Isometric Isokinetic And Isotonic Strength Evaluation Of Subjects With Stable And Unstable Ankles, Lauren Nicole Snyder
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments can result in ankle instability problems. Limited data exists in relation to isokinetic and isometric strength measures of the ankle, with an absence of data in relation to isotonic power measures. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify if there is a difference between subjects with unstable ankles and subjects with stable ankles with respect to isokinetic ankle strength, isometric ankle strength, and isotonic ankle power. Eighteen subjects with ankle instability (age, 23.9 ± 2.81 years; height 170.4 ± 8.9 cm; mass 73 ± 18.9 kg) and eighteen subjects with healthy ankles …
Lactate Threshold: The Comparison Of Running On A Land Treadmill Versus Head-Out Water Immersion Treadmill Running, Stephanie Alyce Jones
Lactate Threshold: The Comparison Of Running On A Land Treadmill Versus Head-Out Water Immersion Treadmill Running, Stephanie Alyce Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction. Exercise and head-out water immersion (HOI) have consistently reported an increase in central blood volume associated with the cephalad shift in blood volume. This causes an increase in left ventricular end diastolic volume and greater stroke volume during exercise compared to exercise in air at similar metabolic costs. In contrast, the metabolic response, specifically, blood lactate accumulation during exercise combined with HOI has yielded varying results depending on the mode of exercise. At present it appears that during exercise at similar metabolic costs, cycle ergometry exercise augments plasma lactate over treadmill running while HOI reduces the plasma lactate response …

Department Of Cardiac Function In Lcad Deficient Mice After A Single Bout Of Endurance Exercise, Evan M. Lord
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Fatty acids are the primary fuel source for cardiac tissue in both humans and animals. These become especially important during times of starvation and long bouts of exercise. Fatty acids are broken down into smaller, useable acyl-CoA subunits through a process called beta-oxidation. The first step in this process must be catalyzed by one of four acyl-CoA dehydrogenase enzymes depending on the length of the fatty acid to be metabolized. The enzyme that catalyzes the break-down of long-chain fatty acids, long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCAD), was examined. The objective of this study was to determine how a single bout of endurance …

Participation And Determinants Of Physical Activity Amongst Irish 3rd Level Students., Jonathan Lerner
Theses
Currently, there is a dearth of research investigating physical activity patterns among Irish third level young adults (17-22 year olds). Both national and international research report that levels of physical activity decline in adolescence, this trend being most pronounced among females. Various biological, psychological, social, and environmental determinants have been found to influence physical activity; however, specific factors associated with the decline in activity during adolescence remain largely unknown. This research study examines participation and determinants of physical activity among Irish third level students.
A “National questionnaire” was administered to a sample of 532 students from Health Education Authority (HEA) …
