In servant leadership (SL), a leader’s primary objective is to fulfill their followers’ needs. Sport-specific research has shown that coach SL is positively related to athletes’ motivation and athletic coping skills (e.g., Hammermeister et al., 2008), but it is unknown if athlete SL has similar relationships to these variables. The aim of this study was to examine how peer SL and basic psychological needs (BPN) related to intrinsic motivation and athletic coping skills and to determine if perceived SL varied between co-acting and interacting sports.
