Performance Consistency In Various Motor Assessments Performed By Children With Development Coordination Disorder, Jennifer Chuang
Performance Consistency In Various Motor Assessments Performed By Children With Development Coordination Disorder, Jennifer Chuang
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have low motor skills that include marked delays in achieving motor milestones, poor balance, low coordination and handwriting difficulties. Because of the heterogeneous nature of this condition and its comorbidity with other disorders, it is difficult to develop a single profile of motor skill deficiencies in children with DCD and it remains unclear how a particular child with DCD may perform in an array of motor assessment batteries.
Effects Of Cooling And Heating Fans On Thermoregulation, David Cooley
Effects Of Cooling And Heating Fans On Thermoregulation, David Cooley
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
INTRODUCTION: The human body must maintain a constant internal environment for optimal operation of cellular activity. This homeostatic balance is maintained at rest but becomes more of a challenge during exercise. An important internal regulatory mechanism is thermoregulation. Thermoregulation is defined as the ability of an organism to maintain a core body temperature within certain boundaries, even when internal and external temperatures are altered. The hypothalamus is responsible for keeping the body’s core temperature within a normal range, around 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit, at rest and during exercise. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects …

The Effects Of Assault On A Graded Exercise Test, Bhavin Rana
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
INTRODUCTION: Maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂ max) is the maximal capacity of the body to transport oxygen while performing the Bruce Protocol, an incremental stress test. VO₂ max is the best indicator of an individual’s cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance because the more oxygen you can use during a high level exercise, the more ATP (energy) is being produced and is measured in milliliters of oxygen used per kilogram of body weight in one minute (ml/kg/min). PURPOSE: The purpose of this research study was to examine whether Assault, a vasodilator, will improve results on a Bruce Protocol Stress Test. METHODS: Eight …
The Relationship Between Gait Measures And Posturographical Measures In An Elderly Population, Drue Baker
The Relationship Between Gait Measures And Posturographical Measures In An Elderly Population, Drue Baker
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
1 in 3 older adults will experience a fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of accidental death in adults over 65 years, and are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. Most falls occur during locomotion, and impaired gait and postural control have many implications that affect stability during walking. Dynamic posturography has been shown to be a good measure of postural stability, while measures of gait have been linked to age-related changes as well as discriminating between fallers and non-fallers

The Supplement Beast Mode And Its Effect On Anaerobic Power, Isaac Majors
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Anaerobic metabolism is the production of energy in the absence of oxygen and anaerobic power can be measured as either mean or peak power output in exercise that lasts thirty seconds or less. Power is force times velocity and it is measured in Watts. Research has shown that caffeine has a positive effect on sports performance and today many athletes use it as an ergogenic aid. Caffeine’s affect on maximal anaerobic power however are less understood.
Relationship Between Total Sleep Duration And Body Composition, Heather Church
Relationship Between Total Sleep Duration And Body Composition, Heather Church
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
In the endless pursuit of possible causes for obesity and overweight, it has been hypothesized that sleep may have an effect on body composition. Some studies have shown that sleep deprivation is associated with a lower energy expenditure; however, other studies have shown that there is no correlation between body composition and sleep. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between body composition, specifically percent body fat (%BF), determined by hydrostatic weighing versus sleep quality, specifically sleep duration and efficiency. Seven kinesiology students from the University of Texas at Arlington participated in this study, in which body …
The Effect Of Dynamic Stretching On Exercise Performance, Nkechi Offor
The Effect Of Dynamic Stretching On Exercise Performance, Nkechi Offor
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Dynamic stretching uses speed of movement, momentum and active muscular effort to bring about a stretch. It is similar to ballistic stretching except that it avoids bouncing motions and tends to incorporate more sports-specific movements. Researches show that dynamic stretching tends to have more advantages as compared to static stretching (stretching muscles while the body is at rest). Studies show that static stretching techniques do little to increase flexibility or reduce injury when performed before a workout; they also show that static stretches tend to have a detrimental effect on explosive movements and strength output as compared to dynamic stretching.

Effects Of Extended Time Of Stretch On Anaerobic Exercise, Leon Ii Montgomery
Effects Of Extended Time Of Stretch On Anaerobic Exercise, Leon Ii Montgomery
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Stretching is commonly used to prepare the body for work and protect the exercising muscles from sudden exertion. Ballistic, dynamic, active, passive, static, isometric and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching are the various ways of stretching that hold certain values which are beneficial for the body yet still pose draw backs in the nature of the movements. Static and dynamic stretching are more commonly used in athletics since they still prepare the body for work yet “dynamic stretching performed prior to vertical jumps can result in improvements in performance” (Vanderka 2011). Static stretching has long been the mode of choice for …

The Effects Of Hand Osteoarthritis On Hand Grip Strength, Tiffany Parish
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Hand osteoarthritis (HOA) is one of the most common joint disorders in elderly people. Osteoarthritis is known as degenerative arthritis since it is a condition in which the cartilage wears out between joints causing the bones to rub directly against other bones. Along with causing pain, it can limit mobility and range of motion, making it difficult for a person to grasp or use small objects, such as keys or pens. Other functional consequences may include hand weakness and force deficit. Depending on the severity of HOA a person has, the mobility, pain, and level of joint stiffness varies.

The Effect Of Caffeine On Anaerobic Exercise, Nelson Gonzalez
The Effect Of Caffeine On Anaerobic Exercise, Nelson Gonzalez
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Caffeine is one of the most socially acceptable performance enhancement drugs used by athletes and is one of the most widely studied ergogenic aids by sports scientists. The effect caffeine has on exercise performance is well founded, generally eliciting a dampening of perceptual response during exercise allowing the athlete to perform at a higher level. However, in comparison to aerobic performance, less research has been conducted on the ergogenic potential on anaerobic performance. Most research has been conducted through the use of the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT), which determines anaerobic power. The WAnT requires the subject to pedal a cycle …
Correlation Between Body Fat Percentage And Maximal Exercise (Vo2max) In Collegiate Female Track Athletes, Jennifer Campos
Correlation Between Body Fat Percentage And Maximal Exercise (Vo2max) In Collegiate Female Track Athletes, Jennifer Campos
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
A VO2max test is used to determine the rate of utilization of oxygen which is a measure of cardiorespiratory endurance and aerobic fitness. A relative VO2max is expressed according to body weight in milliliters of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute. The amount of body fat we maintain is dependent on diet, exercise, and heredity. Body fat can be measured by several different methods. Hydrostatic weighing determines body fat percentage through the displacement of water and is considered the gold standard in most Exercise Science Programs.

Comparison Of Body Composition, Aerobic And Anaerobic Fitness In Competitive Level Soccer Players With Regards To Position Played, Samantha Maserang
Comparison Of Body Composition, Aerobic And Anaerobic Fitness In Competitive Level Soccer Players With Regards To Position Played, Samantha Maserang
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Body composition can be thought of in several different terms. Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage (%bf) are the two most popular. The BMI is determined from the height and weight only, but the body fat percentage takes the age and ethnicity into account along with the actual measurement to estimate %bf. Body composition and aerobic and anaerobic fitness among high school age female soccer players has not been studied very extensively. Some studies have been conducted to examine body composition, but did not compare the positions each subject played or include the fitness level.

Impact Forces Of Jump Landings Between Beginner And Elite Dancers, Tomeika Walker
Kinesiology Student Research - Archive
Unlike most athletic activities, dancers complete the vast majority of their training by concentrating solely on dance technique, with very little to no other forms of exercise. This limitation obviously increases probability of excelling in dance, however it can pose some obstacles in regards to the overall health and sustainability of the dancer, in particular to the joints. Jumping is an integral part of dance technique and as they advance in training, dancers are taught many forms of jumps, but may not be aware of the amount of force absorbed by the joints upon landing.

A decrease in intramuscular pH, caused by excessive H+ production, has been known to be one of the causes of muscular fatigue during maximal exercise. The hydrogen ions are a result of anaerobic metabolism that is used to provide the muscle cell with the ATP needed during strenuous bouts of exercise. There have been a number of studies done in the area of increasing the ability of the blood to buffer these hydrogen ions as they are released into blood with lactate. Sodium Bicarbonate, or baking powder, is a strong base that is being looked at as a potential supplement …

Power Balance advertises that its hologram bracelet improves exercise performance by harnessing the belief in the harmony of mind and body. There is no credible scientific evidence to support these claims. Previous research has shown that any increase in performance is due to the placebo effect. The mind-set of an individual is crucial in determining whether a placebo will cause a physiological response.

The description of carbohydrates as either simple or complex is an insufficient way of classifying them. A metabolically more informative way of describing carbohydrates is the degree to which they raise blood glucose concentrations and this is expressed in terms of glycemic index (GI). Carbohydrates which produce a large increase in blood glucose concentration, in response to a standard amount of carbohydrate (50g), are classified as having a high glycemic index. The metabolic response during exercise is different as a consequence of the glycemic indices of the carbohydrates consumed preceding the exercise, and so the choice of carbohydrate in pre-competition …
