Nutrient Intake Of Marathon Runners, Janice V. Butler Sep 1988

Nutrient Intake Of Marathon Runners, Janice V. Butler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Three-day food records from a large group of marathon runners were analyzed and compared to various standards of dietary quality. Nutrient intake by the runners exceeded two-thirds the Recommended Dietary Allowance for all nutrients except for vitamin D and zinc in female runners. Energy and nutrient intake levels in the marathon runners were higher than those of the general US population except for fat and zinc in both males and females, and vitamin B12 in females. In general this group of runners consumed diets that would be considered more optimal than those of the general population. However, both caloric intake …

Steady State Oxygen Cost Of Arm Ergometry Using The Monark Rehab Trainer, Gregory R. Grazen Jan 1988

Steady State Oxygen Cost Of Arm Ergometry Using The Monark Rehab Trainer, Gregory R. Grazen

Masters Theses

This study was designed to determine the steady state oxygen cost of arm crank ergometry with the Monark Rehab Trainer, a device used for exercise training in many cardiac rehabilitation programs. Fifteen male (25.2 yrs. ± 4.1) and fifteen female (23.8 yrs. ± 4.0) subjects were tested in the seated position with the mid-point of the crank wheel adjusted to shoulder height. No attempt was made to stabilize the shoulder girdle, as this is typically not done when training with this device. The test protocol for both groups consisted of progressive three minute work stages followed by a thirty second …

The Effect Of Caloric Restriction And Exercise On Plasma Lipid And Lipoprotein Concentration, Jeffrey J. Zachwieja

Masters Theses

The independent and combined effects of exercise training and caloric restriction on the plasma concentration of lipid and lipoprotein was studied. Thirty-two female volunteers were assigned to one of three treatment groups; exercise only, diet only or diet plus exercise. The exercise only group participated in a walk/jog program three days per week. For 30 to 45 minutes these individuals either walked or jogged at a intensity which elicited a heart rate that was 70% of the max heart rate reserve. The diet only group participated in a behavior modification weight loss program which restricted caloric intake to 1200 kcals …

Theses and Dissertations

This study identified and analyzed the influence the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had on the decision of 309 respondents to exercise. The data obtained from the questionaires were analyzed using chi-square to compare males and females. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were justified: women were more influenced by the LDS Church to exercise than men; LDS males and females exercised more than average American adults; walking, jogging, and aerobic dance were the most popular choices of LDS exercisers; and, there is a need to improve the awareness of LDS members concerning the Physical …

Analysis Of Some Variations In Method Of Performing The Push-Up Among College Women, Clifford T. Mito Jan 1986

Analysis Of Some Variations In Method Of Performing The Push-Up Among College Women, Clifford T. Mito

All Master's Theses

This study utilized 90 college women from Central Washington University to determine if there are significant differences in strength scores between Rowney Knees-on Push-up Method and three body position variations and cadences. The main outcome of this research reflected two significant differences between Rowney's method and body position and cadences. No significant differences were found between experimental body position variations and cadences. The results of this study confirm the hypothesis that changes in push-up technique may produce significant differences in strength scores.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Five subjects (three females and two males) took part in an exercise regimen in order to determine if aerobic exercise results in an increase in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (HDL-C) in the plasma. The exercise regimen consisted of running three miles a day, five days per week for six months. Running speed was at such a pace that the subjects attained a minimum of 60% of their maximal heart rate reserve (MHRR). Before the training program began the following parameters were measured in all of the subjects: height, weight, percent body fat, maximal oxygen consumption (Vₒ₂ max), vital capacity, resting heart …

Anuran Activity Energetics, Scott R. Landrey Jul 1982

Anuran Activity Energetics, Scott R. Landrey

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents two separate experiments concerning aerobic and anaerobic amphibian energetics. The first study (Part I) investigates differential alterations in the kinetics of the anaerobic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase, in nine species of anurans with varying natural histories. The second study (Part II) studies changes in different anaerobic and aerobic physiological parameters in a single species (Rana catesbeiana) after six weeks of chronic exercised, unexercised-captive and for field frogs. The common theme of these two experiments involves the potential for physiological changes due to environmental stress. Part I examines different species to infer a possible evolutionary relationship to …

During both testing periods blood pressure, body weight and resting heart rate measurements were taken before beginning the treadmill protocol (progressive grade and speed increases up to 4% and 8 mph, respectively). The subjects ran on a motor …

Physiological Studies Of Heat Stress Acclimation During A Specific Exercise Regimen, Leland F. Morgans, Alan M. Johnson Jan 1982

Physiological Studies Of Heat Stress Acclimation During A Specific Exercise Regimen, Leland F. Morgans, Alan M. Johnson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Eleven subjects were used to determine if the exercise regimen of racquetball could be used as a heat stress acclimator. Core temperature, skin temperature, sweat production, and weight loss were recorded during a racquetball match. Skin and core temperatures were determined by using thermistors. Sweat was collected with modified stress electrodes. Weight loss was recorded by comparing nude weights at the beginning and end of a match. The results indicated that an hour of strenuous racquetball play caused a significant increase in core temperature with subsequent sweating which resulted in a significant decrease in skin temperature and weight loss. The …
