Oversimplification Of The Relationship Between Ultrasound And Skinfold Measurements Of Subcutaneous Fat Thickness, Dale R. Wagner Sep 2021

Oversimplification Of The Relationship Between Ultrasound And Skinfold Measurements Of Subcutaneous Fat Thickness, Dale R. Wagner

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

In the March 2021 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, two separate studies (1,2) from different research laboratories both used ultrasound to estimate body fat percentage (%BF). Both Chandler et al. (1) and Tinsley et al. (2) reported using a modification of the Jackson–Pollock (3) seven-site skinfold formula to convert their ultrasound fat thicknesses into estimates of body density and subsequently converted body density to %BF with the Siri (4) formula. Close inspection of their methods reveals that the only “modification” to the Jackson–Pollock equation was a doubling of the ultrasound fat thicknesses. Tinsley et al. …

Temperature Changes Seen In Lower Extremities After Cpn Local Anesthetic Block, Lora Asberry Aug 2021

Temperature Changes Seen In Lower Extremities After Cpn Local Anesthetic Block, Lora Asberry

Symposium of Student Scholars

Many older patients often suffer from walking issues such as Drop Foot. Drop Foot is caused by the malfunction of nerves in the foot, resulting in the loss of control of the front foot muscle. Within all of our patients, there has been a common fibular palsy, caused by the entrapment of the peroneal nerve. Due to this, they cannot lift up their foot. Some cases are permanent, while others are temporary. In the temporary cases, we have indicated a Phoenix Sign. The Phoenix Sign indicates that a nerve, presumed to be dead, has the capability to be recessed back …

Fatigue-Induced Sex Differences For Explosive Neuromuscular Characteristics Of The Plantar Flexors, Ben Dalton Aug 2021

Fatigue-Induced Sex Differences For Explosive Neuromuscular Characteristics Of The Plantar Flexors, Ben Dalton

Symposium of Student Scholars

Previous research on fatigue using isometric contractions suggests that females are more fatigue resistant than males, but less is clear regarding fatigue induced by dynamic contractions. PURPOSE: To determine sex differences for explosive voluntary neuromuscular characteristics of the plantar flexors (PFs) during a dynamic fatiguing task. METHODS: Recreationally active males (n=14; 22.4±2.2 yrs) and females (n=15; 20.9±2.5 yrs) performed a fatiguing task of the PFs consisting of 60 maximal isotonic contractions at 30% of their maximal isometric strength using a dynamometer. Peak power (PP), optimal velocity (OV), and optimal torque (OT) were calculated from the first five contractions of the …

Cross-Frequency Coupling Explains The Preference For Simple Ratios In Rhythmic Behaviour And The Relative Stability Across Non-Synchronous Patterns, Dobromir Dotov, Laurel Trainor Aug 2021

Cross-Frequency Coupling Explains The Preference For Simple Ratios In Rhythmic Behaviour And The Relative Stability Across Non-Synchronous Patterns, Dobromir Dotov, Laurel Trainor

Journal Articles

Rhythms are important for understanding coordinated behaviours in ecological systems. The repetitive nature of rhythms affords prediction, planning of movements and coordination of processes within and between individuals. A major challenge is to understand complex forms of coordination when they differ from complete synchronization. By expressing phase as ratio of a cycle, we adapted levels of the Farey tree as a metric of complexity mapped to the range between in-phase and anti-phase synchronization. In a bimanual tapping task, this revealed an increase of variability with ratio complexity, a range of hidden and unstable yet measurable modes, and a rank-frequency scaling …

Effects Of Sensory Feedback And Collider Size On Reach-To-Grasp Coordination In Haptic-Free Virtual Reality, Mariusz P. Furmanek, Madhur Mangalam, Kyle Lockwood

Journal Articles

Technological advancements and increased access have prompted the adoption of head- mounted display based virtual reality (VR) for neuroscientific research, manual skill training, and neurological rehabilitation. Applications that focus on manual interaction within the virtual environment (VE), especially haptic-free VR, critically depend on virtual hand-object collision detection. Knowledge about how multisensory integration related to hand-object collisions affects perception-action dynamics and reach-to-grasp coordination is needed to enhance the immersiveness of interactive VR. Here, we explored whether and to what extent sensory substitution for haptic feedback of hand-object collision (visual, audio, or audiovisual) and collider size (size of spherical pointers representing the …

The Reel Deal: The Stacked Benefits Of A Reel Mower, John K. Hix, Simone Bailey Aug 2021

The Reel Deal: The Stacked Benefits Of A Reel Mower, John K. Hix, Simone Bailey

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

"Mow-lawning" is a colloquial term referred to actively cutting grass using a reel mower, typically at a faster than normal pace in order to maximize exercise benefit and minimize time, with the emphasis on the physical action of mowing and only secondarily on the resulting lawn care. While mow-lawning remains relatively uncommon in the United States, adoption of this practice by those healthy enough to engage in the level of exercise required can deliver a number of benefits that improve environmental, safety, and personal goals simultaneously. The stacking of so many benefits in one practice deserves more attention and promotion.

Movement Patterns During Functional Activities In People With Chronic Low Back Pain, Quenten Lowell Hooker Aug 2021

Movement Patterns During Functional Activities In People With Chronic Low Back Pain, Quenten Lowell Hooker

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

People with chronic LBP display an altered movement pattern where the lumbar spine moves more readily than other joints that can contribute to the activity. The pattern is of particular clinical relevance because across multiple studies the magnitude of altered pattern is associated with LBP and function. One session of motor skill training (MST) during functional activities can improve the altered pattern. However, of the few studies investigating MST for people with LBP, none have examined the short-term or long-term effects of MST on the altered pattern. Additionally, no study has systematically examined if person-specific characteristics moderate the altered pattern …

Shear Wave Propagation Speeds And Estimation Of Mechanical Properties In Soft, Fibrous, Nonlinear Anisotropic Materials, Zuoxian Hou Aug 2021

Shear Wave Propagation Speeds And Estimation Of Mechanical Properties In Soft, Fibrous, Nonlinear Anisotropic Materials, Zuoxian Hou

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

The mechanical properties of brain tissue may reflect or influence growth, remodeling, development, aging, and disease. However, brain tissue, especially white matter, is structurally anisotropic and has nonlinear strain-stress relationships, so common methods are not very useful to describe the mechanical properties of brain tissue. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), based on the MRI imaging technique, can be used for measuring tissue mechanical properties non-invasively. Therefore, the mathematical model that describes the relation between wave speed and tissue mechanical properties will essentially influence the accuracy of the prediction. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between shear wave …

Deception Of Resistance And The Effects On Muscular Fitness And Perceived Exertion, Tyler Mchenry Aug 2021

Deception Of Resistance And The Effects On Muscular Fitness And Perceived Exertion, Tyler Mchenry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Resistance training has been a popular tactic that individuals have used to increase muscular fitness for decades. Muscular fitness includes muscular endurance, strength, and power. However, limitations such as self-efficacy and the Central Governor Theory may influence individual maximal performance ability. One training tactic that has been rarely researched is the deception of resistance during exercise, which is assumed to increase performances in all aspects of muscular fitness and improvements in perceived effort. Inconsistent results have been concluded from previous studies that have examined the same topic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resistance …

Extension Research

Many diseases, disabilities, and mental health conditions associated with aging can be delayed or prevented through regular exercise. Several barriers to exercise, many of which are exacerbated in rural communities, prevent mid-life and older adults from accessing its benefits. However, recently, a racquet sport named pickleball has become popular among older adults, and it appears to overcome some of these barriers. We conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the impact of a six-week pickleball intervention on measures of muscle function, cognitive function, perceived pain, and cardio-metabolic risk, as well as several psychosocial factors contributing to adherence in sedentary rural participants. …

Sex Differences And Vascular Mechanisms Of Elevated Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Non-Hispanic Black Individuals, John David Akins Aug 2021

Sex Differences And Vascular Mechanisms Of Elevated Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Non-Hispanic Black Individuals, John David Akins

Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including hypertension, disproportionately affect the non-Hispanic black (BL) population in the United States. Despite being an inherently multifactorial process, altered vascular function remains a critical hallmark in the development of CVD. Further, blunted vascular function is often observed in the BL population. Recent advancements have linked several observational and mechanistic findings to the reduced vascular function in BL individuals, though the breadth of functional disparities in this population, the mechanistic contributors to these differences across sexes, and possible interventions to improve vascular function remain unelucidated. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to expand our current understanding of the vascular …

The embodied theory of tooling predicts that when using a grasped object as a tool, individuals accommodate their actions to manage the altered degrees of freedom in the body-plus-object system. We tested predictions from this theory by studying how 3 tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) and 6 humans (Homo sapiens) used a hoe to retrieve a token. The hoe’s handle was rigid, had 2 segments with 1 planar joint, or had 3 segments with 2 (orthogonal) planar joints. When jointed, rotating the handle could render it rigid. The monkeys used more actions to retrieve the token when the handle had …
