Planting And Care Of Trees In The Wheatbelt, F Batini Jan 1971

Planting And Care Of Trees In The Wheatbelt, F Batini

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE climate of South Western Australia includes a long summer drought which subjects trees to considerable moisture stress.

Shade trees and shelter belts can be established successfully in the wheatbelt without hand watering, provided a suitable site and variety of tree is selected and a little time is spent in site preparation and care of the young tree.

This article, which is adapted from a Forests Department publication "Catalogue of Trees for growing under Western Australian conditions", sets out the best varieties of trees and establishment methods.

Chemical Control Of Eucalypts : Standing Timber, Stumps, Sucker Regrowth, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The eucalypt is particularly well adapted to withstand long periods without rain. The characteristics which make this possible also make the tree difficult to kill, without removing the stump and part of the root system.

Sentiment Changes And Recreation Participation, Perry J. Brown Oct 1970

Sentiment Changes And Recreation Participation, Perry J. Brown

Forest Management Faculty Publications

If participation in recreation activities represents a choice among alternatives, then such discretion may have implications for measuring activity participation. Following is a discussion of the discretionary nature of recreation and the importance of such discretion for use projection which utilizes participation rates. It is proposed that consumer sentiment about the economy at the time participation data are collected is important in evaluating the data and activity projections. The 1960 Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission projections indicated that participation in recreation activities would increase by a factor of three from 1960 to 2000 (13). More recent (1965) statistics published by …

Fire Weather : A Guide For Application Of Meteorological Information To Forest Fire Control Operations, Mark J. Schroeder, Charles C. Buck Jan 1970

Fire Weather : A Guide For Application Of Meteorological Information To Forest Fire Control Operations, Mark J. Schroeder, Charles C. Buck

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

Weather is never static. It is always dynamic. Its interpretation is an art. The art of applying complex information about weather to the equally complex task of wildland fire control cannot be acquired easily-especially not by the mere reading of a book. The environment is in control in wildland firefighting. Free-burning fires are literally nourished by weather elements, atmospheric components, and atmospheric motion. Outguessing mother nature in order to win control is an extremely difficult task. We need to soothe her with understanding. We have attempted to present information in such a way that your daily and seasonal awareness of …

Lipid Content And Seasonal Activity Of Odontopus Calceatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Adults, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Overwintering Odontopus calceatus (Say) adults were first observed feeding on April 10. Weekly collections during the activity period indicated that new-generation adults began emerging June 4. By July 23 they had entered the forest litter for hibernation. Lipid content decreased throughout the hibernation period as the weevils utilized 77% of their total lipid content during this time. The most rapid decrease during hibernation occurred from February to March, just prior to mating and oviposition in the spring. No increase in lipid content occurred during the activity period in spring and summer. A great increase in lipid content did occur within …

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris Jan 1969

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.

The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt Jan 1969

The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Lack of information is a primary factor accounting for visitors jamming recreation sites, overflowing onto highway rights-of-way and blocking facilities [5, p. 95]. In attempting to attain an even distribution of visitors, the importance of information signing as a management tool is often overlooked. Oxenfeldt indicates that advertising (information) alters behavior most efficiently when it supplies information customers are seeking [4, p. 471]. Tocher and Kearns noted in visitor characteristic studies that travelers seek different experiences when touring than when at home or work [6]. Information signs may lead the visitor to these different experiences. Hypothesizing that signs can influence …

South Dakota Bird Notes, Keith E. Evans, Roger R. Kerbs Jun 1967

South Dakota Bird Notes, Keith E. Evans, Roger R. Kerbs

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Approximately 90,000 small stock ponds are scattered throughout South Dakota. The majority of these ponds are less than 10 acres in size, and depend entirely on surface runoff for their water supply. Although their primary purpose is to provide drinking water for livestock, many species of waterfowl and shorebirds use the pond areas for resting and feeding during spring and fall migrations, and for nesting habitat throughout the summer.

Neither the amount of use nor the potential for use by birds on stock ponds in South Dakota is known. Preliminary data presented here are results of waterfowl observations on 13 …
