Genetic Structure Of The Copperhead (Viperidae: Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen) At Its Most Northern Distribution, Brenna Aaren Levine
Genetic Structure Of The Copperhead (Viperidae: Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen) At Its Most Northern Distribution, Brenna Aaren Levine
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The focus of molecular studies in North American pitvipers has been on species that warrant conservation concern, such as Timber (Crotalus horridus) and Massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus catenatus). Scant effort has been directed towards the molecular ecology of the Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix), other than to evaluate male reproduction in a laboratory setting and phylogenetic history. Thus, employing DNA-based molecular techniques to study the natural history of A. contortrix will broaden our knowledge of molecular ecology in North American pitvipers, and particularly in a non-threatened species that can serve as a surrogate for threatened and endangered …
The Role Of Centromeric Chromatin And Kinetochore-Associated Factors In Chromosome Segregation, Wesley Williamson
The Role Of Centromeric Chromatin And Kinetochore-Associated Factors In Chromosome Segregation, Wesley Williamson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous work in our lab has identified a point mutation in HTA1, one of the genes encoding histone H2A, which causes an increase-in-ploidy phenotype in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This histone mutant strain was used to carry out a transposon insertion screen to identify suppressors of the increase-in-ploidy phenotype. This screen identified all three subunits of the Hda histone deacetylase complex, HDA1, HDA2, and HDA3. This study aims to elucidate the function of the Hda complex in chromosome segregation by exploring interactions among the members of the complex, as well as interactions between Hda complex and kinetochore components. …
Diversity, Identification, Mapping And Pyramiding Of Genes For Resistance To Soybean Mosaic Virus [Glycine Max (L.) Merr.], Innan Gloria Cervantes Martinez
Diversity, Identification, Mapping And Pyramiding Of Genes For Resistance To Soybean Mosaic Virus [Glycine Max (L.) Merr.], Innan Gloria Cervantes Martinez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Soybean Mosaic Virus (SMV) is a prevalent viral pathogen transmitted by aphids and via seed, causing significant yield loss and quality reduction. There are seven SMV strain groups (G1 to G7) and three resistance loci( Rsv1, Rsv3, and Rsv4) reported in soybean. New sources of SMV resistance would be valuable for breeding cultivars with durable resistance to multiple strains. The objectives of this research were to analyze genetic diversity of SMV-resistant soybean germplasm at the molecular level; to pyramid three genes from different sources for durable SMV resistance; and to identify and map new genes/alleles for differential reactions to SMV …
The Incidence Of Plexiform Lesion Formation In Lines Divergently Selected For Ascites, James Grant Mason
The Incidence Of Plexiform Lesion Formation In Lines Divergently Selected For Ascites, James Grant Mason
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Complex Vascular Lesions, (CVL) are a common vascular change associated with idiopathicpulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). CVL have been characterized in studies using animal models involving, but not limited to, Sprague-Dawley rats and poultry (Abe et al., 2010; Wideman et al., 2011).IPAH has been documented in poultry although no connection has been made with CVLs. The current study characterizes CVL in the lungs from broilers derived from lines divergently selected for 15 generations for ascites susceptibility under conditions of simulated high altitude. The ascites RES and SUS lines were sampled for CVL incidence over time. Both lines were reared in a …
Effects Of Osteopontin Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Bull Semen Quality, Chance L. Williams
Effects Of Osteopontin Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Bull Semen Quality, Chance L. Williams
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Two groups of bulls were utilized to evaluate if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the Bos taurus OPN gene (GenBank accession # AY878328.1) promoter region were related to bull semen quality variables as evaluated by computer assisted semen analysis (CASA). Group 1 consisted of 19 Angus and Balancer bulls, ranging in age from 5 to 8 years, which were collected weekly during a 2-month period (July 15, 2010 through September 19, 2010). Group 2 consisted of 16 Brahman influenced (1/8 to 3/16 Brahman) bulls, mean age = 1.1 ± 0.1 year, that were collected monthly for a 7 month period …
Applications Of Variable Number Tandem Repeat Genotyping In The Validation Of An Animal Medical Model And Gene Flow Studies In Threatened Populations Of Reptiles, Candace D. Smith
Applications Of Variable Number Tandem Repeat Genotyping In The Validation Of An Animal Medical Model And Gene Flow Studies In Threatened Populations Of Reptiles, Candace D. Smith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We used variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) to validate the chicken as a human medical model for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. We identified seven regions on four chromosomes and interrogated for VNTR markers that significantly associate with Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome/ascites. In those regions, we identified 7 candidate genes; AGTR1, ACE, p38MAPK, SST, 5HT2B, NET1, and CALM3 for further analysis as significantly contributing QTL for ascites/PHS. We also used variable number tandem repeats to measure gene flow and gather evidence for multiple paternity in a population of Timber rattlesnakes, Crotalus horridus. We were able to verify 1 VNTR that can be used …
