Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a physiological marker of training adaptation among athletes. However, HRV interpretation is challenging when assessed in isolation due to its sensitivity to various training and non-training-related factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between athlete-self report measures of recovery (ASRM) and HRV throughout a preparatory training period. Ultra-short natural logarithm of the root mean square of successive differences (LnRMSSD) and subjective ratings of sleep quality, fatigue, muscle soreness, stress and mood were acquired daily for 4 weeks among Division-1 sprint-swimmers (n = 17 males). ASRM were converted to z-scores …

Stretch Could Reduce Hamstring Injury Risk During Sprinting By Right Shifting The Length-Torque Curve, Mianfang Ruan, Li Li, Chen Chen, Xie Wu

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Stretch could reduce hamstring injury risk during sprinting by right shifting the length-torque curve. J Strength Cond Res 32(8): 2190–2198, 2018—It was hypothesized that static stretch would shift the length-torque curve to the right, which may reduce the risk of muscle strain injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute effects of static stretching of hamstring (SSH) on the risk of hamstring injury during sprinting indicated by the shift of the length–torque relationship. Twelve female college athletes (age: 20.8 ± 0.7 years; height: 1.61 ± 0.05 m; body mass: 54.25 ± 4.22 kg) participated in this study. …

The Contribution Of Small And Large Sensory Afferents To Postural Control In Patients With Peripheral Neuropathy, Li Li, Shuqi Zhang, John Dobson May 2018

The Contribution Of Small And Large Sensory Afferents To Postural Control In Patients With Peripheral Neuropathy, Li Li, Shuqi Zhang, John Dobson

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a multifarious disorder that is caused by damage to the peripheral nerves. Although the symptoms of PN vary with the etiology, most cases are characterized by impaired tactile and proprioceptive sensation that progresses in a distal to proximal manner. Balance also tends to deteriorate as the disorder becomes more severe, and those afflicted are substantially more likely to fall while walking compared with those who are healthy. Most patients with PN walk more cautiously and with greater stride variability than age-matched controls, but the majority of their falls occur when they must react to a perturbation …

The Mediation Of Perfectionism And Rumination On Mindfulness And Burnout In Collegiate Athletes, Nicholas S. Mcmillen Jan 2018

The Mediation Of Perfectionism And Rumination On Mindfulness And Burnout In Collegiate Athletes, Nicholas S. Mcmillen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Several positive and negative sport-related experiences can occur throughout an athlete’s career, which can affect the continuation or termination of said career. Although research has associated sport participation with positive outcomes (e.g., increases in motivation, autonomy), there are also negative sport-related outcomes such as burnout (Akhrem & Gazdowska, 2016; Garcia, 2015). Specifically, burnout has been identified as a multidimensional construct that includes three dimensions. Furthermore, mindfulness has been studied to minimize the risk of experiencing burnout (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). While several studies have examined mediators between mindfulness and burnout, there has been a dearth of research on perfectionism and rumination as …

The Role Of Relatedness In Youth Athlete Burnout, Megan Wittenberg Jan 2018

The Role Of Relatedness In Youth Athlete Burnout, Megan Wittenberg

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Aspen Institute’s 2016 State of Play report projects a decline in youth sport participation that is more pronounced in adolescent athletes. Although there are numerous potential benefits for youth sport participation, there are also potential consequences including burnout (chronic psychological syndrome consisting of emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishments, and sport devaluation (Raedeke, 1997). Approximately 1% to 9% of adolescent athletes experienced elevated levels of burnout, with current research suggesting that relatedness could have an influence on athlete burnout. In this instance, relatedness was defined as the extent to which individuals perceives significant others are genuinely invested …
