Grow More Wool, W L. Mcgarry, R. J. Lightfoot
Grow More Wool, W L. Mcgarry, R. J. Lightfoot
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE amount of wool that each sheep grows is determined by many things, including the amount and quality of pasture available or how the sheep are fed, the stocking rate, the general health and thrift of the sheep and other management considerations such as cropping and the time of lambing.
How Teachers Of High School Biology May Introduce Heredity And Birds Through The Use Of Doves, Donald Hood Dickinson
How Teachers Of High School Biology May Introduce Heredity And Birds Through The Use Of Doves, Donald Hood Dickinson
Graduate Student Research Papers
It was the purpose of this study (1) to present a method of teaching principles of heredity at a level understandable to students of a high school biology class, (2) to present a list of resource materials for use in a heredity unit, and (3) to show how the use of live animals might intensify student interest in this subject as well as in other phases of bird life such as nest building, incubation of eggs, hatching of eggs, voice and communication, and effects of nutrition on chick development.
Select On Fleece Weight And Cull The Low Producers, W L. Mcgarry
Select On Fleece Weight And Cull The Low Producers, W L. Mcgarry
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
EFFICIENT calling of maiden ewes before they join the breeding flock is an essential part of any policy of flock improvement.
Removal of the low wool producers should be one of the first considerations when culling the flock.
Selection Of Dairy Heifers, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Selection Of Dairy Heifers, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE time is approaching on most dairy farms when a decision has to be made on which of the year's crop of heifers are to be retained.
Replacements are needed not only to keep up herd numbers, but also to increase the average production.
This is herd improvement—surely the aim of all dairy farmers.

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TO help improve the quality of laying stock for poultry farmers in Western Australia the Poultry Branch of the Department of Agriculture conducts annual random sample egg laying tests.
The tests reveal good and bad points in the laying strains available, and their results are a valuable guide to breeders.
Most of the chickens sold in Western Australia are now bred by hatcherymen who participate in the Random Sample Tests.

Pigs On The Dairy Farm : Records Show State Of The Business, P C. Beck
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
HOW many pig raisers have even a rough idea of their margin of profit from pigs?
Even in the present time of low returns, the answer is obviously "far too few".

A Review Of The Status Of The Teaching Of Genetics And Evolution In High School Biology Courses With Suggestions For Improving The Teaching Of These Subjects, Carl Jay Bajema
Masters Theses
Introduction
It is the purpose of this thesis to: (1) discuss the place of genetics and evolution in high school biology courses; (2) specify the objectives that should be attained in teaching genetics and evolution; (3) discuss the current status of the teaching of genetics and evolution in high school biology courses; (4) suggest means of overcoming the three problems which have resulted in the poor teaching of genetics and evolution on the high school level -- first, the problem of religious opposition to the teaching of evolution; second, the problem of a lack of knowledge on the part of …

THIS species was described by Mueller in February, 1880, from a fragment with buds and flowers without fruits, collected by George Maxwell in South-Western Australia, without any locality.
It remained imperfectly known until a few years ago when a specimen was collected, again without precise locality, but somewhere between Esperance and Eyre,

Selecting And Culling Sheep Flocks, H E. Fels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
SHEEP flocks are culled and selected for two main reasons—firstly to get immediate improvements in the present generation and secondly, to improve future generations.

Identical Twins, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE response to the Department's appeal for identical twin calves has been gratifying, and so far this year five sets have been located and collected.
In view of the rare occurrence of identical twinning, this indicates excellent co-operation from dairy farmers.

AS part of the poultry improvement plan for Western Australia, the Department of Agriculture inaugurated a random sample laying test for commercial grade chickens at the Poultry Research Station, Herdsman Lake, in 1957.
The results of the first test appeared in the May-June, 1959 issue of the Journal of Agriculture and those of the second test in the June, 1960 issue.

Flock owners' thoughts are now turning towards culling.
Culling should remove the worst sheep and keep the best to fill the bales and breed replacements.
A valuable aid to this annual task is Culling by Fleece Weight during shearing

Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay
Selecting A Herd Sire, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THERE is now ample evidence that most of the differences in production between herds are determined by feeding and management, with differences in genetic merit playing a relatively minor role.
It seems that the quickest way to increase production is by improved feeding, whilst in some herds much production is being lost by faulty milking techniques.

Famous Sheep Breeds. 2. The Corriedale, J A. Mallett
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Corriedale sheep is a breed which has achieved widespread popularity throughout the world as a dual-purpose animal.
It was evolved by New Zealand breeders who—not fully satisfied with the performance of either the Merino or the British longwool sheep under their conditions—sought an animal which would combine the superlative wool-producing properties, and outstanding foraging ability of the Merino with the better meat production and better mothering qualities of the British sheep.
The Problem Of Low Solids-Not-Fat In Milk, Laurence C. Snook
The Problem Of Low Solids-Not-Fat In Milk, Laurence C. Snook
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TO the consumer of milk, the solids-not-fat fractions is of prime importance.
This contains the protein, the minerals and the milk-sugar which collectively make milk such a valuable and palatable food.
If we wish to encourage increased consumption of milk as a health food it is essential that quality must be maintained and if possible improved.
Producers and distributors must always remember that if maximum sales are to be obtained, the needs of the consumer must remain paramount.

Famous Sheep Breeds. 3. The Leicester, J A. Mallett
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Leicester sheep, often referred to in Australia as the "English" Leicester to distinguish it from its relative, the Border Leicester, is the oldest of the improved British breeds.
Its development from the nondescript local sheep marked an advance in stockbreeding technique which did much to make Britain famous as the "stud-farm of the world."

Strickland's Gum, Or Goldfields Yellow-Flowered Gum (Eucalyptus Stricklandii Maiden), Charles Austin Gardner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THIS mallee is unmistakable by reason of its peculiar habit and thick roughbarked stem and branches, both of which have longitudinally-fissured persistent bark right up to the distinctly reddish branchlets.
The leaves are broad and thick, a bright shining green in colour, with the mid-ribs usually a purplish-red. The heads of flowers are on thick red round-in-section foot-stalks which hang almost vertically, and the reddish bud-cap conceals the ultimately free, bright yellow filaments.
The widely-spreading thick branches, and in general the rough stout appearance of the shrub inspired the name "grossa" from the Latin grossus meaning thick.

THIS species is a mallee with an average stature of 5-15 feet, with several erect twiggy branches, the bark smooth except at the very base where unshed patches of a dark greyish-brown adhere to the stems, otherwise it sheds in small plates, leaving a smooth grey-brown bark.
