Identification, Mapping And Treatment Of The Invasive Rosa Multiflora Using Unmanned Aerial Systems And Machine Learning Models, Kylie Virginia Shaw
Identification, Mapping And Treatment Of The Invasive Rosa Multiflora Using Unmanned Aerial Systems And Machine Learning Models, Kylie Virginia Shaw
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Invasive species are introduced species that cause detrimental impacts to the native ecosystem or cause harm to human health. The work necessary for land managers to survey for and treat invasive species takes up limited time, labor, and financial resources. This study assesses how Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and machine learning models can be used to make the identification, mapping, and treatment of invasive vegetation more efficient and effective. A UAS-mounted multispectral camera captured images of our target species, Rosa multiflora (multiflora rose), throughout its growing season in southwest Pennsylvania. A random forest machine learning model was trained on these …
Screening Herbicides For Use In Newly Established Short Rotation Coppice Shrub Willow Plantations, Alex Thomas Smith
Screening Herbicides For Use In Newly Established Short Rotation Coppice Shrub Willow Plantations, Alex Thomas Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A major setback for the establishment of short rotation coppice willow plantations is the control of competition from weeds. Weed competition has been found to cause increased mortality which lowers biomass yields when left uncontrolled. Mechanical weed control methods are the most used method of weed control, but their use can be complicated by cost, labor availability and site topography. Chemical weed control is also complicated by the fact that willow species are particularly sensitive to herbicides. Across three trials, we screen 11 herbicides for their potential to control weeds without significantly decreasing the vertical growth of willow trees. This …
The Effects Of Strip Clearcutting On Natural And Artificial Northern Red Oak Regeneration In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Stand, Patrick Aaron Plaugher
The Effects Of Strip Clearcutting On Natural And Artificial Northern Red Oak Regeneration In A Central Appalachian Hardwood Stand, Patrick Aaron Plaugher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There are well-known difficulties associated with regenerating oak stands throughout the Central Hardwoods region. To successfully regenerate oak, competitive sources of advance reproduction are required ahead of harvesting—a condition that is rarely present, especially on productive sites. While treatments that enhance seedling competitiveness (e.g., midstory removals, burning, vegetation control) are available, in practice, these are rarely implemented and/or effective because of large treatment costs and/or because they require delaying harvest.
As a potential alternative practice, we report the 10-yr results of a strip clearcut regeneration method. This method removes alternating 45-m wide strips across a mixed Appalachian hardwood …
Refine Fuels Treatments In The Wildland–Urban Interface With Wildlife In Mind, Miles Becker, Catrin M. Edgeley, David Stoner
Refine Fuels Treatments In The Wildland–Urban Interface With Wildlife In Mind, Miles Becker, Catrin M. Edgeley, David Stoner
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Conserving urban tree and shrub cover provides many benefits for wildlife and people, yet often becomes a lower priority than fuels treatments to mitigate fire risk in the wildland–urban interface (WUI). We support the principle that considering multiple objectives on privately owned property is valuable and can be achieved. Data sharing and collaboration between wildfire experts and wildlife biologists could improve the quality and extent of managing both animals and fire. Furthermore, the adoption of statewide policy and municipal regulations for preventing wildfires in the WUI provides an opportunity to incorporate ecological functions in the same directives for a balanced …

Tourism Carrying Capacity At Petungkriyono Forest And Its Supporting Areas, Nurwidya Ambarwati
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Supported by a variety of diversity and landscapes, the development of tourism in the Petungkriyono area is growing rapidly. Optimizing ecotourism services in the Petungkriyono forest without disrupting the ecosystem and damaging the environment can be done by limiting the number of visitors at tourism sites. This study aims to find out information about the tourism capacity of some tourist attractions in the local forest. This study uses the Cifuentes model to predict the maximum number of visitor capacities that can be accommodated in a tourist attraction called Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC), Real Carrying Capacity (RCC), and Effective Carrying Capacity …

Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Exchange And Ecosystem Services In Ecosystems Managed For Nature-Based Solutions Using Eddy Covariance, Remote Sensing, And Models, Lucas Clay
All Dissertations
As global temperatures rise due to climate change, nature-based solutions are increasingly being used to restore nature and to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Nature-based solutions draw on methodologies such as ecological forestry and improved forest management to reduce emissions and maximize resilience. These protocols are still in their infancy and additional measurements and case studies are important to optimizing these protocols. Herein this dissertation we describe multiple measurement methodologies for both greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and for ecosystem services. In coastal wetland ecosystems, the need for GHG measurements is paramount to understanding the ability of these ecosystems to reduce …

Historical Fire And Forest Structure In Western Dry Forests: Alternative Models, Controversies, And Management Plan Revision, Gordon Steinhoff
Historical Fire And Forest Structure In Western Dry Forests: Alternative Models, Controversies, And Management Plan Revision, Gordon Steinhoff
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Management plan revision is currently underway for national forests in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, the Pacific Northwest, and other regions of the country under the U.S. Forest Service’s 2012 Planning Rule. With respect to dry ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer forests in the Sierra Nevada and Pacific Northwest, agency scientists and others claim that these forests were historically open and parklike, with primarily large, well-distributed trees, few smaller trees, and sparse underlying vegetation, leaf litter, and woody debris. Large, high-severity fire was rare. Fire exclusion since the early 1900s has led to the “densification” of these forests and unnatural …

Building Gender Equity In Forestry Education: The Benefits Of Oregon’S Women Owning Woodlands Network, Lauren A. Grand, Tiffany Hopkins
Building Gender Equity In Forestry Education: The Benefits Of Oregon’S Women Owning Woodlands Network, Lauren A. Grand, Tiffany Hopkins
Journal of Extension
The Women Owning Woodlands Network was launched in 2005 as a way to provide collaborative and hands-on peer learning education to women who felt uncomfortable participating in traditional Extension programs. Since its inception the program as grown to provide education and resources for over 300 women. We surveyed these women to identify if the program continues to meet their needs. It is evident that WOWNet has continued to be an important part of OSU FNR’s outreach education program and continues to meet the needs of a historically undeserved group of landowners in ways that traditional programming does not.

Olaf: An Assessment Of Online Learning Outcomes Among Forestry And Natural Resource Management University Students, Krista Merry, Pete Bettinger, Taeyoon Lee
Journal of Extension
Online learning has become an important advance in education in the last decade. We developed an online learning system related to land and tree measurements. University students were given pre- and post-exposure surveys for two courses offered within the online system. Surveys were designed to assess whether the knowledge level and confidence of students increased through interaction with the online system. A final assessment was conducted to understand user experiences with the online technology. Statistically significant increases in knowledge and confidence concerning land measurement concepts and tree measurement topics were evident among survey participants. Survey participants agreed that the course …

Preparing For The Worst: Enhancing Seedling Traits To Reduce Transplant Shock In Semi-Arid Regions, Douglas Evan Mainhart, Bradley O. Christoffersen, R. Alexander Thompson, Charlotte M. Reemts, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
The spatial extent of semi-arid hot regions is forecasted to grow through the twenty-first century, complicating restoration and reforestation plans. In arid and semi-arid climates, seedlings are more susceptible to transplant shock due to lower soil moisture throughout the year. Determining strategies to reduce seedling stress and improve survival post-planting will be paramount to continued reforestation efforts in a changing climate. We quantified seedling physiological, morphological, and field performance (mortality and growth) response for five species native to the semi-arid region of South Texas (Erythrina herbacea L., Celtis pallida Torr., Fraxinus berlandieriana DC, Malpighia glabra L., and Citharexylum berlandieri B.L …
