A Comparative Evaluation Of Gait Between Children With Autism And Typically Developing Matched Controls, Janet S. Dufek, Jeffrey D. Eggleston, John R. Harry, Robbin Hickman

Integrated Health Sciences Faculty Research

Anecdotal reports suggest children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ambulate differently than peers with typical development (TD). Little empirical evidence supports these reports. Children with ASD exhibit delayed motor skills, and it is important to determine whether or not motor movement deficits exist during walking. The purpose of the study was to perform a comprehensive lower-extremity gait analysis between children (aged 5–12 years) with ASD and age- and gender-matched-samples with TD. Gait parameters were normalized to 101 data points and the gait cycle was divided into seven sub-phases. The Model Statistic procedure was used to test for statistical significance between …

The Potential Role Of Aerobic Exercise-Induced Pentraxin 3 On Obesity-Related Inflammation And Metabolic Dysregulation, Aaron L. Slusher, Chun-Jung Huang, Edmund O. Acevedo

Kinesiology and Health Sciences Publications

Obesity is defined as the excess accumulation of intra-abdominal body fat, resulting in a state of chronic, low-grade proinflammation that can directly contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is an acute-phase protein that is expressed by a variety of tissue and cell sources and provides an anti-inflammatory property to downregulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines, in particular interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha. Although PTX3 may therapeutically aid in altering the proinflammatory milieu in obese individuals, and despite elevated expression of PTX3 mRNA observed in adipose tissue, the circulating level of PTX3 is reduced with …

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is associated with obesity and, indirectly, with unhealthy diet. The role of dietary components in HFpEF is, however, largely unknown. In this study, the authors showed that in obese HFpEF patients, consumption of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), was associated with better cardiorespiratory fitness, and UFA consumption correlated with better diastolic function and with greater fat-free mass. Similarly, mice fed with a high-fat diet rich in UFA and low in sugars had preserved myocardial function and reduced weight gain. Randomized clinical trials increasing dietary UFA consumption and reducing sugar consumption are warranted to confirm …

The Effects Of Ugg Boots On Lower Extremity Walking, Ariana Lafavre Jan 2017

The Effects Of Ugg Boots On Lower Extremity Walking, Ariana Lafavre

Undergraduate Review

UGG boots have become an increasingly popular choice in footwear. Women, especially, have bought UGG boots at a high rate, making the shoe one of the top footwear choices in today’s world. UGG boots can be described as a type of flat footwear and flat footwear does not provide medial longitudinal arch support on the bottom of the foot. This lack of support may cause foot injury due to over pronation in the subtalar joint. There was still the question of if UGG boots limits rear foot pronation movement. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the …

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Traumatic Brain Injury Caused By Blast In The Open Field, Ke Feng Jan 2017

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Traumatic Brain Injury Caused By Blast In The Open Field, Ke Feng

Wayne State University Dissertations

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a signature wound of modern warfare. The current incomplete understanding of its injury mechanism impedes the development of strategies for effective protection of bTBI. Despite a considerable amount of experimental animal studies focused on the evaluation of brain neurotrauma caused by blast exposure, there is very limited knowledge on the biomechanical responses of the gyrenecephalic brain subjected to primary free-field blast waves imposed in vivo, and the correlation analysis between the biomechanical responses and its injury outcomes. Such information is crucial to the development of injury criteria of bTBI.

This study aims to evaluate …
