Knowledge And Expectations Of Support People In Prenatal Genetic Counseling Sessions, Michelle A. Mcdougle May 2013

Knowledge And Expectations Of Support People In Prenatal Genetic Counseling Sessions, Michelle A. Mcdougle

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Prenatal genetic counseling patients have the ability to choose from a myriad of screening and diagnostic testing options, each with intricacies and caveats regarding accuracy and timing. Decisions regarding such testing can be difficult and are often made on the same day that testing is performed. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider that the support people brought to an appointment may have a role in the decision-making process. We aimed to better define this potential role by examining the incoming knowledge and expectations of support people who attended prenatal genetic counseling appointments.

Support people were asked to complete a survey …

A Qualitative Study On How Prenatal Genetic Counselors Prioritize Cultural Issues When Counseling Patients, Darcy Katherine Berry Jan 2013

A Qualitative Study On How Prenatal Genetic Counselors Prioritize Cultural Issues When Counseling Patients, Darcy Katherine Berry

Theses and Dissertations

The genetic counseling community has long recognized that the successful outcome of a session with a patient whose cultural background differs from the genetic counselor's is best achieved through recognition of the cultural differences and implementation of specific skills to overcome cultural barriers. Although research has examined the need and effects of cultural competency in genetic counseling, no prior study has evaluated how genetic counselors perceive the importance of addressing cultural issues in a genetic counseling session. Prenatal genetic counselors were recruited by emailing all NSGC members. For this study, sixteen prenatal genetic counselors were interviewed and asked to prioritize …

Examining The Differences In Rapport Between Male And Female Cancer Genetic Counselors And Female Clients, John Abernethy Jan 2013

Examining The Differences In Rapport Between Male And Female Cancer Genetic Counselors And Female Clients, John Abernethy

Theses and Dissertations

Genetic counseling is a field in which client-counselor rapport plays a critical role in client satisfaction with the genetic counseling process. One factor that may impact this rapport is gender of the genetic counselor. Previous studies in the field of psychological counseling suggest that gender is not a significant moderator of this rapport. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been published in the field of genetic counseling examining the impact that the gender of the genetic counselor has on client-counselor rapport. To study this effect, an amended version of Horvath & Greenberg's (1989) Working Alliance Inventory tool …

Delivering Genetic Education And Genetic Counseling For Rare Diseases In Rural Brazil, A.X. Acosta, K Abe-Sandes, R Giugliani, Alan H. Bittles Jan 2013

Delivering Genetic Education And Genetic Counseling For Rare Diseases In Rural Brazil, A.X. Acosta, K Abe-Sandes, R Giugliani, Alan H. Bittles

Research outputs 2013

Brazil is the largest country in Latin America, with an ethnically diverse, Portuguese-speaking and predominantly Roman Catholic population of some 194 million. Universal health care is provided under the Federal Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde) but, as in many other middle and low income countries, access to medical genetics services is limited in rural and remote regions of the country. Since there is no formally recognized Genetic Counseling profession, genetic counseling is provided by physicians, trained either in medical genetics or a related clinical discipline. A comprehensive medical genetics program has been established in Monte Santo, an inland …

Working With Patients At Risk For Hereditary Degenerative Brain Disorders, Stephen John White Jan 2013

Working With Patients At Risk For Hereditary Degenerative Brain Disorders, Stephen John White

Theses and Dissertations

Hereditary degenerative brain disorders (HDBDs) are a unique class of genetic conditions that result in progressive loss of function within the nervous system, many of which present during adulthood. Given this, the diagnosis of a HDBD can be daunting for both the patient and the genetic counselor assisting in medical care. The purpose of this study was to find themes among genetic counselors who see this patient population and help provide a framework to counselors entering this field by recognizing verified methods of HDBD counseling. Sixteen genetic counselors who routinely see patients at-risk for HDBDs were interviewed concerning how they …

Analysis Of Human Sperm Chromatin Integrity, Silvina M. Bocca Apr 1994

Analysis Of Human Sperm Chromatin Integrity, Silvina M. Bocca

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Determining potential maternal or paternal sources of abnormal chromosomal constitution gives opportunity for preconception genetic counseling. The most direct determination is achieved by analyzing the nuclear constitution of the gametes.

The present study evaluated the integrity of human spermatozoal nuclear material in the two condensation stages of chromatin and chromosomes. Original semen samples (ORI) and their swim-up fractions (SW, selected for motility) from men of known (donors) and unknown (patients) fertility were analyzed. The extent of chromatin condensation was assessed by light microscopy and flow cytometry during the time course of a chemically-induced decondensation reaction.

Motile spermatozoa were used to …
