Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue causing myoglobin, creatine kinase, and other intracellular proteins and electrolytes to leak into circulation, disrupting cell homeostasis. Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) occurs after extremely rigorous physical training that could include high amounts of strenuous eccentric exercise. There has been an increase in reports for mild to severe ER as well as other musculoskeletal injuries as the popularity of extreme conditioning programs (e.g., CrossFit®) increases. Therefore, the main purposes of this investigation were to identify: primary risk factors associated with ER during CrossFit®, CrossFit® workouts that might induce a higher risk for the development of …

Physiological Responses To A 60-Minute Zumba® Class In College Age Females, Jill Best Sampson, Rebecca Rogers, Kyle Biggerstaff, Dyanna Bullinger, David Nichols, Vic Ben Ezra

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Zumba® is a group exercise format that incorporates aerobic dance components and claims to be an appropriate physical activity to be included in an exercise prescription for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine the energy expenditure and physiological effects of a 58.6 min Zumba® class and compare the average METs of the Zumba® class to the ACSM’s definition of vigorous activity of 6 METs. All participants (n=30) were volunteers from Zumba® classes at Texas Woman’s University. Participants attended three Zumba® classes to become familiar with the choreography. The Zumba® session where data was collected was …

Category: Undergraduate

ABSTRACT

Hip and ankle mobility are important variables in ball velocity and pitching performance. Possible indices in hip mobility are passivehip internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER). A contributor of ankle mobility is passive ankle dorsi-flexion (PAD). This study examines the relationship of selected indices in hip and ankle mobility for collegiate baseball pitchers with the athlete’s respective coaches’ rating of pitching performance …

Relationships Between Anthropometric And Performance Variables In Youth: Predictors Of Lower-Body Vertical Jump Peak Power, Alexander S. Drusch, Elias M. Carrillo, Jacob Adam Mota, Kendra D. Olinghouse, Matt S. Stock, Marc Lochbaum, Brennan J. Thompson Feb 2014

Relationships Between Anthropometric And Performance Variables In Youth: Predictors Of Lower-Body Vertical Jump Peak Power, Alexander S. Drusch, Elias M. Carrillo, Jacob Adam Mota, Kendra D. Olinghouse, Matt S. Stock, Marc Lochbaum, Brennan J. Thompson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

Anthropometric and physical performance measurements are commonly used for identifying specific physical traits in youth. Laboratory-based tests (e.g., linear velocity transducers), while accurate, provide practical limitations due to high costs and technical necessities. Thus, commonly used field tests may be useful alternatives for assessing fitness/performance characteristics of youth. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between anthropometric measures and lower-and upper-body power and strength measures; and to assess the predictive ability of these measures for lower-body vertical jump peak power (PP) output in youth. Thirty-nine pre-adolescent (mean±SD, range: age=7.8±1.7, 5-12 years) children volunteered to participate in …

ABSTRACT

Whole body energy expenditure (i.e., RMR) increases during acute cold exposure. Whether this increase in energy expenditure persists in the post-cold term in humans due to non-shivering thermogenesis has not yet been evaluated. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that RMR would be different directly following acute cold exposure. …

Snp-Induced Dilation Following A Short-Term Intraluminal Pressure Increase In Aged Skeletal Muscle Feed Arteries, John W. Seawright, Meredith J. Luttrell, Christopher R. Woodman

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

A decline in peripheral vascular function occurs with age and is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Moderate, aerobic exercise has been documented to improve or reverse the age-related decline in vascular function. The signal(s) associated with exercise responsible for the improvement in vascular function is not known; however, increased intraluminal pressure that occurs during a bout of exercise has been proposed to play an integral role. Previously, we reported that exposure to a short-term increase in intraluminal pressure improves endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses in aged arteries. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pressure treatment enhances …

Fitness A Stronger Exercise Motivator Among United States Female Collegiate Exercise Physiology Students Compared To Czech Republic, Jessica A. Peterson Ms

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Motivation is significant in influencing behavior change and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Physical appearance, weight control, and fitness enhancement are primary motivators for exercise participation and adherence. Exercise knowledge and cultural influences are less established. The purpose of this study was to compare exercise motivators among collegiate female exercise physiology students from the United States (US) and the Czech Republic (CR). US (N=28; age=21.1±2.2) and CR (N=25; age=20.2±1.5) freshman exercise physiology students from Valdosta State University (Valdosta, GA) and Palacký University (Olomouc, CR) volunteered for the study. A secondary analysis was conducted on female participants using body mass index (BMI) …

Decrements Of Muscle Protein Synthesis With Unloading Are Not Due To Insufficient Concentrations Of Intramuscular Leucine, Shaik T. Ullah, Kevin Shimkus, Yasaman Shirazi-Fard, Camilo Pohlenz, Jacqueline Perticone, Del Gatlin, Harry Hogan, James Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Skeletal muscle mass and strength play critical roles in quality of life, and significant muscle atrophy contributes to reduced function and can exacerbate some disease states. It is well-known that persistent reductions of mechanical loading in skeletal muscle result in degeneration. Generally, reductions of muscle protein synthesis are, at least in part, a major culprit with muscle loss under these conditions, and numerous countermeasures such as exercise and nutritional supplements, known to stimulate protein synthesis have been designed to maintain muscle mass under those conditions. Amino acid supplementation, particularly with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), has been suggested as a countermeasure …
