the javelin throw. A six-camera, three-dimensional motion capture system was used to capture a 27 reflective marker model of the movement of the lower body (pelvis, legs, and …
The Effect Of Acute Fatigue On Reactive Strength Index In Modern Dancers, Jordan Tingman
The Effect Of Acute Fatigue On Reactive Strength Index In Modern Dancers, Jordan Tingman
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute fatigue on stretch shortening cycle (SSC) performance measured by the Reactive Strength Index (RSI) derived from a drop jump. Methods: Twelve professional modern dancers (8 female, 4 male) participated in this study. Two force plates were utilized to record the force-time data during drop jumps (DJ) before and after an acute, fatiguing protocol. Dancers performed a 5-10 minute self-selected warm up followed by 3-5 practice trials of DJs onto the force plates. Three trials were recorded from each dancer with 30-60 seconds (s) of rest between trials. …

Relationships Between Throwing Velocity And Selected Kinematics In Youth Baseball Players, Nick Hedgecock
Relationships Between Throwing Velocity And Selected Kinematics In Youth Baseball Players, Nick Hedgecock
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Research investigating baseball position players has been limited primarily to pitchers. The current study examined several kinematic variables and their relationship with ball velocity in middle and high school-aged baseball players using two-dimensional (2D) motion analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate these relationships using 2D motion analysis and compare these results to those reported in the literature using 3D analysis. Thirteen baseball players (15.31 ± 1.25 yrs., 72.29 ± 10.79 kg and 177.09 ± 5.59 cm tall) participated in the study. A video camera was used to record three throwing trials for each participant. Four reflective markers …
The Acute Effect Vibrating Foam Rollers Have On The Lower Extremities' Ability To Produce Power, Jared L. Klingenberg
The Acute Effect Vibrating Foam Rollers Have On The Lower Extremities' Ability To Produce Power, Jared L. Klingenberg
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that vibration through self-myofascial release in combination with a dynamic stretch routine had on maximum power output. Twenty-one collegiate volleyball athletes agreed to participate in the study. The design was a randomized cross-over design in which all participants served as their own control by participating in all three interventions, which consisted of; a) dynamic stretch routine (DS), b) non-vibrating foam rolling combined with dynamic stretch routine (NVFR), and c) vibrating foam rolling combined with dynamic stretch routine (VFR). The foam rolling protocol consisted of rolling each limb bilaterally for 30 …
The Relationship Between Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion And Knee Kinematics In A Land-And-Jump Task, Nate Brookreson
The Relationship Between Dorsiflexion Range Of Motion And Knee Kinematics In A Land-And-Jump Task, Nate Brookreson
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The study examined the relationship between weight-bearing and non weight-bearing dorsiflexion range of motion and frontal knee kinematics at initial ground contact and maximal knee flexion in a land-and-jump task. Thirteen male participants (age = 23 + 2.35 y, height = 181.4 + 5.68 cm, mass = 84.5 + 17.2 kg) proficient in landing and jumping techniques and free from lower limb injury participated in the study. Measurement of ankle range of motion was conducted utilizing non weight-bearing and weight-bearing positions prior to participating in the land-and jump task. During the jump, a 10-camera Vicon 3D Motion Analysis System captured …
