Barriers To Physical Activity And Healthy Eating In Children As Perceived By Low-Income Parents: A Case Study, David W. Hey, Kristina M. Kelly, Stephanie Teaford, Ann Yelmokas Mcdermott

Kinesiology and Public Health

During the past three decades the prevalence of childhood obesity has steadily increased in the United States. Causes of childhood obesity are complex and include numerous individual and environmental factors. The purpose of this study was to determine parent perceptions on the social-ecological barriers (community, school, and family) to physical activity and healthy eating, perceived specific to their children. Self-reported data gathered from a 50-item questionnaire and six focus groups were conducted with parents (n=43) enrolled in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. Participants (16 to 67 years old) were predominately female (88.4%), Hispanic (67%), low income, and living …

Variability Of Sedentary Behavior Throughout A Seven-Day Measurement Period: 785 Board #181, Mary Tuttle Imboden, Seth Donaldson, Leonard Kaminsky

Faculty Publications - Department of Kinesiology

Time in sedentary behavior (SB) has been shown to be associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic disease. However, surprisingly little is known about some fundamental measurement issues including how SB varies on a daily basis.

Inhibition Of The Myostatin Signaling Pathway In Cultured Muscle Cells By A Novel Small Molecule, Ryan Matekel, Robert Hyldahl May 2015

Inhibition Of The Myostatin Signaling Pathway In Cultured Muscle Cells By A Novel Small Molecule, Ryan Matekel, Robert Hyldahl

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Muscle wasting is a symptom of cancer, AIDS, renal failure, heart failure, aging, prolonged bed rest, and has been seen in rodent models for burn, and kidney disease (Han, 2013). Muscle wasting negatively impacts quality of life by decreasing functional independence and increasing morbidity and mortality (Anker, 1997). Myostatin is a protein that negatively regulates muscle mass and is primarily expressed within skeletal muscle (Lee & McPherron, 2001). It exerts its effect by binding to a receptor and initiating a signaling cascade that involves phosphorylation of two kinase proteins called SMAD-2 and SMAD-3 (Sartori et al., 2009). Genetic studies have …

Slow Walking On A Treadmill Desk Does Not Negatively Affect Executive Abilities: An Examination Of Cognitive Control, Conflict Adaptation, Response Inhibition, And Post-Error Slowing, Michael J. Slow Walking On A Treadmill Desk Does Not Negatively Affect Executive Abilities: An Examination Of Cognitive Control, Conflict Adaptation, Response Inhibition, And Post-Error Slowing, Michael J. Larson, James D. Lecheminant, Kaylie Carbine, Kyle R. Hill, Edward Christenson, Travis Masterson, Rick Lecheminant

Faculty Publications

An increasing trend in the workplace is for employees to walk on treadmills while working to attain known health benefits; however, the effect of walking on a treadmill during cognitive control and executive function tasks is not well known. We compared the cognitive control processes of conflict adaptation (i.e., congruency sequence effects—improved performance following high-conflict relative to low-conflict trials), post-error slowing (i.e., Rabbitt effect), and response inhibition during treadmill walking (1.5 mph) relative to sitting. Understanding the influence of treadmill desks on these cognitive processes may have implications for worker health and productivity. Sixty-nine individuals were randomized to either a …

Cardiorespiratory Responses To High Intensity Interval Shallow Water Exercise, Laura Miller, Mitchell Fisher, Heather Gerrish, Karen Roemer, Debra D'Acquisto May 2015

Cardiorespiratory Responses To High Intensity Interval Shallow Water Exercise, Laura Miller, Mitchell Fisher, Heather Gerrish, Karen Roemer, Debra D'Acquisto

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cardiorespiratory responses to shallow water, high intensity interval exercise (SW-HIIE). Interestingly, no studies have investigated the physiological responses of performing HIIE in a water medium. Thus, the main question of this investigation was the following: What is the physiological load imposed on the human body during an acute SW-HIIE session? Physically active females, n=9 and 26+6 yrs, volunteered for this descriptive study. Volunteers performed a familiarization trial, an incremental maximal shallow water exercise test, and a SW-HIIE session. Participants were submerged to ~75 percent of stature (axillary level). SW-HIIE consisted of …

The Temporal And Directional Dependencies Of Sway During 10 Seconds Of Single Leg Stance In Young, Healthy College Students, David Vanderheyden May 2015

The Temporal And Directional Dependencies Of Sway During 10 Seconds Of Single Leg Stance In Young, Healthy College Students, David Vanderheyden

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Background: Single Leg Stance (SLS) testing is used in clinical assessments of balance, but little is known about the temporal structure of sway parameters during this test. SLS research is equivocal on the effects of sway over time and the direction of balance initiation. Sway data in a healthy young population may provide insight on how balance is initiated and maintained in relation to the initial step direction. This may lead to novel approaches to help healthy elderly populations decrease fall risk and fall-related mortality. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the temporal and directional dependencies of …

Wheelchair Training Program For New Manual Wheelchair Users, Kerri Ann Morgan May 2015

Wheelchair Training Program For New Manual Wheelchair Users, Kerri Ann Morgan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Manual wheelchairs are commonly used for everyday mobility among people with lower limb impairments, including persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). Manual wheelchair users often experience pain and chronic overuse injuries in their upper extremities, limiting their mobility and their ability to complete daily activities. The repetitive trauma of propelling a wheelchair may be a contributing factor to upper extremity pain and injury. The anatomy of the upper extremities is not designed for the number of repetitions and the amount of force involved in everyday wheelchair propulsion. Research has been conducted to identify recommendations for decreasing the number of repetitions …

Assessment Of Real-World Upper Limb Activity In Adults With Chronic Stroke, Ryan Bailey May 2015

Assessment Of Real-World Upper Limb Activity In Adults With Chronic Stroke, Ryan Bailey

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Hemiparesis is a common motor impairment following stroke that leads to disability. The goal of stroke-related physical rehabilitation is to reduce the severity of motor-related disability in hopes that improved motor capacity (i.e. what one can do) will generalize to improved motor performance (i.e. what one actually does) in everyday activities. Recent studies have demonstrated that motor capacity and motor performance are distinct domains of motor function, but few have objectively measured motor performance. Furthermore, even though many studies have demonstrated that motor capacity is only moderately associated with motor performance, few studies have examined other factors that might influence …

Human Movement Variability And Aging, Nicholas Stergiou, Jenny A. Kent, Denise Mcgrath May 2015

Human Movement Variability And Aging, Nicholas Stergiou, Jenny A. Kent, Denise Mcgrath

Journal Articles

An optimal level of variability enables us to interact adaptively and safely to a continuously changing environment, where often our movements must be adjusted in a matter of milliseconds. A large body of research exists that demonstrates natural variability in healthy gait (along with variability in other, healthy biological signals such as heart rate) and a loss of this variability in aging and injury, as well as in a variety of neurodegenerative and physiological disorders. We submit that this field of research is now in pressing need of an innovative “next step” that goes beyond the many descriptive studies that …
