Informal Project Reports

In 1987, tree content and tree taper functions for individual live standing planted loblolly and slash pine trees in East Texas were published 1. These equations were developed based on stem analyses of felled trees located adjacent to East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project (ETPPRP) permanent plots throughout East Texas. The 1987 report was based on 65 loblolly and 34 slash pine trees sampled during 1986. For both species, dbh (0) values ranged from about 2-12 inches and total height (H) values varied from about 10-60 feet.

Research Report No. 27, Site Index Equations For Loblolly And Slash Pine Plantations In East Texas, Update: 1993, A. Beth Vaughn, Jaffirin Lapongan, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

In 1986, equations to estimate site index in loblolly and slash pine plantations in East Texas were published. These equations were developed using data collected from East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project (ETPPRP) permanent plots distributed throughout East Texas. The site index prediction equations were designed to estimate tree height 25 years from planting, ie., index age = 25 years.

In the 1986 study, only data recorded during the first measurement cycle of the ETPPRP (1982- 1984) were available for analysis. Pairs of observed plantation age and a'verage !otal height of the ten tallest trees values were accessible from 150 …

Managing Bushland On The Farm, Penny Hussey Jan 1993

Managing Bushland On The Farm, Penny Hussey

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Since the time of European settlement in Western Australia, the replacement of native vegetation with crops and pastures has led to problems for both agricultural production and nature conservation. The most obvious of these are hydrological changes leading to salinisation and waterlogging, and the extinction of some native plants and animals.

Protection of remaining remnants of native bushland, together with revegetation, is increasingly seen as important ways of achieving sustainable agriculture and maintaining our unique wildlife.

The Effects Of Wildfire On The Herbaceous Layer Of A Southwestern West Virginia Mixed Hardwood Forest, Michael K. Nowlin Jan 1993

The Effects Of Wildfire On The Herbaceous Layer Of A Southwestern West Virginia Mixed Hardwood Forest, Michael K. Nowlin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The effects of fire on the mixed hardwood forests in West Virginia have long been of interest both biologically and economically. This study examined the effects of a Fall, 1991 wildfire in Wayne County, West Virginia on soil fertility and herbaceous layer response.

Fire intensity was determined by comparison of 1) remaining organic material, 2) understory survival and 3) height of charcoal on the stems of trees following the fire. Study plots were established in areas representing fires of high, moderate and low intensities with a control established in an adjacent unburned area of similar aspect and elevation.

Composite soil …

A Prairie Dog Abatement Program In San Juan County, Utah, Terry A. Messmer, Jim Keyes, Roy Mcdonald

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Four species of prairie dogs are native to the plains and plateaus of the western United States. The most abundant and widely distributed of these is the blacktailed prairie dog, (Cynomys ludovicianus). This species has been a frequent topic of discussion at previous Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control workshops. Black-tailed prairie dog ecology and management was the topic of a panel discussion held at the Fifth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop, in Lincoln, Nebraska (Timm and Johnson 1982) and the theme topic at the Eighth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop in Rapid City, South Dakota (Uresk et al. …

Faculty Publications

Pine plantations on Typic Quartzipsamments in East Texas are difficult to establish. Forest management options following clearcutting are limited. A eight year regeneration study of the growth and survival of loblolly, Pinus tuedu, L. shortleaf, P. echinutu Mill., slash, P. elliofii Engelm and longleaf pines P. palustris Mill. was conducted to determine optimum tree species and treatments for reforestation; and to recommend practical alternative land uses and management strategies for Typic Quartzipsamrnents. With successful regeneration also comes insects and pathogens. Impacts of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacioniujkstrunu, (Comstock) the Deodar weevil, Pissodes nernorensis, Germar, Annosus root rot, Heterobusidion unnosusm …

Activity Patterns And Habitat Use Of Northern Bobwhite Females In 2 Grazing Systems, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Denise L. Sloan Jan 1993

Activity Patterns And Habitat Use Of Northern Bobwhite Females In 2 Grazing Systems, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Denise L. Sloan

Faculty Publications

During spring and summer of 1985 and 1986, we investigated activity patterns and habitat use of female northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) on 2 sites in south Texas. One site had been subjected to a short duration grazing (SDG) system and the other to a continuous grazing (CG) system. Nineteen females were radio-tagged in 1985 and 28 in 1986. Rainfall was above average in 1985 and below average in 1986; as a result, herbaceous ground cover was more dense in 1985 than in 1986. Due to extensive fencing, 58% of the SDG cell was within 25 m of a mowed roadside, …

Bulletin 4274 - Tree Planting On The High Rainfall Coastal Plain, Don Bennett, Richard George Jan 1993

Bulletin 4274 - Tree Planting On The High Rainfall Coastal Plain, Don Bennett, Richard George

Bulletins 4000 -

Careful planning can mean the difference between the success or failure of a tree planting program . Healthy , well-e stablished trees stand a better chance of survival, grow faster and are more resistant to insect attack. The need for time-consuming watering in summer is also eliminated.

The high rainfall coastal plain extends from Perth to Busselton and inland to the Darling Scarp. It receives about 800 to 1000 mm annual rainfall.

Site preparation is ideally started in summer. For a winter planting, decide before March where to plant, which varieties and how many trees to plant. Early planning allows …

Effects Of Fall Fertilizer Applications Of Mitotic Index And Bud Dormancy Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South Apr 1992

Effects Of Fall Fertilizer Applications Of Mitotic Index And Bud Dormancy Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Hans Michael Williams, David B. South

Faculty Publications

A series of studies examined the effects of fall fertilization with diammoniwn phosphate (DAP) on mitotic index and bud donnancy [as measured by mean days to budbreak (DBB)] of two half-sib seed sources of loblolly pine. The first study tested different rates of DAP (0, 67, and 202 kg Nlha), the second study compared DAP with ammoniwnnitrate, and the third study examined the effect of different application dates (September 28, October 19, and November 9). An increase in mitotic index of unfertilized seedlings was observed during October and was due to developmental activity which follows initial budset. Differences in mitotic …

Assessment Of Timber Resource Values In Arkansas, Richard A. Williams, Richard A. Kluender Jan 1992

Assessment Of Timber Resource Values In Arkansas, Richard A. Williams, Richard A. Kluender

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Arkansas forest lands have long been and will continue to be an important contributor to the state's economy. Today, Arkansas forests cover 52 percent of the land area (Hines and Vissage, 1988). These forests are classified by physiographic characteristics into four timber regions. The timber removed from forested lands provides direct and indirect employment for approximately 40,000 people within the Arkansas manufacturing sector (Kluender and Willett, 1989). This paper describes county and region level information, identifies standing timber volumes, net annual timber growth, net annual timber removals, and associated dollar values. Timber stand data are used to determine areas …

Hazard Perception And Preparation By Cross-Country Skiers In Utah, Kevin J. Kobe May 1991

Hazard Perception And Preparation By Cross-Country Skiers In Utah, Kevin J. Kobe

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis examined how cross-country skiers perceive and prepare for winter hazards. A self-completion questionnaire was administered to cross-country skiers in northern Utah. The questions on the questionnaire were designed to explore the relationships that affect how skiers perceive and prepare for winter hazards. Additionally, the situation where skiers put themselves at risk due to lack of information as opposed to skiers placing themselves at risk through the desire to confront nature's dangers was explored. Variables that were contained in these relationships were correlated and the degree of correlation was measured.

Those that sought information on the day surveyed were …

Landscape Plants, Forest Trees, And Crops Most Resistant To Mammal Damage: An Overview, Rex E. Marsh Apr 1991

Landscape Plants, Forest Trees, And Crops Most Resistant To Mammal Damage: An Overview, Rex E. Marsh

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

To capitalize on mammal-resistant plants, several approaches may be taken. The most common is to select crops not highly prone to mammal damage (i.e., resistant crops). If a generally susceptible crop is to be grown, the more resistant varieties or cultivars of that crop can be selected, if known. An approach that has not received the attention it warrants is the selection of parent stock with resistant characteristics and the selective breeding of useful species to develop strains, hybrids, or cultivars with improved mammal resistance. For several reasons, this latter approach shows the most promise for forest tree species. It …

Protecting Biological Diversity: A Major Challenge For Minnesota Forestry In The 1990s, David C. Zumeta Jan 1991

Protecting Biological Diversity: A Major Challenge For Minnesota Forestry In The 1990s, David C. Zumeta

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

One of the most significant challenges to Minnesota forestry in the 1990s will be responding to growing public concern about relationships between forestry in Minnesota and global and national environmental issues (e.g., protecting biological diversity, tropical deforestation). Influential citizens and public interest groups are asking penetrating questions about the effects of forest management and timber harvesting on biological diversity, and about parallels between tropical deforestation and timber harvesting in Minnesota.

This article examines some of the relationships between Minnesota forestry and biological diversity. It also describes what is being done, and what needs to be done, to protect biological diversity. …

Relative Performance Of Hardwood Sawing Machines, P. H. Steele, M. W. Wade, Steven H. Bullard, P. Araman

Faculty Publications

Only limited information has been available to hardwood sawmiller on the performance of their sawing machines. This study analyzes a large database of individual machine studies to provide detailed information on 6 machine types. These machine types were band headrig, circular headrig, band linebar resaw, vertical band splitter resaw, single arbor gang resaw and double arbor gang resaw. Kerf width and within-board, between-board and total sawing variation values are given with an analysis of their origin in individual machine characteristics. Feedworks and setworks type and sawblade thickness and type generally determined machine type performance.
