Community, Culture And Identity In An Age Of Globalization, Katie Wiggins Jan 2013

Community, Culture And Identity In An Age Of Globalization, Katie Wiggins

Occam's Razor

As we move further into the age of globalization, we are seeing changes not only at a global level but at individual and communal levels; changes that we cannot wholly identify but that we recognize in ourselves. We are adapting to a global world, one that is affecting our identity and culture and, as we attempt to hold on to this identity and still converse with a larger world, we ultimately are forced to reshape our identities. Some may wonder what this will mean for the future and to what extent it affects us as individuals and communities. To answer …

Effect Of A High-Intensity Isometric Potentiating Warm-Up On Bat Velocity, Sheryl L. (Sheryl Lynn) Gilmore Jan 2013

Effect Of A High-Intensity Isometric Potentiating Warm-Up On Bat Velocity, Sheryl L. (Sheryl Lynn) Gilmore

WWU Graduate School Collection

The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effect of a high-intensity isometric potentiating warm-up on subsequent maximal horizontal bat velocity in experienced female softball players (n = 28). The isometric potentiating warm-up consisted of 3 sets of 5-second maximal voluntary contractions held in the early swing phase, pulling against an immovable device. The warm-up was designed to acutely enhance muscle performance by inducing post-activation potentiation (PAP), ultimately eliciting an increase in bat velocity. Because optimal recovery duration following a potentiating warm-up can be highly variable, swing trials were conducted at pre-determined rest intervals (1, 2, 4, 6, …

The Effect Of Creatine And Magnesium Supplementation On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Karla W. (Karla Wesley) Landis Jan 2013

The Effect Of Creatine And Magnesium Supplementation On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Karla W. (Karla Wesley) Landis

WWU Graduate School Collection

This purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of four weeks of magnesiumcreatine chelate (MgCr), alkaline creatine (AlkCr), and placebo (P) on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Subjects were 36 young (18-24 years old), healthy, recreationally active individuals, randomly assigned to groups. Double blind supplementation was dextran (P), 5 g creatine, 400 mg (MgCr), and 5 g creatine plus soda ash (AlkCr) per day. Subjects exercised on an eccentric training machine with foot pedals yielding force that was resisted eccentrically. Peak eccentric force was obtained at 35 cycles per minute. Subjects maintained 65% of the peak eccentric force, …

The Initial Effects Of Kinesio Tape On Shoulder Joint Position Sense At Increasing Elevations, Lindsay M. Aarseth Jan 2013

The Initial Effects Of Kinesio Tape On Shoulder Joint Position Sense At Increasing Elevations, Lindsay M. Aarseth

WWU Graduate School Collection

Joint position sense (JPS) is a key factor for developing and maintaining motor pathways which manage neuromuscular control of joint. This neuromuscular control is important as it helps perform specialized tasks, especially at the shoulder where stability is sacrificed for mobility. Therefore, when there is damage to the joint or the surrounding tissues the mechanoreceptors are also impaired which alters a person's proprioception. As a result of alteration in proprioception one's sense of movement and JPS is also altered which in turn diminishes his/her ability to perform specialized tasks. In the present study, shoulder JPS was assessed at increasing elevations …
